This week we have four big jams for you, three of which are from 1973, and one from 1969.
Our first stop is at the Dream Bowl in Vallejo, CA, a dance hall located in this North Bay city. From this concert, which took place just a few days before the famous Fillmore West 1969 run of shows, we have Doin' That Rag>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight. Not quite the Live/Dead suite, but pretty close. And so well played!
Jumping ahead four years, we have both halves of the big jam from 2/19/73 in Chicago. The first portion features He's Gone>Truckin'>The Other One, with plenty of fine jamming throughout, and the show would end with the equally interesting sequence of Eyes of the World>China Doll, Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones. This tour was loaded with great music, and this is certainly no exception.
Our last big jam of the week is from the very next show, on 2/21/73 in Champagne-Urbana, IL, and features the perfect combination of Truckin'>Eyes of the World. I really can't get enough 1973 Grateful Dead music.

How about a boxset w Chicago & 2 Champaign's? Imagine hearing 3 jazzy Eyes of the Worlds: The first coming out of the Other One in Chicago, then one after Truckin' on 2/21, and the other after Dark Star on 2/22. Pinch me!! I sure had a wild time in Champaign on the 22nd...

These clips are great . I sure wish id had these recordings in 1994 , 19 years of age ; in the middle of a hot Dead summer tour
The Chicago 73 stuff is great . I think when this band played with MIles davis in early 1970 - i may be the only one on earth to think this - it may have motivated them to make their sound more dynamic , more abstract ( ? ) . I say that because Davis - r.i.p. great jazz trumpeteer - was a Sharp ass musician , who played with the best
I read in Gans' Playin in the band back in 95 or 96 that Phil L after the Miles D sets in 1970 , just wanted to head home and ' digest ' what hed just seen .
I really think those gigs made some kind of impression on our beloved band ( Im a Huge fan of the first two quintets of M Davis , especially the 2nd with Wayne shorter on Sax ] .
Anyhow , the sound the Dead began to construct in 1970 , then 71 with Mickey , and then w out is really dynamic . Somewhat more different than 1969 - to give an example . Or the great , GREAT 1968 jams . I think the bands evolution would make one heck of a book - I dont think ones been written along these premises i just mentioned ; maybe there is , but the bands sound / it s evolution definitely gets , or goes into stratospheric dimensions - in my and many others' humble opinion in 9170 and the following also years
1972 is perfection - as I say , and as DL says , although he says 1973 is perfection .
Then .. uh .. 1973 & and 74 are some of the best musical nuggets ever recorded at least on our planet , right ? At least it can be amply said that the early 70 s for this band is ground for much analyisis , thought & enjoyment
