    #IWasThere!

Great run of shows! Neville Brothers opened, as they also did in 1986.

What a LONG, STRANGE trip for me...
Flew out of Clev alone that morning to make these shows. My bf was having foot surgery, so was supposed to come out the following day. While taxiing down the runway, realized I had his ticket on me! oops. But no biggie, I'll FedEx them as soon as I get there. Well, hit denver @ 8am in a crazy snow-storm, waited forever on the runway, was finally next in line to go, and they closed the airport. Arrrgh! Spent next 32 hours wondering if I'd EVER get out. Ended up flying into SFO instead of oakland, luggage didn't make it there (at least I did!), went directly to the post office, fed ex'd his ticket (but to the wrong zip code - so he didn't even make it until NYE - better late than never!). Crazy, crazy.

During the break, down in the pit, I met a nice fellow who had come from India to see the show. He said that he had only heard one Dead record, and that the music was so beautiful and moving that he had to come see them in person. I said, "Blues For Allah"? He said, No,"Shakedown Street"! I was on acid and found this to be quite amusing. Then a very jolly fellow in a GIGANTIC tie-tie t-shirt, asked where I was from.Feeling rather conspicuous (in a room of 50,000 people), I mustered up "Oregon". Then it was a lengthy conversation trying to teach this guy, who was from New Jersey, how to pronounce the name of my home state. Luckily, the 2nd set rendered all speaking moot. Oh, yeah, also my favorite Peggy-O.

During the only few moments of sunshine all afternoon, wepassed through the working end of a beautiful rainbow somewhere near the CA Aqueduct on the way to the show from Fresno. At the show, I was amazed by a very long, complex, emotional and intriguing version of Stella Blue and I have always liked receiving that cosmically charged mail from Desolation Row. Perhaps, that fabled Pot O' Gold is still on it's way, or no ?!! Either way, The Dead helped me survive the Reagan years, so I am way ahead of the game. Cheers !!

Sometime during this song, and for about 6 hours afterward, EVERYTHING that I saw was a very deep and glowing, royal-blue color. (The exact same color of the spotlight on Jerry) At first I was a bit alarmed, but then it became quite pleasant actually. I'd like to take that ride again.
