February 01 - February 07, 2016
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1978, 1983 and 1990.
Our first selection this week is from 9/2/78, the Dead's first-ever show at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, where we have Estimated Prophet>Eyes Of The World. A couple of days later the Dead left for Egypt and their triumphant shows beneath the pyramids.
From five years later on 9/4/83 in Park City, UT, we have the start of the second set, featuring Scarlet Begonias> Fire On The Mountain ; Man Smart (Woman Smarter).
Lastly this week, we have the entire first set from Vince Welnick's first show as a member of the Grateful Dead on 9/7/90 in Richfield, OH. He mostly played it laid back, but you do hear quite a few moments where he steps out a bit, and the crowd reacts with warm welcomes: Cold Rain & Snow > Walkin' Blues ; Ramble On Rose ; Me And My Uncle > Big River ; Althea ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; Bird Song ; Picasso Moon ; U.S. Blues.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
Seems as the Eyes of the Worlds from 77-78 during their labor day gigs always brought the goods...two of my favorites
Vince sure had some enormous shoes to fill. Brent had set the bar very high, especially in the mid-to-late '80s. It took a while for Vince's confidence level to peak, but he gave it a nice effort. Bruce's presence brought that spontaneity back that was effortless for Brent an Keith during his pre-retirement peak.
9/2/78 is good
9/7/90 is a nice novelty
September shows, all three
Try to remember the kind of September when life was slow and oh, so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September when grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September when you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember and if you remember then follow
