December 3 - December 9
Like last week, we’re going to check into the fall tour of 1979, as there happened to be more great grateful dead shows played during this week in the band’s history in 1979, but we’ll also check out some great material from 1971.
We left off last week on 12/1/79 in pittsburgh, so this week we’ll pick right back up with the next show of that mighty little tour of the midwest. from 12/3/79, the first of three shows at the uptown theatre in chicago, we have the post-drums sequence of Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance>Wharf Rat>Truckin’ This set closing Truckin’ was quite rare at this time, as Truckin’ had found a home by this time largely as the song that would go into Drums or that would come out of Space.
With so much great music on this 1979 tour, we figured we should bring as much as possible to you, so from the next night in Chicago, 12/4/79, we have the first set closing trio of songs, featuring Stagger Lee, Passenger>Deal. Everything we’ve been playing for you this week and last from the Fall Tour of 1979 is drawn from cassette master tapes, using the PA mix, and they sound remarkably good. Not 15-ips-reels-good, but very, very listenable, and the mixes are often excellent.
Lastly on our little trip to the Fall Tour of 1979 this week, we’ll stop into the final show in Chicago on 12/5/79, with a few mid-first set tunes. From this mighty fine show, we have Me and My Uncle>Big River, Cold Rain and Snow, with the latter having a rare mid-set placement.
Also this week, because we haven’t played too much Europe 72 material lately, and even less Pigpen, it seems, we have this terrific Good Lovin’ from 4/29/72 in Hamburg. With the two previous West German shows already seeing official release in the form of Rockin’ The Rhein (4/24/72) Hundred Year Hall (4/26/72), let’s hope this one is the next of the fine crop of Europe shows to be tapped for official release.
Check back in next week for more great music. As always, we welcome you to email me at the address below with questions, comments or suggestions.
