Grateful Dead

December 6 - December 12, 2010

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have the rare opportunity to play you music from all four of the decades the Grateful Dead were active, the 1960s, 70s, 80 and 90s.

Our first stop this week is just a little north of Marin County, when the Dead were playing Napa on 2/22/69. From that show, just a few days before the very famous Fillmore West run of 2/27 to 3/2/69, we have Doin' That Rag>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight, a classic sequence for the era with the exception of the opening song, here with Doin' That Rag replacing the usual Dark Star in that slot

Next from five years later at Winterland on 2/24/74, the third of three nights at their home court through the 1970s, we have China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, El Paso, Loser, Playing In The Band, Cumberland Blues, It Must Have Been The Roses, Big River, Bertha. Cumberland opens the second set, following the first set closing Playing.

From the excellent March, 1981 tour, we have the end of the first set on 3/14/81 in Hartford, CT, featuring Passenger, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. This was drawn from the cassette master, to which most shows from 1980-1982 were recorded. One of the few exceptions is the December, 1981 tour, which was also recorded to reel-to-reel tapes, although they are PA board tapes and not separate mixes as was the norm 1976-1978.

Lastly this week we have the bulk of the first set from 2/25/90 in Oakland, made up of Little Red Rooster ; Stagger Lee ; Queen Jane Approximately ; The Last Time ; Cassidy ; Deal. These shows, like the summer and fall tours of 1989 and spring tour of 1990, were recorded to 24-track analog tape, so a proper live album could be mixed from these shows at some point down the road.

Thanks for listening, and we'll see you here next week we hope.

Loud ringing tones

What's with the loud ringing tones after "Deal" on 2/25/90?

on third thought...

I wonder if I'd prefer a Winterland Dec. '72 or Winterland Mar. '77 box over the Feb. '74 run...

Inspired by that great Doin' That Rag, Others, and Today

December 6, 2010.

There’s something>> in My Eyes today---the morning news!
IT said NO jobs for 4 or 5 years- sentences are being handed out when no crime has been committed or ~Sentenced.
Victims, no crime but some other’s....
But it SHould be dismissed because it’s a very big business, and we must value others devastating contributions.
10% is a lot if you are looking at the whole, can a Mother feed only 90% of her children and not be turned in. (What's Your Name?)
Our signatures are as empty as pen in from which they are written. I
ntertwined value system like Vampires and Demons on the Big Screen, penetrated by sight of it. The sight of the wrong blood, then glorified and retold in reviews recklessly called intpretations or commonly named, the News. Reviews of the blood shed without the meaning of blood, the most important component of the anatomy. Left to the Jury of Men to bring our next Labor Pain intro to a dripping stained crime doing business as usual. The seeds of a careless man are obivous to me, his profits and donations might burn off both yer ears...fear not. The letters I've written you all are so so beautiful, I only wish I shared them...someone would probally have to steal them as they are so valuable....they are blood stained, with My Blood. But I've participated in the process and AM trying to feel proud. I love you all.
Oops! I hope I haven’t over stepped this topic, I am not sure if you’ll need to MOVE this.
NOW...I will share my appreciation for this special place I value as priceless for how it keeps me so very well, well, well…just happens to BE what is going on Today-----December 6, 2010.
Ok um… I was also looking forward to what seed will be sown before My Eyes this Christmas? We do have a seed and all that>>>On another note. Thank God, I know I can count on you (DL) to…bless me. For the fourth week of December… may I make a request? (I don’t write Christmas List’s but…) I’d love a Victim or The Crime, a TLEO, and a When Push Comes To Shove.
It’s not a list---just a bunch of songs, lmfao.
I never know what a day will bring but on some things you can depend---to us ---of course. Some have decided~ I don’t care how you look at it; I’m the one writing (typing) this.
The court decides when a child shall clutch its Mother’s Breast. The Education system decides what values a child takes. The values the Education systems gives the children comes from the Governing System which they are born into, Today.
Ultimately, the fork in the road is a double-edged sword and few realize there is a path through the grass:::::::::::::::::::…even fewer realize you can actually walk through it to get there too. But we know the way, and it is by design…Bravo!
(Stephen would answer if he only knew how)
Lowering it down again>>>Then a man slept in a other bed, with a other lady using other money, then a 25 year other contributor decides the pack should bring in a ten spot---taking over half. (One man gathers what another man spills.)
Just a commercial of his fate delivered to him during the baseball game for him and his kids to enjoy together.
While The Weight rocks on radio and there’s no one offering to take the load off Fannie.
And penetration takes on several new meanings all in the name of business and opinion.
A new parking lot for the door greeter and not one sticker to show you voted Today, December 6, 2010.
Drum roll please.... pa rum pa pa pum-----(----@
Thanks for the might and glory of a forty year old drink in a single glass.
Have an excellent week!
Who said, “Stay Thirsty My Friends”? And what was he drinking?
It’s Winter Here and Some People Don’t Have a Woodcutter or a Wood Stove to Load, just a load and some others load too.
And do ya know what they told me…where they (the kids) are putting it today, I’d never want it there.
But they have been schooled in a different way, and we must embrace it in the name of twenty first century because it’s big business.
And they all need jobs and healthcare and maybe an anatomy lesson or two.
Not all rats are white, some are black, and some are brown but an albino has PINK EYES and different cells.
Well, I hope you connected with me on a thing or two but none of means anything, unless you want it to.

on further review...

...maybe that reel flip right before I Know You Rider has something to do with it.
In such case, I'd be fine with an AUD splice a la the Yale Bowl Road Trip.

Here's to hoping...

...the February '74 Winterland run gets 'box set treatment'. And soon...These shows are every bit as good as the 1973 or 1977 release in my opinion...Thanks as always for the generous helping of musical nuggets DL!!

Great picks all around. I never tire of the '89-'90 era.
