April 20 - April 26, 2009

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’ll be playing three excellent jams from April, 1969, and one big jam from April, 1978.

Our first stop this week is in Worcester, MA, on 4/20/69, and in honour of the 40th anniversary of that concert, we have the show’s big jam sequence, consisting of Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Death Don’t Have No Mercy. No Lovelight to round out the jam, but it’s a great Death Don’t, making it a perfect ending to the trifecta that started the sequence.

Next up, from just two days later in Boston on 4/22/69 we have another exquisite 1969 sequence, featuring Doin’ That Rag>That’s It For The Other One>Death Don’t Have No Mercy. We hope you don’t mind the two versions of Death Don’t this week.

To end our little trip back to the April, 1969 tour, we have music from 4/25/69 in Chicago, featuring Hard To Handle, Doin’ That Rag, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, Morning Dew. Apologies for the two versions of Doin’ That Rag this week, but we don’t get a chance to play it too much here. This tour also featured the 4/26&27/69 shows that make up Dick’s Picks Vol. 26.

Lastly this week we are going to check in with some music on 4/21/78 in Lexington, KY, where we’ll hear the post-Drums sequence of Jam>Stella Blue>Truckin’>Playing In The Band, Werewolves of London. This version of Stella Blue is the one included on the outstanding five-CD boxed set “So Many Roads,” and we figured you should also hear what came after this excellent version of Stella Blue.

Be sure to stop by next week for music from 1971 and 1977. And as always, feel free to email the address below with questions or comments about the Tapers’ Section.

David, thanks for the "older" stuff this week! The boys are playing a lot of this stuff now, so it's great to hear what it sounded like forty years ago and forty minutes ago.

Hey jjjbaggins, today is my son's sixth birthday as well! weird, huh? Easter babies are always cool, even cooler with a 4/20 birthday.

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land

Happy 420 everyone!!

Thanks for the great music David!

Jerry always sang Death don't so amazingly well. he made the song real.

Is that my glass? Can you see it? Understand me?

Happy 4/21!

So what's a day off, really? Thank you for these tasty gems from 4/69, David. I'm trying to wrap my head around that opening Dark Star right now. I can't wait to listen to the selection from Lexington. I've always adored that Stella Blue ever since I first heard it on the box set. It really rages at the end, and knowing from the setlist that it slams into Truckin made me badly want to hear that full jam. So once again...thank you and happy Spring everybody.

No PITB or WOL

Argh...the 4/24/78 feed cuts off after Truckin'. I've only heard one version of Werewolves (Red Rocks '78) and was looking forward to another one. Nothing against PITB but I can probably survive if I miss this one as it was their most played song ever, I do believe. Werewolves Of London would be a real treat....bring it on!

nasty cut

Yeah, I got the same cut-out during Truckin'. Does someone actually listen to these tracks before putting them up in the Taper's Section? It would be nice to hear what it actually says we're gonna hear! I'm happy w/ whatever gets put up, but I too was disappointed to not get to hear the Werewolves :^(

Post-Drums Jam

Oh my - that jam out of Drums in 4-21-78 is unbelievable. Santana-esque. Is it just Bobby, Jerry and the drummers? I've clearly been neglecting early '78 at great peril to my soul. I will fix that.

Thanks David.
