Nutty crowd scene at Foxboro
Super-hot day in the relentless Massachussets sun. . . Edie Brickell opened and got a little more loudness than than in DC two days before. . . at the break, there were so many people trying to get down onto the main (GA) floor, that security eventually moved the barricades right up against the wall so whoever wanted to jump down could do so without getting hurt. After the initial flood of people moved down, they put the barriers back in place with a gap between the seating area and the floor. . . I recall the break music between the New Bohemians set and the Dead's including Norwegian Wood (She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere, So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair!)
First set was hot, if a tad sloppy, during FAR FROM ME, on the backing vocal "SO LONG" part I was unconsciously waving bye bye to Brent. . . He had been rather intense the whole tour, and this felt like a goodbye to all the northeast heads. Eerie foreshadowing! Candyman was powerful, the crowd went nuts for the IF I HAD ME A SHOTGUN I'D BLOW YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL line, which I thought was pretty creepy. . . When they get back to Memphis there'll be one less man alive. . . next tune was MEMPHIS BLUES! (Sure enough, they didn't actually return to Memphis until the Pyramid shows in 1995, and one less of them was alive for those gigs in the gigantic tomb!)
I remember thinking to myself during this show, that the difference between a soundboard and audience tape would be pretty intense. . . the audience tape captures the sound of the crowd like one more instrument, the board tape recreates the stage sound on the "PA system" where it's played back, and could make for a very different impression. This was one of the events which let me to become very interested in what I call "soundscape preservation", wherein I like to capture what actually happened for posterity. Board tapes are neat too, but as historic documents, the audience sound is what 80,000 people heard!
Second set was a big jam-out, I don't remember too much as a highlight, but the double encore (only one of the summer) of THIS COULD BE THE LAST TIME WE BID YOU GOODNIGHT was pretty epic. . . And it WAS the last time they bade goodnight to New England with Mr Mydland. . .
". . . Music is the best!" (fz)
The longest drive
It seemed to take an eternity to get to this place after the DC show. We were lucky, we arrived before all the back log of traffic. One of the few shows that I didn't have a ticket for and I searched and searched with no success. Everyone started heading toward the show, it was time. I stood around and watched insanity going on. Some jerk just ripped someone's tickets of their hands and walked in the show. It was chaos where I was, lucky for me because of the chaos I was able to simply walk right into the show without a ticket. It was like I was invisible. I had to walk through a turn-style and then through another line of people checking tickets and no one saw me. Of course I was giddy once I realized I was successful and then ran into the show. I sat down next to a girl name Heather (who told me about Phish) who was a Brenthead and told me that she had just walked in too. I imagine we weren't the only 2 that were able to do walk in that day. She was thrilled with the Brent material which made me appreciate his singing more. I was sad for my friend who I believed did not get in until I heard the GDTRFB and knew that she too had made her way into the show. Fun stuff.
Well I met the beautiful man
Well I met the beautiful man from San Fran again....he and his tour-mate hooked me up with a ride to the Buffalo show...it was nice after being cramped, five of us in a car for many hours. Show was wonderful especially since I hooked up with some old friends whom I hadn't seen in awhile.
A Favorite....
Of the 30 shows I saw, this is one of my favorite. Excellent setlist and pretty good seats. The Shakedown is really strong as well as the Eyes. Good times.
BLESSINGS BRO BRENT
DONT YOU TELL US MASS.HEADS AINT GOT NO HEART,A SHOW THAT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET SHAKDWN TO BRENT MAKIN THE DOSE MAKE MY BODY FEEL ABLAZED
Son Stephen
Brought my 11 year old son, Stephen, to his first show. Had to advise him that he was too young to take the "Flintstones" vitamins he was offered my our seat mates. Had a really good time. Now 29 year old son is a music nut. Still go to shows with him.
A new aproach
I tried something new and took 5 uninitiated friends to this show...they had no idea what they were in for LOL...After the worlds longest 3 mile drive from the highway to the stadium we made camp. The girls ( Janine,Helene, and Smurffet ) and I went off to do a little "shopping" We found a guy with some huge nitrous bottles in the back of a van, driving to Foxboro the girls were reluctant to smoke a little weed, but now they seemed determined to suck up all the nitrous in Massachusets. Meanwhile back at home camp Mark and Henry had scored some schrooms, Mark was a longtime Zappa fan so he had a idea what he was in for, just not on the scale the Dead would provide. Once inside I think they realize we were talking about things happining on a biblical proportion! The show itself was unfreakinbelievable, great set list, you couldn't ask for a better second set. I remember during the drums on the big screens there was some kind of rubber baby doll head making these wicked tourtured faces, I thought it was a little weird but the girls who were still sucking up nitro were pretty freaked out by it. All in all a great day/night spent with good friends. It's been almost 20 years but every time we get together we still talk about that day.
