    A little too much fun
What I should have said…The trip began when Jerry jumped from the back of his black, blue eyed, Beamer and wished us a good show. My high school prom date asked “is it time” E and I answered yes. Too late I thought. We stared at each other questioningly. I ask E "you ready”. Yes was all he said. Knowing an anchor was needed we tried to stay in contact. This became impossible. The preordained mind drift set in. Like two distracted moths briefly circling the same light we went. Walls, floor, ceiling collide. My speech betrays me. E is lost. Notes dance before my eyes, a girl twirls dressed in tie die “Mississippi half step todaloo”. I’m gone. What they say is true. Purple is a primal somehow noble color. Then it’s over, well not quiet. The disparate comfort of the crowd recedes. Oakland California New Year’s 1981 I walk two feet off the ground for fifty blocks. The characters of the night surround me unwilling to touch the crazy white boy my savior Pierces me with an unbelieving stare. I understand, Get on the bus. Broadway is all I can manage until relief icy red white and blue tubes of brew. What I should have said, “no it is not time”.
