I come from England, but live in France right now. I got into the Dead in 73, missed their 74 tour of Europe and did not see them until they came again in ’81 (my first show was my birthday show). I lost touch in the 80’s as the releases and European tours dried up and I was not hooked into any trader networks. Just played and loved the old vinyls. My interest revived when Dicks Picks and Vault Series started appearing. I last saw the Dead in 1990 on their final trip to Europe, and I was able to take my 8 year old son to one of the shows! I have been working and living in many parts of the world the last 12 years as an environmental and wildlife conservation adviser and trainer in developing countries. I still travel a lot and never leave home without an iPod stuffed with GD goodies. I may not have seen that many shows, but I have grooved to the Dead in at least 50 countries!! This vining community is great, long may it last. I’ve worked out how to do torrents and such, but my connection is very slow here and there’s nothing quite like a package of discs in the post! SPECIAL OFFER. If anyone wants some help keeping track of their GD collection, I can send them a simple Excel spreadsheet listing the dates and venues of all GD shows and the dates of most official live releases. It has 4 columns: Date, Venue, City/State/Country, Official Release with Material from Show. You can add more columns to check your shows as you collect them. It is a 200kb file; PM me with an email address if you want it sent as a file attachment.

Like Oroboros and Hal R, I also worked in the mental health field. I worked at a group home and an apartment program in Michigan (where I am from) while in college then for a couple years in Boston after college. Yeah, I moved to Boston AFTER college. Entire town is made up of college students! Live in NYC now, practicing law as a contract attorney. Married to a wonderful and understanding (re: the Dead) woman and the rest of my immediate family consists of a golden retriever and two cats. Got on the bus in the early 90's while in college, only saw 9 shows but loved it, only in retrospect did I realize I saw the band in their decline. Before I got into vining, Dick's Picks were my main source for Dead enjoyment, followed by a radio program here called Morning Dew. Have about 200 tapes that I made listening to the program. Most of my knowledge of the Dead come from those sources as well as the Taping Compendiums (must haves IMO). Don't listen to the radio program any longer, like to go out on Sat nights now. I absolutely love being part of the vining community, so glad I discovered it. I go in and out of heavy Dead listening. For the 6 mos before finding this board, I listened exclusively to jazz. I have an interest in classic rock (someone made fun of Boston on one of these boards recently, HISSS, GREAT debut album) and early 80's music (childhood, I guess). Mostly it is the Dead and jazz. I have a pretty good collection of Miles and Coltrane, but I go a little deeper with Art Pepper, Dave Brubeck, and Don Ellis. Back to the Dead, I think the peak periods were '69, spring and fall '72, fall '73, all of '77, and very early '78. Of course, I love Dark Star and Dew, but I'd list Help>Slip>Franklin's, China>Rider, Scarlet>Fire and St. Stephen as favorite tracks/combos. I also love Brent!

brewsterboy - I thought you were a home brewer of beer and thus the title. By the way, I heard your little town mentioned on NPR the other day with the primaries and thought - I know someone there. How are the butterflies? Sunshine Daydream - Bob - I was born in 1956, I guess quite a few of us here are choice relics from the 50's. Oroboros - I work in the Mental Health field as well. Ok, I guess I’ll just jump right in on this boat too.My name is Andy (Brewster boy) and the Brewster is for Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH where I went to high school and discovered the Dead from one of my friends. That was in 1977 and I had the opportunity to see these talented people play many times at a great time on their musical journey. My last show was at Soldier Field in 1990 or ’91 on a really cold summer day. I’m in my 50th. year and living in the White Mountain National Forest. I am property manager of a fine Inn just below Crawford Notch near Bartlett, NH. My favorite show has to be 9/6/80 (check this one out in the show look-up) because it was just Sooo Right! Everything about being young, free, high, with friends and a sense of community while just being there was something that will never be forgotten. Anyway, back around ’92 I lost all my Dead material (bummer) and had fallen from the world of the Maxell UD-XL2. With the help of everyone on this forum I have managed to start rebuilding what I lost and have missed so dearly over the years. It sounds weird but I used to have those shows that everyone had and still would like to posses some of those wicked boards like 12/1/79, 8/28/82, ’78 capitol theater, those Portchester, NY shows and many others I can’t think of off the top of my head. Hopefully these will become offerings over time. I wish everyone Peace and music dancing through the air. Andy

Last year, they were rockin, and it was funny but not everyone knew the songs....just felt the vibe. It was the closest I've come to a Dead experience that I've been to in about 4 1/2 years. ABB baby, cuz I'm always tied to the Whip Post. _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? I was fortunate enough (thank you Rhino/Dead/Marye!!!) to have attended the "Taxi Tour" shows yesterday. The first show was at the Orensanz, an intimate former synagogue, where Bobby, Phil and Warren performed accoustically. I arrived around 415 (the show began at 5pm) and found out from my friend that I had just missed the boys hanging out with the small group of Heads outside. Oh well. The show was AWESOME! Before starting, the band asked the crowd to keep noise to a minimum and the request was heeded, so I suspect that the recordings sound great. Bobby forgot a verse in the set-opening Dire Wolf but the crowd helped him out. None of us thought we would hear a mind-blowing deep space Bird Song at 5:15 on a Monday, but that is exactly what happened. This was followed by a nice Cumberland Blues, an unexpected Pride of Cucomonga, and an equally surprising Lazy River Road, and a fun Casey Jones. At this point it was 6 pm, the band had to get to the next location, and we didn't think there would be an encore. Fortunately, we were wrong. Ripple. Perfect ending to a perfect set.

The second leg of the "Taxi Tour" was only a couple of miles away at the Gramercy Theatre and I convinced my friend to take the subway rather than a cab. We grabbed a quick bite after arriving then entered the venue, another intimate setting. I would estimate that there were about 500 people there. Unlike the Orensanz, which did not sell beverages of any kind, drinks were available at the Gramercy. Billy received the loudest cheer when he appeared onstage. The band wasted no time, opening with a Jam then segued into a long Playing in the Band. They were clearly "on." A fun Good Lovin' was next. Right before Bobby stepped to the microphone for the 3d verse or so, Phil started playing a funky bass line and the lyrics would have to wait. No complaints. Every member seemed to be enjoying themself but Phil and Billy especially; both had big grins on their faces for much of the set. After a well-played and -received Wheel, the highlight of the set appeared, a refreshing Franklin's Tower. Bobby changed the pace of the lyrics to all the Jerry songs, especially Franklin's, so we wantabe singers in the crowed were a little off with the lyrics. The band encored with an enjoyable Touch of Grey, which seemed especially poignant with Bobby's graying hair, beard and mustache. We will survive!

The final set of the "Taxi Tour" was performed at the Roseland Ballroom in midtown. We helped a few out of town Heads navigate the subway. Unlike the other two venues, this was not so intimate, but still held only a few thousand people. We'd already gotten our closeups of the band, so we decided to stay back and let others fight for the prime stagefront vantage points. We continued imbibing cold beverages (Guinness at Gramercy, Beck's here as it was the best they had). I figured the band would be tired at this point, having performed on The View that morning and two sets already this evening, but it didn't show. A hot Althea opened the show, followed by rocking Cassidy. Uncle John's Band and Eyes of the World were well-played, but the highlight here was the St. Stephen > Dark Star. The band really stretched out on both of these primal Dead tunes. At this point I noticed two things: (1) Warren's singing reminded me of Brent's (a VERY good thing) and (2) my friend was more than a little drunk (a not so good thing). We had had a long day, so I walked him home (he lives conveniently around the corner from Roseland) and missed the final couple songs (Sugar Magnolia, NFA I believe). All in all a highly enoyable evening, with the first two sets being the most fun, probably because of the intimate settings, and the acoustic set perhaps being the best of all. Thanks again Marye/Rhino/Dead!!!

There are some posts about the three shows on the Dead To Tour In Spring Vine. You may want to check them out and maybe re-post your comments there. I also went to all three venues and had a blast. In my opinion, I thought Warren was a little tentative and really began to open up during Eyes at the Roseland, where they finished with a flourish--Eyes>St. Stephen>Dark Star>Sugar Mag. Encore: Not Fade Away I totally agree with you about the first two venues being great, but i thought the band had more energy at Roseland. All in all a wonderful experience. but came across this thread ^ threads are we called it on another board - back in the day... try to ignore the title - but this is a little trip thru the vineyard history I read most of this newest to oldest - but will recommend that you read it oldest to newest but doesn't really matter Has it been 5 years? ;) Note: I have PM'd Marye to see if this can be moved to the vineyard and now notice that the title actually makes sense (it was a stray vine before).

I realize it's totally unrelated to anything, but no way in hell is anything on the WA side of the Columbia a bedroom community SE of Portland. I think your compass got dosed.
