August 1- August 7, 2011
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, and a big Happy Birthday to Jerry, who would have been 69 years old today. This week we'll span a dozen years in Grateful Dead history, 1972-1984.
First stop today is at Winterland on 1/2/72, where we have a good batch of tunes including Big Railroad Blues , Mexicali Blues ,Playing In The Band, Next Time You See Me. This was just before Playing In The Band would begin to develop into the powerhouse jamming vehicle it would become by the Europe tour a few months later, starting out on that tour as a 9-10 minute piece, and ending on the final night as an 18 minute song.
From a decade later on 4/11/82 at Nassau Coliseum on the very good Spring Tour of 1982, we have the show-opening sequence of Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Franklin's Tower > El Paso ; Candyman > Little Red Rooster. The Rooster has some nice Brent scat singing, which he did infrequently throughout the years. Later, he'd occasionally also take a verse of Rooster.
Lastly this week, from Kansas City on 7/3/84, we have the show opening sequence of Alabama Getaway>Promised Land, Candyman, Cassidy. The mix during Alabama is a little wonky, but it settles down before the song is done.
Be sure to stop by next week for more Grateful Dead music from deep within the vault. And as always, we encourage you to write to us at the address below. Please include “Grateful Dead” in the subject line, to make sure it breaks through our state-of-the-art spam filters.
this makes me feel a lot more sane ;)
perhaps i'll just bookmark the home or features page for future reference.
again, much appreciated you two!!
from The Latest links on the right rail on the homepage.
However, I've reported the issue with the Tapers Section page.
It appears that the link can be accessed from the "Features" page, but not from the "Tapers Section" page.

Utterly confused... your hyperlink is the only way to reach this week!!
i sure hope this doesn't become an ongoing problem for me.. i do wonder if anyone else is experiencing this, it seems to make zero sense.
Thanks for the lead this week, let's hope i don't need the assistance next week too :-/
do you see it there? i still do not...
i do, however, see Aug 8th-14th appear by clicking your hyperlink, but even from that page if I hit 'Tapers Section' in left tab area, the list of weeks is still spread out and does not show this week... i'm VERY confused. how is it others have obviously reached this week if it's not showing in the list at http://www.dead.net/features/tapers-section
i notice this week's address has "[catpath]" in the address bar; http://www.dead.net/features/[catpath]/august-8-august-14-2011
maybe i need to add that to http://www.dead.net/features/tapers-section to get a proper list as well? gonna try that out... never had this problem before :(
because it seems to be working fine right here
but i greatly request some info or any indicator that things are still running on Taper's Section.. haven't observed a week go missing before... of all the weeks I'd think there be something here in memoriam.
still waitin, keepin it cool though
just wondering if anyone has reported the absence of a new entry this week... i noticed the listing is significantly more spaced out, perhaps there was an upload error related to how the index appears?
-i'll keep checking in.
Have to agree wholeheartedly with Shwack, that whole show was 5 stars and the Cassidy absolutely had that magical feeling. Wish I was at that show, taking the ferry from RI.
Wow, it is so hard to believe that he would have been 69 year old. It sure doesn't seem like it. Thank you once again for this amazing mix and I look forward to more as always.
