After seeing the Dead every year from 76'-80', they didn't play in the Detroit area 81'-83' ( I was away at college and living in Alaska during that time anyways) & when they played in 84' I was stuck in army basic training in Alabama, but that's another story! Anyways, they FINALLY performed in Detroit again in 88' and I was more than ready to see them again. This tour, of course, is when Touch of Grey was on the charts, so it was a sell out (which didn't always happen in Detroit, which may explain why they skipped playing here sometimes?). In any event, the show was smokin' hot and the audience ate it up and I felt right back home again, despite the presence of all the new "Touch of Grey posers"!
I was at this show and I could swear they played Birdsong and not To Lay Me Down in the first set. Deadbase and every other source I have looked at shows To Lay Me Down, but I remember Birdsong. Does anyone have a tape or way to corroborate my fuzzy memory from 20 years ago?

At the show also and do have the entire show taped :-), but sorry, no Birdsong
This was my first show. I remember things kicking in as I stood on the steps going into the venue. These were not just any steps they circled the entire venue overlooking The Detroit River. If it hadn't been for some gentle nudjing from my friend I might have stayed on those steps until the show was over. Walked in in the middle of Bucket and the hallways were just amazing people everywhere groovin. Nice way to start seeing shows and it was definately the Detroit Vibe (in a good way!), Brokedown sent us home and I thought Jerrys voice sounded like it was underwater. I also remember the Renaissance center melting as I walked out. Crazy night in Motown.
I will verify Alemakers' statement. Was at show and have both sets on tape....sorry, no bird song!!!
hey Alemaker.....is that you Pat S.????

I was on the stage level just to the right of the keyboards. I could see Jerry looking at Brent all night. Jerry was watching me and my Friends dance all night..I swear I held up a lighter and turned up the flame as I was lighting something?? I could see the flame from my lighter in Jerrys glasses, and he just grinned and started into Must have been the Roses...Classic Jerry
