Notable for the St. Stephen tease at the beginning of what turned into Spanish Jam. Red Rocks was probably the greatest venue ever, for any band.
Boulder in July 1982 was the setting for the Kerouac Conference -- 25th Anniversary of the publication of On The Road. The conference was sponsored by Naropa Institute, CU, New Age Magazine, and Grateful Dead. Luminaries in attendence are too numerous to list, but included Kesey & Babbs, who showed home movies of Cassady on the bus. Capping the conference were three nights at Red Rocks with the Dead. I went on this night with girlfriend Mary, and superfreak Crazy Carl, and Carl's adopted friends, a group of scruffy, unwashed tour-heads led by a small-time criminal Carl later dubbed "Stanley Lice-head." Being that it was Red Rocks, of course it was pouring rain. It was unbeliveably cold and miserable up there, but the band rocked our socks off. Two guys with push brooms swept water off the stage as they played; and as thunder and lightning crashed and flashed over the amphitheater Weir was heard to say, "Don't be surprised if we go up in shower of sparks." I didn't eat the blotter in my pocket, and ended up buying a poncho from Feyline staff for $5. After set 1 Mary and I left the venue and went looking for the car. We'd had enough. But Stanley and crew had moved it. Fortunately, ironically, as soon as we stepped into the parking lot, it stopped raining. We listened to the rest of the show from the bottom of the steps. Finally found Carl and Stanley as the show let out, and we located the car and began to depart. We made it as far as the entrance to the park when the clutch cable broke. No longer in the mood for anything but bed, I grabbed Mary's hand and crossed the road to hitchhike. We were picked up in less than five minutes by a woman from Boulder, who took us to Mary's front door. Miracle.
This is the first show I remember seeing the sticker Dew me. Morning Dew me of course
