There was something sonically about the civic center and on this night Dan Healy really had the place dialed in to perfection. There are certain versions of songs that reveal themeselves to you, and become seared into your memories forever. This night it was the Box of Rain second set opener. The Foolish Heart was also my favourite version. Jerry,s solo during the peak jam filled the arena until it achieved this perfect resonance with the civic centers bones...and are bones for that matter.
Also the China Doll slayed me. The line "A pistol shot at twelve o'clock the bells of heaven ring" sank all the way in . Brent's harpsichord sound was perfectly chilling.
I know that there were some really good shows this Spring but this one is a sleeper candidate for one of the best. The rolling jam out of Eyes is very focused. Agree with previous reviewer that I've not heard (live or on tape) a better Foolish Heart anywhere. Glad I made it to these two Hartford shows. For some silly reason I attempted to take college seriously this semester. Wouldn't you know it, I missed Branford as a result.
OK > 2ND SET,, IS JUST SOOO PSYCHEDELIC ,.,.
THE JAM AFTER 'EYES' GOES INTO WHAT I CALL
' CARNIVAL JAM '
THEN DRUMZ IS LIKE 'CHURCH BELLS AND ASTERIODS'
MODERN GD AT THEIR BEST.... Josh E Bear !!
Went to this show and scored a ticket, but my girlfriend at the time came from NYC with other folks and didn't have one. It was a tough one and we couldn't get the second ticket, so we figured it being broadcast we would forego this one. I sold mine and we stayed outside and went to my friends car to listen to it on the radio and pass the time so to speak. Best show I never saw if you know what I mean! :) Didn't feel like a I missed out at all. Sounded good though. Memorable night for different reasons!
This show is really incredible. A radio interview with Mickey Hart afterwards confirms that the band felt on. After the show we had to drive back up to Ithaca. Spring break was over...back to class :( Going through the catskills it started to snow making the drive all the more memorable.

I have no idea why but Hartford seemed to be a place The Dead really turned it on? You would be hard pressed to find a bad performance in the Insurance Capital?
I love the Brokedown Palace when Bobby breaks out this line after "Fare you well my honey"
I got off the bus for over 2 years and this run was my coming back.It was my home town too so I hooked up with many friends. These shows were annouced very late, it was the Warocks tour remember? We scored tickets luckly. Like Dorothy said there is no place like home. The first night was amazing but from the opening notes of Bucket my buddy and I knew it was special night, right before the end of Bucket I turned and said Bertha and bam it happened. He gave me a big smile and high five and we were off. The We Can you Run was a song I never heard and it blew me away, the lyrics and harmonies were amazing. The set just got better and we got an explosive Deal for the ending. I had listened to Built to Last alot, more than tapes at this time, so I knew Foolish Heart was "the" song from the album and when Jerry started playing the hints to start I was very excited. Phil said hold on buddy and we got the only Box of Rain of the tour which was amazing, the perfect song to hear the Dead play after almost two years of not touring. The Foolish Heart is easliy one of the best for two reasons, it has a long intro and Jerry sings the final verse twice which greatly extends the playing on this version. It is more than you could ask for simply beautiful. Yes the jams after Eyes is one for the ages too, great sound scapes and passionate playing from all. The rest of the set is super, Gimme Some Lovin out of China doll was a total surprise. GDTRFB is rocking as is Around. Brokedown is perfect. I never left home again!
As amazing as the spring tour '90 was, this show remains my favorite...
The space>China Doll was some of the most amazing Dead I have ever heard....
I 'm just finishing this show from putting it on CD from Tape and this is an excellent show
I hope this doesn't double post- Can't find my comments-
I was as this show as a result of going to the previous night.
Hartford, was never really a fan friendly venue, they roll up the sidewalks when people leave work at 5.
My friend Alex and I were wandering around playing our guitars when I stepped on what looked like a ticket- it was a ticket master version of a floor seat fo the next night 9-19-90.
(I used to embellish the story by saying we were playing "I need Miracle" at that time, but I think it was really just a Bertha Jam)
When I spoke the folks around me, most had gotten their tickets from a scalper, so I felt a bit better.
I was finally able to reciprocate by giving away lower bowl seats to the 2009 2nd night Dead show in East Rutherford, NJ.
Looking forward to hearing the remastered show in the new Box Set ( Hopefully arriving today!)
