Seems like Bobby broke a string or something and left the stage for a long time...

Bobby had an equipment tantrum and left the stage. I think it was a MIDI/ electronics prob, I think- a string would have been a quick fix. Anyway, Bobby was clearly pissed. But Garcia was HOT. The night before he was turning himself down, we could barely hear him some times. But THIS NIGHT, he was kickin' ass and takin' names. That jam before drums was just so awesome... "Jerry's not going in! Jerry's liking this too much!" I remember dancing as hard as I could thinking, "I can keep this up as long as you can, Old Man!" "When I had no wings to fly, you flew to me"

This show was such a gem - one of my all-time favorites. I think Jerry had just recently got the new composite guitar and like kweeks said, he was crankin' it up baby!!! I remember the show from the night before being weak, and this one just coming out of nowhere to blow us away. This Stella Blue is one of the best they ever performed - if not THE best, in my humble opinion. Not too many dry eyes in the place when Jerry brought the house down at the end - one of his most passionate performances of all time. This was one of those beautiful shows that showed just how much Jerry and the boys still had to offer as they approached the 30-year mark, and goes to prove that the post-Brent era wasn't the wash that many people make it out to be. Alas, this was one of the last few glimpses of Jerry at his absolute finest before the disease took over completely. Beautiful Stuff!!!

Post Brent wasn't a wash just different!!! Loved the Richfield shows. I might have seen every one. Always enjoyed Jerry's ballads, but also enjoyed the fast paced encores as well maybe even more. I would love to see some or even 1 of these runs show up on DVD.

We all felt that when Jerry finished the bridge jam and he hit the last stanza of lyrics he felt the special touch that was that Stella Blue. He was choking away the tears. Did anyone else catch that? That was definitely a special night. Picasso Moon was repeating over and over in my head during the LSD surges while post show partying @ the Holiday Inn.

blue lights shinin on jerry...like a cosmic beam

Christopher SeldenThe previous night was just okay and it wasn't just the song selection it was the sound. The rumor was before the show that Healy was out and someone new was in. That turned out to be true and definitely made a difference the night before. Not this night however. Well, anyway this night started out with a pretty cool first set. Bertha was great and I had never seen West L.A. Then the second set just seemed to get louder, and clearer and pre-drums was nice and smooth. If I remember, it seemed as Jerry did not want to leave the stage after He's gone, which is always a good thing. Well then the roof blew off the place and I do not think you can do any justice by explaining to people what the Lovelight-Stella-Lovelight was like. Unless you were there physically. I hate the expression "words can not explain." However I have to use it just this once. Stella Blue was the greatest song I had ever seen live by the Dead and Various other bands I have seen and even to this day is probably my favorite live experience I have ever witnessed.

The Jam before Drums contains a Matilda Jam. It's possible 3/21 in Richfield is the only time this theme is played before the song's first official appearance at Deer Creek in July.
