Thanks Rick for the help with the naming. Unfortunately, that is not going to work out in my case as I don't have an up to date XML folder. And on top of all that, it seems I've lost all my new music since October 2007 (the date of my last back up). So it looks like I'll be signing up for a few vines again. OUCH!

Unfortunately I have to revive this folder with a question which is the result of a disaster. One of my hard drives died last week. Luckily it was only the one with all of my applications, including my OS. I say luckily, because I didn't lose any data (165 GB of Dead among other things). I'm in the process of reloading my apps including iTunes. In fact I have iTunes set up and most of my music in it. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of my Dead tracks are in the wav format which seem not to carry any ID tags. This means that the title name is there but none of the pertinent info like date, artist etc. So I might have 15-20 Playin's with no date. UGH! I'm hoping that one of you smarties knows how to get around this issue because right now I'm looking at 1500+ tracks that need to be refiled!! Thanks for any help you can provide. operator

A few days ago I posted a comment "looking for Flac Player Software for IMac". And last night I got aware that I mixed things up. The cog.app plays flac, but no shn. So I went googling again. PureMusic audioplayer looked like what I am looking for. But it wasn't downloadable at any of the sites, who offered it. Obviously the Mcintosh Police took action .... any help appreciated, andré

I cut and pasted Hunter's original "Vining Instructions"
and I added a couple comments. There are quite a few new viners since this adventure first started so I wanted to put this out again for the Vineyard. The idea goes something like this: > 1) A person starts the vine with a show of their choosing.He/she posts the show with the details and starts a list. People starting a vine should clearly print the artist/show date/disc#/and any other pertinent info on the discs themselves. I like to also add a card with the vine with all the show info. > 2) Who ever wants to get on the vine can do so as long as they have a burner and the time to keep the vine running smoothly. > 3)To get on the vine a person only needs to add their email to the list. > 4) The vine will go to the first person on the list and after that person recieves the show they must contact the next email on the list to get mailing information.Once the show has been burned you pass the origional show CD's onto that next person...so on and so forth. *Important note* There is no reason to wait until you recieve the discs before contacting the next person on the list. Feel free to contact the next in line before you get the vine. This can help speed up the mailing process greatly. > 5) ***Very important....once you receive the show in the mail you must post back to the vine to update it.Let others on the vine know that you have received the show on so and so date and what date you will be sending the show onto the next in line. This will keep all the others in the loop and will let us know if the vine has died and who has killed it. Very important knowledge for upcoming vines because if a person repeatedly kills vines then that person should be skipped over if seen posting to other vines. Other than that , there is some info that is specific to our little operation. First you should go to the most recent post pertaining to the vine you're interested in. For our purposes here on this forum we will need to highlight the text from the original message that includes what show is being vined, and the list of people who have signed up, and copy it (right click on the highlighted text and hit copy). Then start a new post and paste (again, right click where you want the text to reappear, then click paste). The copied list will apear and you will then add your logon name to the list. Since we all have inboxes here on dead.net I think it would be simpler to communicate with each other through them rather than getting into personal emails. However this is not set in stone and people can feel free to contact each other however they wish. Just make sure your contact info is available to the whole group in case somone needs to contact you. So I guess that's it. Any questions feel free to send a private message or just post here on this forum. Also, anyone who has experience with running vines is welcome and encouraged to share their advice and expertise. This is a work in progress and I hope all goes well. AND I would like to add that when viners rip and burn from the discs or data disc that arrives you should ALWAYS SEND the original CD's or discs to the next person on the list. And YOU keep the copies you made. Those originally vined CD's are the 'travelling tunes' and if everyone sent the copies that they made, then this would make for a degraded CD being sent down the line. And that isn't sharing the music that was sent to you. Same with copying and changing the format (if that is the right word) eg. from wav to mp3. Always stick the original vined CD/data disk back into the mail to be 'vined on'. If you are going to convert it to something else or to you Ipod or Zune, fine, but please send along what was sent to you. The same with any artwork (see D00Dah's inserts on that Stanford '73, tremendous!) or additional information, setlists, cd inserts etc. MAKE A COPY AND THEN SEND THE ORIGINAL ON TO THE NEXT VINER. That way we all get the benefit of the generosity and creativity of the different individuals active on the vine. Again I offer this to keep the vine going, we have all had unforseen circumstances and snafu's (such as with the techologically-impaired, yours truely). But you know, everytime I ask for help with the vine, there is a hand here to assist me. That is one of the beautiful parts of this. And the biggest one is sharing this wonderful and dizzying array of transportive music. Thanks to viners old and new. Vine ON!!!!!!!!

so lets keep the Hampton '89 Reseed vine on page 1, and delete the old initial Hampton '89 vine on page 2. (the reseed has the current offerings/additional shows, and deleting the initial vine will stop people from signing up on a non-functional vine). I should have seen that when I was cut and pasting last night but it was difficult to keep track. This is definately a more 'user friendly' presentation and I can actually see very now all the vines that are available. Again, thanks for your efforts with this new set-up.

Thank you marye and yamadog. The PERRO sessions is what I was looking for. I do have the album you mention marye, it is an 80's continuation of Sunfighter, Blows Against The Empire and Ballad of the Chrome Nun from the 70's. I loved all that stuff. Had some awesome Jerry solos on Blows. Too bad Kantner and co. didn't follow this path instead of the more commercial Jefferson Starship one. They lost me after about the 3rd album. Oh well, they can probably retire comfortably. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. Wiliam Blake

I've listened to two of our vines in recent nights using iTunes. I'm pretty farmiliar with this program now and I'm pretty sure that on importing, I'm not adding gaps between songs. I even have the crossfade playback set to 2 seconds which should make the songs run together. Is there something I'm missing or did the vines come with gaps between songs?

I guess the first way to surpass this problem would be for every trader here to make sure they are burning the cds without gaps.I don't know about other players, but in iTunes the way to eliminate the gaps is shown below: Edit> Preferences> Advanced> Burning> *Gaps between songs=none We should all try to avoid this problem of gaps between songs. All things being equal, I would have to choose a tape with no gaps then a cd with gaps between tracks. Especially with a band like the Dead, I hate to hear a blank space in a segue between two songs.

I use WMP and I don't think there is a way to avoid gaps with it. Maybe I'll download I-Tunes and do what Operator suggests. BUT, if you rreceive a vine with cds with gaps, can't you eliminate them by the way Operator suggests. Or once a cd has gaps, it can't be eliminated?

dstache - I have WMP and the gaps too. I would like to send out some shows I have that were given to me and I have the discs with no gaps between and would like to copy these with no gaps between and send them out. Also would like the shows I listen to, either on CD or WMP not to have these gaps but I am so overjoyed at having the shows that gaps are not a major irritant for me. Just the next step to learn. I wish there was a basic guide to trading somewhere. There is a big learning curve for some of us and myself I would rather be out hiking somewhere than spending long periods of time trying to figure all this out. Thanks to all of you that have given me and other here pointers. Just this year I have learned how to rip and burn discs, how to download and am learning Trader's Helper and capturing streams. There is so much out there as far as music players etc. for your computer, it gets confusing. One of my friends who has 1000's of hours of tapes is overjoyed whenever I give him a show even if it is in mp3 (which I no longer do) or with the gaps. He just keeps pointing out to me how much better these are than our old tapes. So I am not going to whine about the formats I have now but will keep trying to improve the quality, but any guides for us Luddites would be appreciated. Well, for instance a few vines came to me recently and the cds they were on had gaps between the tracks. When I imported them into iTunes, the gaps remained. So I think if we could eliminate the gaps pre-burning, the problem would be solved for everyone down the vine.

I know that my Cream Filling vine definitely had gaps as I use WMP. Sorry about that. I'll download I-Tunes as you recommend for future vines. And for myself. I'd prefer no gaps for sure. Just wasn't that big of a deal to me. Operator, you are saying that once there are gaps on the cds, there is no way for the person who receives the cds to correct that, right? So, you can't make the Cream Filling shows have no gaps?

I know there are a few applications with which to eliminate the gaps. I'm just not familiar with those programs, but I'm sure there are others here who are. You could just check the help section of WMP and see if they address this issue. When you received the discs did they have gaps between songs?

some shows with the 'gaps' between tracks and I have to agree with operator that those can be annoying and I plead total ignorance on how to rectify it on my end. I use a Nero burner on my computer and am a true 'technogeezer'. I would really like to know how to 'join' those that have the gaps, but don't know how to do it. These are shows that came to me like this and if there is an effective way to do it, that would be nice. It isn't as big a deal with my Clapton, Neil, Marley, etc, because those guys rarely segue as the Dead do. So I am part of the difficulty and I will attempt to make full disclaimer on the shows that I am vining that are in that condition. But it is kinda like with the Veneta show and its 'faults', I would rather have that show that is many generations down the line than not having the show at all. But yes, operator, to have those segues smooth and the be able to grin with delight as the boys slide into another tune or 'jump the tracks' to the next song are infinitely preferable to me as well.

the 5-26-72 and listened back to NFA>GDTRFB>NFA and there was no pause in between those tunes. (KILLER sequence btw) Those segue seamlessly into one another without any 'gaps'. My Nero appears to copy the source in front of it, just as it is. So if the source has gaps, then the copy will and visa versa. (Of course it 'marks' the different tracks visually so you can select them, but not with an audible break). So, I am going ahead to try to finish these shows and send the vine out. (My sons are finishing their semester papers so computer time is not at a premium right now.) As far as the other May '72 shows (5/4 & 5/11), I will try to work to see if I can 'join' those gaps, but honestly I am over my head with this. I have a kinship with Hal and just learned about alot of how to do this recently. I need a vine 'doctor' to be able to 'mend' those separated jams for us. I will try to do it, but if I am unsuccessful, then I will simply send the shows onto dstache. Maybe he (or someone on down the vine) will figure it out. But thankfully the 5-26-72 is 'intact' (thanks again, Richard) and it is a truly stunning show and a wonderful finale to the Dead's adventure 'across the pond'. That show alone is worth vining.

Hi guys-Richard has just started a Summer '82 vine which has a matrix recording included. I kind of understand the concept of "matrix" but I'd like to hear what other people know about the whole thing. Basically, as far as I can tell, a "matrix" recording, although I believe that to be a misnomer, is a mix of a sbd and an audience recording. Any other details we should all know? When did Healy start using this method for mixing? Any comments? I'd love to know some more.

Healy did not do the matrix mixes. Those are done by various folks who have secured an SBD and a high quality AUD tape, then blended them together. Check the source and recording info in the text files to learn more about how this was done. The theory behind this is to try and re-create an authentic live-listening experience. IMHO, some folks do a better job of this than others. I don't think it comes off as well in stereo as it does in DTS 5.1 surround sound. I have some of those where the mix has the SBD on the front and center channels and the AUD on the rear channels. When this is done well, the result is awesome. Regarding the Iowa show, I would love to have the straight SBD tape, I just haven't found it yet. So I vined the best of what I have. Hope that helps. Peace, Richard

Hi,I'm wondering if anyone is interested in helping me digitize some tapes. I have maybe 1000 GD audio tapes (+ several hundred other live band recordings) that I would love to have in digital format. The vast majority of the GD tapes are Maxell XLS soundboards. While the shows span 30 years, what I think are the best years are well represented (68-77, 85, 90, 91). I live in Chicago and the tapes are in storage in Northern CA. If there is anyone seriously interested in helping me digitize some of them, I can create a database of what I have and send it to you and we can talk about working out some kind of trade or form of compensation.

Digitizing Tapes Of The Amount You Have Is A Project In It Self. But Fairly Easy If Your Set up For It.You Might Want To consider Sending A Couple Of 500gb External Hd's With Package. Then You Can Get Your Shows Back Loaded On Hard Drives In flac.Format.This Eliminates Ton's Of Dvd's Laying Around The house.Of course You Are Also Getting Into A Pretty Hefty USPS bill With The Weight Of your Parcells.Of course You Can Get The Hard drives,Get Set Up For Bit torrent And Get Awsome Charlie Miller Sbd's From B-etree And Download away. You'll Be Suprised How Quckley You Will fill Up The hd's And Grow Your collection.I Would Love To Help But time Is At A Premium For Me Right Now.But Mabey In The Future If You Don't Have Any Takers.Have A grateful Weekend...Brian.

I have the same thoughts as Yama. I to have 1000+ cassttes and started to run them through various programs designed to take analog and upload it to the computer for future CDs (see my posts from this past summer). However, it is a VERY time consuming project and I have found it much easier to go online and download shows some of which sound 10x better then my copies. Thus, you already have the digital file and dont have to mess with the cassettes. Good luck! Eric

Just stumbled into this topic. Because I use to have trouble with my iMac, I decided to read through all the posts. And as I already have had my share of trouble with mit iTunes dealing with gap's, (at least some of) the following might be helpful to (hopefully at least one of) you. I have used the path mentioned in a previous comment on "Gap's" to adjust "none" as the duration of silence between tracks. On my iMac I can use Garage Band to cut tracks into little pieces to juggle them around, delete and whatever. IMAGINE "three Dark full Star days" ... ) My Microsoft times PC doctor still runs his pc with Windows 98. And I have seen his WinOn software not only cut tracks into segments, etc. but also chose Nothing/none/0 as the length of silence between tracks. And that's for sure the same with newer Win On versions or other Windows sound software. The bad thing is that my iTunes had this siiod (Self Induced Ignoring Orders Desease) phase .... Although I had set it on "none", it started to make 2 seconds gaps on the copies. I checked and it said still "none". I copied an official CD with gaps, told my Mac to have "none" and it kept/made them. So I was glad, when, out of a sudden, with no changes, except usual uploads for my iMac software several times, It must have been the smell of all the Dead audio roses coming in, that made my iTunes decide to follow my instructions again. After I had added decoded flac files for the first time. So I am sure, the tools are amongst us, to shut the gaps up. PEACE andré

From what I understand, Healy was responsible for creating at least some of the matrix mixes that are in circulation. Here is what I was able to dig up online. If you're more interested, you can follow this link:http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-5988.html This is an excerpt from that link. Super technical, but informative. 04-13-05, 11:46 AM :nono: OK, here we go again. What are commonly (inaccurately) referred to as "Matrix" recordings are in fact "Blends" of independently recorded SBD and AUD sources of an event. In the audio world, a matrix recording is in fact: Mid-side Matrix One cardioid mic (M) points at subject (0°), and a figure-8 mic (S) picks up ambient sound by pointing at sides(90° and 270°). The signals are then run through a decoder matrix (software or hardware) which creates two stereo channels: n M+S = channel one n M - S = channel two One channel is a mix of M and S and the other be a mix of M and Sø (which means S is 180° out of phase) n The more S, the stronger the separation. MS Matrix recording is mostly used in acoustic concert settings to capture the true image of the hall. One technique that Dan Healy perfected when mixing and recording the Grateful Dead, was to place a MS Matrixed microphone array at the mix position, and record it on a source that was locked to the same source as the SBD recording (assuring that the recordings were sped accurate to each other) What Dan called an "Ultra Matrix" was (as I understand it) actually a BLEND of a Matrix recording and a SBD recording. There are also time coincidence issues that are addressed when combining these sources. Many "Matrix" recordings in circulation are simply blends of 2 different recordings and present a significant challenge in Post Production in terms of correctly time and pitch aligning the sources. The results of these efforts often sound really good, but are difficult to produce. The cow has left the barn in terms of correcting the proper use of the term "Matrix", but in fact, it's nice to know the proper terms to apply to these very different methods.
