Greetings, and welcome back to the Tapers Section. This week we have a good selection of Grateful Dead music from this week in the Grateful Dead's recorded history, as well as some music from Jerry Garcia concerts that took place during this week many years ago.
Our first selection is Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain from 9/5/79 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This was the Grateful Dead's second visit to the Garden after their two night run there in January, 1979, and it would always hold a place of high honour in the Grateful Dead's touring schedule.
From a year later, on 9/4/80 in Providence, RI, we have the very cool second set jam featuring Supplication Jam>Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World. These Supplication Jams are always so much fun to hear. From the same tour, two nights later, we have some music from an audience tape on 9/6/80 at the famous show in Lewiston, Maine, featuring Shakedown Street>Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance>Althea. It's too bad that a soundboard tape of this concert has never surfaced in the vault, although we're very thankful the tapers were doing their job so well.
On to some Garcia material. From 9/1/74 at the Keystone in Berkeley, we have a couple of tracks from the incredible Pure Jerry album drawn from this concert, the Keystone Jam and Soul Roach. This was the Garcia-Saunders band featuring John Kahn, Martin Fierro and drummer Paul Humphreys, a precursor to the Legion of Mary, which, of course, would feature Ron Tutt on drums.
Finally this week, we have the Jerry Garcia Band playing Don't Let Go from 9/2/89 at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland. I distinctly recall a friend leaning over to me during this jam, while we standing in the 10th row, and commenting “this is how the Dead used to jam.” This one gets wayyyyyy out there. And, because it's such a great jam vehicle, here is another version of Don't Let Go from 7/29/77 with which to compare our 1989 rendition.

Man ... I did not see my first show 'till 9/5/88 when I was 18 ,but my friends and I had been trading tapes since around '83 .I already had about 400 hours of Dead by '87 and could play most of the tunes on guitar.I just was too young and didn't have the ways or means to go to a show 'till '88. For us it was all about the music ,and we were unhappy with all the folks who started showing up for all the wrong reasons . I remember kids up the street who hated the Dead all the sudden swapped out their Iron Maiden shirts ,for tie dyes and most of them had never even heard Dark Star.
It was great for new people to get turned on and some of them were in it for the music ,but sadly a lot of them just went to shows to get dope, get really wasted and trash the place .Older local heads accepted us because we were there for the music . Some of those older friends had been going to shows since the late '60's . I guess I said all that to say that some young people who came to shows in the late '80's were not touch heads at all and had already learned good Dead show (or anywhere for that matter)ethics before they ever saw a show.It was better to get turned on by 5/8/77 than to get turned on by the party in the lot.At least if you got turned on by 5/8/77 it was the music that did it for you. For me some of the albums like Workingmans Dead and Dead set got me going. I think 5/6/70 and 2/14/68 were among my first live tapes .I already had a lot of shows by the time I got Cornell .
Thanks for the "Don't let go" from Merriweather 9/2/89. I was there and I thought it was really good .Not to many rowdy folks showed up for those shows .It was a great relief from the RFK '89 shows I saw 2 months earlier that was loaded with people who didn't care about the music,not to mention Merriweather has great sound and scenery compared to any stadium gig.I bought the Pure Jerry release of both 9/1 and 9/2/89 shows and I must say I have been happier with those CD's than just about any other recent release from the Dead camp. Jerry's solo's are so dreamy and soulful and there are hardly any flubs present . I highly recommend it . Don't get me wrong about the '89 RFK shows I enjoyed the music ,but not so much the scene.
It should not matter when you started to like the Dead as long as were in it for the music first and foremost...
Thanks again and keep the music coming . A good copy of "Box of Rain" from 9/17/70 would be awesome or maybe the 11/19/72 version...

AS far as Sept 6 . 80 , the most common audience is the Omni directional Nak 300 s
Now , i ve heard another Aud of the show , as filler on a tape that has the FINEST sound i ve heard on an audience recording . It s engrossing how an audience recording can ' sound ' better than a mixing desk recording .

and on and on... fortunately my current motor vehicle is equipped with
most excellent tape deck,just like the old days.Getting back to the car
(sometimes with difficulty)and inserting the warm cassette master into
the tape player to hear just what the hell happened back there was the top
end of technology then.What fun
That Lewistown show is good , and i ve heard two rigs before .
Id have to hear what is on this weeks TS , through a stereo with ' better ' speakers than my cputer , to see what it could be
A friend of mine from CT , put a filler on a tape of mine like 9 years ago , the 2nd set from Playin through after drums . And its some of THE BEST music ive heard
This music , as well as it was for many of us , keeps on giving us happy moments , and smiles . Good music , some people say can even cure illnesses ( and mediocre music can as well turn us ill = ) ] . Or lets just say turn a so so day into a better one . Peace , much peace friends
p.s. I want to deepen a bit on the good music thing . We humans can react negatively to certain sounds ( music , a car horn , someones specific voice etc ) . Just as we can react very positively to a nice melody , a ' friend's ' voice . I remember visiting Niagara falls during the 98 TOO tour , whle in the Buffalo area . And the sound of the falls just calms me , and elevates me to unthought of levels = ) . Rock on -- We should all try and focus on that daily , of good mention , after work , in the evening , before heading off to sleep . Thanks for the space

Us old tapers are curious about that kinda stuff.
And it is great that sometimes, just sometimes, that the tape that is the best, is one that the 'taper' provides. ;o} (not the soundboard!)
Hearing the Dead whip up that crowd, who replies by energizing the Dead, who then feeds off of Jerry, and then Phil decides to employ 'philobombs' which is challenged by the percussion frenzy with Billy & Mickey and then Brent makes his run.. and then the crowd erupts back, as the wheel (esp that day) goes round. "Bound to cover just a little more ground, bound to cover....." You all know the rest.
What taper did capture the magic that night?
didn't intend any disrespect towards anyone - got too clever with my wording, and the general nostalgia of shows attended, the friends that I met and gathered, and realizing all the folks that found the music were an ever changing lot. Jaime is right about the band, and they indeed provided a soundtrack to my growing up, and yet I never seem to grow out of the musical discovery. Peace - Jim
I have to share some personal feelings and thoughts about your comment on this music in general .
How many groups during your youth or duringyour life did what the Dead did ?
As the saying in Winterland 78 said ' Theyre not only the best at what they do , they re the only ones that do what they do '
We are incredibly wealthy in terms of good music on planet earth . The Dead phenomenon has no parallel or comparison . There are a couple of really good bands that come close , but the GD are the ' godfathers ' of this jam band phenomenon
Just to share w you folks , im a sober Dead head , I gave up ' dangerous ' lifestyles on may 20 , 1995 . A Wharf rat we used to call . The music for me was as essential back in the day , and after . And boy was i lucky to have devoured completely two hot shows - as a sober head - on July 5 and 9 in 95
Life is about rectifying character flaws , and turning them into positive atributes .
Lets hope our humanity keeps maturing - and freeing itself from its flaws - so that we can have a safe and clean - unpolluted - place to live the rest of our days here ,and for our future generations . Whom I hope can enjoy this music as well as we have

its also interesting to hear the point of view you gave about all the new tourheads who came on the scene after Cornell 77 got so widely distributed. As a "In the Darkhead" I always thought my generation of heads were the pariahs who ruined to scene. Good to hear that some earlier deadheads also were looked down upon.

This show always brings some fond memories. This is perhaps the best recording I've heard of this show. Of all the many great "Rhythm Devils" we were treated to over the years, this night is definately one of the best. Maybe we could hear the drums>NFA from this show sometime. Shine On
