30 years ago the Grateful Dead arrived in Egypt and created one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s most monumental achievements by playing 3 unforgettable shows at the Sound & Light Theater near Cairo. To celebrate the enduring legacy of this musical milestone, we’re streaming video of the first song, "Bertha" from that final night, September 16th, 1978.
This excerpt is plucked from the DVD inside ROCKING THE CRADLE: EGYPT 1978. You'll find 100 minutes of footage on the DVD -- including 13 songs from the night of the 16th. Another DVD highlight is “The Vacation Tapes,” a featurette of never-before-seen candid band footage from the trip.
Donna.
She sucks. Contribution to the band ? Zip. I don't care if she was a somewhat accomplished session worker in Nashville or elsewhere, or that she couldn't hear the band on stage, blah, blah, blah. IMHO, she ruined the best sounding years of the boys.
Anyone that thinks she added anything to the band needs to take a time out and step back from the pipe. That is, unless you think that little sashshay during Bertha really helps Billy keep his one handed rythm in check.
the feed and sound and everything is beautiful....
I went to Egypt in 76. Its going to be a great flashback.
I love the Donna years. I think she's great. You guys can trash her all you want. It won't change my mind for a second. Garcia and Weir liked her. That's good enough for me.
I am digging Jerry's pigtails :)
That's why if you please, I am on my bendin' knees....
Bertha don't you come around here anymore
And Billy's playing with one arm!! check out minute ~ 3:30. His left arm is in a sling.
Yah, this changes a lot for me. Always heard and read that Egypt was pretty poor in terms of the band's playing, but gotta say this looks and sounds great - nice interplay, well mixed, groovy, loose yet still together. That's the Dead I like!
Always wanted to go to this concert and regret not going. Anyway I plan on buying and sharing this DVD with other folk's I know.
I still love the dead, God bless and thanks again.
Donna sounds great, I don't think the dead could have done better. Hey and i always loved Grace Slicks voice too.
