The Ventura scene was a bitchin' braaa. The 1987 summer tour was kinda like a rebirth of the Dead, after Jerry's 1986 coma. The So Cal beach vibe, the surf, and a camping scene that was still loose that epic times were had by many. Before the Sunday show I recall waiting inside the venue for the band to come on stage as the PA broadcast the NBA Finals Lakers v. Celtics game 6. The crowd was really pumped as the Lakers won the game and clinched the series. Then the show started and the real fun began yet once again. The 2nd set was classic Scarlet, Fire, Playin, Terrapin that rewarded the hardcore heads that survived another Dead 3 day camping adventure by the Pacific Ocean. After we bid good night and packed up camp and headed back to San Diego for college classes Monday morning.
The 14th was flag day. The Holiday Inn had a flag flyin' at every room. Unfortunately, it was getaway day too. Before the show, was watching game 7 celtics/lakers. Rooting for the celtics- oh well. Show had a bouncey, happy feel to it. Quinn was a nice send off. Had to drive to LAX for the red eye back to NYC. Just made the flight thanks to Ellie. Saw Robert Parrish - the chief - in the airport. I'm 6 4 and that guy was tall. Made it to work on Monday with Quinn the eskimo still ringin' in my head!
Just a great fun place to spend a summer weekend was Ventura County Fairgrounds, each and every year that the boys played here. My girl and I walked out of the show during Throwing stones to do some off shore drilling as she called it. Never happened waters to cold but we did go wade out into the ocean and listen to the Throwing stones threw Quinn out there about ankle deep after a minute or two in the cooler waters of Ventura's Pacific Ocean. Glad I did also was fun listening to the band out there in the water.
From here it was back up north to the Greeks, owe to be and young and free.
