    Remastered?

Aside from Steal Your Face, are the other albums a new remaster different from the remasters found in the Beyond Description box set?

    Why?
Why would anyone buy this download? This collection of vinyl is for fans of modern 180g vinyl, which I recently was able to buy the vinyl box. These new vinyl remasters sound much better than my original LPs, especially Steal Your Face. All are available on CD. Probably the HD FLAC 192khz/24bit sounds the best, and Apple Lossless 44khz/16bit is CD quality, but they both miss the point - it's all about the vinyl here! The vinyl box is a treasure to behold and listen to.

I'm hoping to hear a definitive answer to this question, too! If the commenter below is in contact with Rhino about the mp3 issue, maybe he will get a chance to ask about this.

I picked up a new copy of this box set on Friday. It sounds stunning. Steal Your Face sounds so good on vinyl. It's truly amazing. It sounds like a new record to me. Phil is right there, and the vocals sound great. This is some Good Old Grateful Dead for sure. The record has a nice flow from side to side too. Blues For Allah is gorgeous as well. Mars Hotel sounds great. Haven't checkout out Wake of the Flood yet. Secondary market vinyl copies can be had for a song (no pun intended). The packaging is beautiful too. I think they only made 5900 copies of the LP box set. Totally worth shelling out $90 for it

it's gotta sound better than the record. that record had the worst sound you can imagine. if there is any cleanup at all it is better than the record ever was. the record highlights were the performances only and the photos in the jacket. the sound; pretty much unfortunately terrible. by the way, the 3 remastered studio albums are just plain extraordinary and beautiful. The band should get far more credit for this period of creative spark than it has. This is really great studio work that really shows off another giant leap in the skills of each band member from even the highlights of Workingmans Dead and American Beauty. These are real achievements and deserve note! Wier's playing is just knockout great. listen with headphones if you can. His ability and ear are uncanny and he was just beginning to really innovate beyond the norm. beautiful.

SYF is interesting. The 'open air' sound which I always assumed was pretty open audience mics, has been reduced quite a bit. The bass is much more present in the mix. Some of the harshness around Jerry's vocals has been reduced (Cold Rain). YMMV though. There is a charm to the more open mix and it feels a bit more compressed without that air.

    Found it!
I found this release on Amazon Music Unlimited. I am giving it a spin there, before I pay for it in my cart. It is on Spotify also, I just don't pay for that so it is shuffle only. Sounds like a typical 74 show. With a little mic distortion on S, Sh, ch, T sounds. I have never heard this release. But I'm four songs in and I'm good with it. It is not polished as the Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack. I will check back to see if someone with more experience can do a comparison. Not sure what to think if the Apple Lossless are not as advertised and are indeed mp3. edit: just found it on apple itunes too. So if anyone has apple music subscription you can spin it there.

Wonder how the STEAL YOUR FACE will sound? Anyone own the record? Heard this was a sonically flawed recording from the start?!?! Haven't listened to this one in a while....this might just get me to purchase.

Curious about the remastering. I wonder if it sounds anything like the GD Movie Soundtrack release now. I have often said that they should mix down the whole run with sound like the soundtrack release - which I happen to like very much - and call it "Replace Your Face". That would be the decent thing to do after the shortchange act of the original release!

Any chance Steal Your Face can be released separately as the 192/24 versions of the other albums are already available?

Are these new remasterings (of the studio albums) or the same as the previously released 24/192 files?

I just bought the Apple Lossless version if this digital box set and what I downloaded were mp3 files. I contacted customer service to ask what's up.

The new LP has been remastered from the original tapes. According to a note in the boxset booklet, SYF was speed corrected by Plangent Processes and digital filters applied to eliminate phase shift. Final mastering EQ was used on the mid range to "reduce some of the cloudiness of the mixes, and low end to tighten up the bass. Some 'mid/side' EQ was also applied to focus the stereo image, which is a bit wild on these mixes." As such it is much closer to the soundtrack album in terms of quality.

Thanks Steve for your info on this release. I purchased and downloaded the Apple Lossless version of these files yesterday and they were not Apple Lossless but rather mp3 files (320 kbps-MPEG-1, Layer 3). I was very disappointed and have contacted customer support. To me they sound EXACTLY like the tracks I ripped from the original release of the CDs from way back when. Do you have the FLAC files? I'm curious if anyone does. Cheers, PH

Just listened again and in fact, the sound is improved. So the issue here-as a caveat to all-is that the files listed as Apple LossLess are merely mp3s. I'l post when the Rhino man contacts me....

It seems inevitable (in a good way) that the 10/16 - 10/20/74 run will be released in its entirety at some point.

From memory the CDs were a significant improvement on the sound quality of the original LPs. Hopefully this will show up more when you get the downloads you actually paid for.
