With the plethora of video from shows that has to be out there, why can't another DVD be released? I don't care what era or venue, I'll take anything!!! I'd like to do it before my kids get out of high school.

I was thinking that myself.
I'd also like to see a re-release of the Mother Mcree's - that was fun. I lent my copy to afriend and never got it back!

Downloadable Dead including Download Series
Just about the entire GD catalogue including the Download Series and Rare Cuts and Oddities can be purchased online in FLAC or MP3 from:
http://www.livedownloads.com/live-music/3,461/Grateful-Dead-mp3-flac-do…
why their catalogue is so much more complete than that from the store here beats me!
Shakedown Street
Hi, I am new to this forum.
I have a quick question for you folks. I am looking for a good youtube clip of the song Shakedown Street. I have listened through a few that come up & was hoping to hear a few of the fans faves too. Thanks in advance!

Also, there is a Grateful Dead Streaming Video website that offers many video clips to view.

CD Inventory - Holiday season
I sent the following email to customer service, but thought I might get a more satisfactory answer here:
"I can't help but notice that a number of CDs are disappearing from the store on Dead.net, especially some of the Dick's Picks series. With the holidays fast approaching does GDP plan to get more of these in stock? The problem is that many of these albums are still in high demand and their lack of availability at a fair price at dead.net creates an alternate economy that often results in price gouging - an aspect of capitalism that the Dead never supported (I think that's fair to say). Why not let the band/company get some of that money and keep their customers/fans happy at the same time? It's a win-win, no?"
This is especially true of the higher numbered DPs - with the extreme examples being Vols. 25, 28, 32, and 34. The re-sale prices for these are astronomical. I'll gladly give my money to GDP at the listed price. (And I realize that these are available in FLAC, but I prefer having the physical CD. I can make my own FLAC and mp3s, plus if something happens to them I can always just re-rip.)
Thanks!

Pure Jerry
I noticed that some of the Pure Jerry releases have also disappeared from the store. In particular - Pure Jerry: Merriweather Post Pavilion - September 1 & 2, 1989. Is it already out of print or just temporarily out of stock?
Filing
Just out of curiosity how does everyone else file these releases? Never sure what's best do I go, official, Dicks Picks, Vault, Road Trips, or do I file according to date of gig or release date, or do I just need to chill and enjoy!!
Think I'll go and lie in a dark room.
Filing
I ponder how to file and have changed the shelves over the years, but here's how they now stack:
The studio CDs are together, then Dick's Picks in chronological order. The Road Trips are together in order of release date as I tend to listen to most recent first .... then a big shelf has all the main releases chronologically.
My logic is this. The size and style of the releases all differ, and being a former storeman I like things to look 'ordered' - and there's something magic about seeing a row of DPs and Road Trips all happily living side by side.
This does mean that particular eras are not together, but I tend to play more decent purchases and so Road Trips are now in their own section.
my GD CDs
are all in one box (another box of Jerry and related dead CDs)I have the Picks sorted by volume - I maybe missing one or two - plus the fact that 2 or 3 are only in digital on my computer
as for all the live dead albums/shows I have on my computer I basically have folders based on the year recorded. this is a work in progress with my recent additions from the archives and vines.
Filing
Sorry dstache, I should perhaps have asked how other people "store" their C.D's. i.e on their shelves or C.D. racks. I have tried various options but as SimonT states sometimes the problem is the different sizes of the boxes which often makes things look untidy. I suppose I was just thinking out koud but nice to hear other viewpoints.
The best filing system
is whatever happens to work for you. It's your "file," right? So it only has to work for you. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to find that someone who requires a little adventure in their music might completely eschew the notion of any "system" at all. Nothing like blindly sticking your hand into the pile and seeing what fate has in store for you right now.

storage
Oh, if you are talking about storage, I switch over to sleeves a while back. If you are a serious collector, you listen on CD, and you don't have a lot of space, you have to switch from jewel cases to sleeves. I have my entire collection (over a 1000 shows if you count JGB and related configurations) in a library card catalogue-style cabinet. The link will take you to what I have:
http://www.spinkeeper.com/chfilide.html
I don't know if that is where I got it from. It says it holds about 450 CDs, but if you use sleeves rather than the jewel cases, it must hold at least 2000 CDs, if not more. It is getting pretty full though :)
Don't forget ...
'stache, your trick of inserting a piece of paper inside the sleeve so you can put two in one sleeve. Brilliant!
" Where does the time go? "
CD collection
got one wall unit that holds close to 900 - Stones/Zeppelin/Hendrix/Dylan fill up the top two shelves(clapton bands and the who fill up the 3rd row)
as mentioned below - the dead collection exploded so I cant keep them anywhere but in a box haha (a nice box tho - CDs fit 3 wide)
- a couple other racks that hold ~200 - one filled nearly by just female artist....
no way I give up my jewel cases tho - I even try to hang onto the stickers that they put on the cellophane - remember the long (cardboard) box CDs used to come in? - I got an old Jack Daniels case full of them. Not the common box but the ones with nice artwork.
If you think I'm a pack-rat - guilty.
My GD stuff is all over the place
Yet it is organized enough for me to be able to find what I need fairly easily. The shows are listed in Excel. My main "library" consists of several hard drives filled with shn/flac. When I want to listen to something I can either move the files to iTunes for iPod listening or I'll convert to wav and burn CD's. I gave up trying to store the CD's all nicely in jewel cases since frankly I ran out of room!! Now when I purchase a reel of CD's and/or DVD's I keep the empty reel (they empty quickly =) and store burned CD's in those. You can hold over 100 CD's per reel. So far, a couple of reels per decade has been working out. If I convert a shn of flac to wav or mp3 I note that in my Excel spreadsheet so I do not do any repeat burnings. It works for me!!

My Vault
I've been using these little guys for the time being...
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Goodies+-+Foldable+CD+Storage+Box+-+Black/9…
they work well, but I may need another storage idea as I will probably be buying tons and tons of these boxes for my shows. I use the slim jewel cases and I'll type up the setlist, venue, date and source info on those CD templates in Microsoft word and Open-Office that you can print out. The only problem is it can be costly with printer ink, not to mention it can take a while sitting in front of the computer typing them out. I may change to paper sleeves and just writing the info on the back by hand....all in all though me and my buddies came up with a saying: "It's for the Vault!"
From the previous posts, I too have wondered if dead.net will be restocking any of the Dick Picks because prices on amazon and elsewhere are pretty crazy. I've been wanting to get Dicks Picks 19 and they have the lowest price close to $50 on Amazon. A Dicks Picks CD package would be terrific!!!
Storage-
I have 2 400 CD carousel players from Sony (Also a 400 DVD carousel)
They are cheap when you compare the price and compactness to and speed of access to other storage options. However, I have moved most of my music to my computer, and am deciding on how to arrange it there. Right now it is but Album name but I am putting in the comments the data field in 19700404 format (Family dog) to be able to do a chronological sort.
Road trips, Download series
Can anybody tell me if the road trips are going to overlap the 12 (+1) digital down load series? I haven't had time to do a complete comparison, and will not fill holes with lower Bit rate versions available if they are coming out again here.
Thanks in advance
60CD Europe 72 box set

Help with Dead 2003 Tour
I was listening to a friends Tour set from Munckmusic, and noticed that he had two copies od Disc 1 from 6/29/03 Vernon, NY and is missing Disc 1 St. Louis 7/2/03.
After Rhino took over publishing rights, Munck stopped selling the discs. Any help in locating this Disc ( Even electronically) would be appreciated.
I believe somewhere out there is a person with the Limited edition Box set missing Vernon NY with 2 St Louis Disc 1s.
Help on the way (possibly) with Dead 2003 Tour
I am one of the lucky ones with this set, but i must confess that I still haven't listened to the whole thing yet. I will check my set and see if I have/have not got the discs that you mention. With 86 CDs in the "Summer Getaway 2003 Tour" set and a further 105 CDs in the "Wave That Flag 2004 Tour" set, it will keep my ears busy for awhile yet. I will post here again when I have checked it out.
Well that didn't take too long
I have checked and my set contains the correct discs.
Dick's Picks
Hi all,
I just noticed that the store has a few Dick's Picks that were previously out of print including #27, 28 and 4. Not sure if this was ever announced, but I notice these are always in demand on ebay (I've been looking for 4 and 28 for a while).
Wish they'd do 25 and 19 again...maybe someday....
2 cold rain & snow on a dick's picks?
Can anyone tell me where I can get the song listings for Dick’s Picks series? There is one I would like to get from this store but I can’t remember which volume. I believe it had 2 Cold Rain and Snow’s on it. I would like to get it before it too disappears from the store.
cold rain and snow
try deaddisc.com
I know there are two versions (one instrumental) on 'Birth of the Dead' but apart from that???
thank you for the info
Thanks for the link. All the track listings were there for Dicks Picks. I must have been thinking of something else because you guys were right, no release with 2 Cold Rain & Snow's. At least the Europe '72 has a couple. Thanks again for the link.
Itchin' for Feb. 73 box
Listening to Madison from February 15, 1973 makes me dream of a multi-show run from 2/73.Dane County Coliseum hosted a few great performances: 10/25/73 and 2/3/78, to mention 2.
Dicks Picks Box set?
Hey folks,
Not sure if this has ever come up, but would anyone else beside me like to see a re-release of all the Dicks Picks into a big ol' box set? I only have Vol. 1 at the moment and I think it would be great for anyone who doesn't have much of the collection or really for anyone that simply want's it. Of course I'm grateful we have the Europe '72 tour set coming soon, but maybe some where down the road.....
DP box
Before the site switched over to the Rhino version, you could order the DPs in blocks of 6 (1-6, 7-12, etc) at a discount. They even offered the whole set...I think it was $600. Maybe if you call...? Probably not. :/ It would be nice to see discounts if you met certain price points since practically everything is sold at "MSRP."
DP question
I've noticed more DP's are missing from the store and I would like to order a DP from 76 before it is not in stock. What would be recommended, DP 20 or DP 33?
DP 33 in Oakland
I really like the strong performances from the 2 day October '76 run in Oakland. The Who were also on the bill, as part of Bill Graham's Day on the Green concert series.
Allman
I agree with GTed about the Oct. shows - and they were more or less at home. But you need them both - the cover art is a trip on DP 20 and the Sugar Magnolia to end the 2nd of the four discs is positively ecstatic! Before DP 20 was released the Sugar mags was cut - now and forever we can hear it in all its glory. Do it!!!
" Steal Your Jazz "
edits?
Anyone know where the edits are on the official releases and which have edits? For example, stuff that's removed entirely or where AUD sources have been patched in. I know there's a patch on several releases like the Summer '71 Road Trip (Dark Star I think) and the Valentine's '68 Road Trip (Alligator?). Is there one on Dick's Picks 1? I thought that pick was heavily edited. I wish they'd be more forthright about these things. Inquiring minds want to know. Maybe they think the sales volume would go down if this type of detail were known.
thanks for the advise - Gr8fulTed and Deadicated
I think I will break down and order both. With DP selections missing, I could regret not getting both. How is the sound on these two DP's?
I wonder why all the DP's are not kept fully stocked or if some are gone for good? That would be a true shame.
DP 20 & 30 sound
If I may speak for GTed, the sound on each is awesome - the coolest thing is that they are different venues entirely and each has its own sound world. It's a matter of taste which you prefer.
" Steal Your Jazz "
Out of stocks.
I recieved a email today from Dr. Rhino:
Me:
Does Rhino plan on re producing any of the Dicks Picks that are currently out of stock?
Dr. Rhino:
Dear Nathan,
Thank you for your email. We do not have current plans to reissue the following volumes:
19
24-26
28
32-34
I do not have any information as to when/if any of the other out-of-stock volumes will be reissued.
I will forward your message to our suggestion box.
Seems to me that the current trend is once it's out of stock then it's gone for good. I'll just settle for the downloadable Dicks Picks in FLAC.
can't believe the DP's will not be restocked
I was just getting ready to order 20 and 33. 33 is now gone and per Long Dead's message will not be available again (CD).
Really sucks! Why would you let a legacy like this disappear?
I don't want to get jaded but this really is depressing.
I better hurry and order some DP's before they are gone.
He who hesitates is lost
Just ordered DP 20 before it is gone. I can see a rush of orders after Lond Dead's update. Thank you Long Dead for alerting everyone.
That's too bad...
It's unfortunate that so many of these titles are going by the wayside. I understand that keeping the entire Dead catalog in print isn't an inexpensive proposition, but if in fact they did not or do not now have the intentention of keeping titles in print , then it would be nice for the powers at be to at least clarify their policy somewhere on this site, preferably in some sort of disclaimer. As a long time jazz collector I queried Michael Cuscana and Tom Everett from The Blue Note division of EMI and they were not secretive when when they told me that a title has to sell at least 500 copies a year for them to be able to keep said title in print. I also know first hand that when enough of us rallied for an unreleased session to be be put out, many times they would re-examine the session with fresh ears and a few times even put the session out.
Again I'm not knocking the fact that it costs money to warehouse all these titles but as a loyal consumer I'd like to have the information to make informed choices. I've already missed out on a few Dick's Picks from the last batch when they were released because I ordered them, they got backordered and eventually canceled after I think thirty days. By the time I even thought to reorder them they weren't listed. Sure, I could have been more diligent as a consumer, but I didn't always have time to keep checking back, especially pre-smartphone era. Knowing the intention of the company would go far in ensuring that the Dead's loyal fan base can avoid a painful flogging from the eBay and now amazon profiteers.
Anyway that e-mail from Dr. Rhino is still worded vague ...
But yeah, right now it seem like the Flacs are still available. Get your DP 20, it is quite good.
thanks Gretsch
My opinion is that DP's are a legacy and should be made available - cd version. But of course that is easy for me to say.
