The New Winterland
I still vividly remember this night. I flew in from Lincoln, NE (I'd been staying there with my gf for the summer), got picked up by the Wiz and drove straight to (what was then called) the Oakland Auditorium Arena. What a contrast - from literally middle America, Nebraska style, to people freaking freely in the park. Even though I was a student at Sonoma State at the time, it still was a bit of a culture shock (even more shocking since I'd been a dyed in the wool freak since the early 70's - LOL).
Rating this show is tough for me. Overall, I give it a 3 - decent first set and beginning of second - but mostly warm up - getting used to the ambience of their new Bay Area Home. Howevah - that Playing in the Band is one for the ages. The space it dissolves into shows the potential of the Brent-era Dead - *very* out there, with psychedelic synth washes and huge Phil bombs (LOVE the sound system he was playing through then - very crisp, deep, well-articulated and crunchy). Even Allison's whinnying screams on the aud tapes can't detract from the intensity of this section of the show. Very good memories.

First Tiger Show
According to jerrygarcia.com, this was supposedly the first time Jerry performed with his new Alembic Guitar (affectionately known as "Tiger"). The fist song played was "Jack Straw."
