Dave's Picks Volume 8: Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA 11/30/80 - SOLD OUT
This product is officially sold out.
This item is now available for PRE-ORDER ONLY. Item is estimated to ship November 1, 2013.
It's our last release of the 2013 Dave's Picks series and this next one's a fox, literally. We're making our first foray into the 80s (don't expect it to be the last!) with the complete show from 11/30/80, Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA. Fans of "The Fox" often debate the merits of this highly-esteemed performance, as in they find it hard to narrow down their favorite bits since this night is replete with many. From a spirited opener with an era-defining rendition of "Deal" to a soaring and powerful second set featuring one of the best ever versions of "Scarlet>Fire," there's no doubt the band was on their game and sound man Dan Healy was too. As the liners put it, "fast or slow, Jerry or Bob, routine or rare: they nail them all." Multiple listens have been said to yield un-ending revelations (even auras!), you'll just have to tune in to see where you land on the spectrum. Wherever this exceptional show takes you, it all adds up to over 3 hours of extremely fun listening. Hotlanta, indeed!
It goes without saying that this one will sell out in no time at all, so your best bet is to pre-order it now...

The 30 days of Dead were sweet as well!!!!!
Here's a theory. It has a bit of added energy thanks to the matrix. One feels like one is there. The set list is not dull. The first "disc" is stellar all the way through, how many times can you truly say that? The "jams" are meandery and delicious--all the things most of us like about the Dead, especially Playin I've always loved "Benny and the Jets" by Elton John. To my knowledge, I only know the live version. There is the ideosyncratic "whistle" toward the beginning. This whole show feels like that particular moment. Intimate, aged, warm, and with elements of true virtuosity that one doesn't always hear. I agree, it's a new model for future releases and a strong argument for more from the early half of the 80s. Go DEAD! One heck of a resilient band.

Living down under I worry every time something ships. Will it get here? Maybe a few more days? So far everything has arrived. However I would be willing to pay for faster International shipping. That said….
Summer of 87 I asked my sister and brother-in-law "Whats the Grateful Dead sound like?" The shoved Dead Set into the tape player and I loved it! (still my fav Dead album)
Jump ahead to April 11 1988 and I'm driving up to Toledo Ohio and getting on a bus with a couple of local Dj's my sis, brother-in-law and several other Heads on the way to Detroit. Joe Louis Arena, Cobo Hall. My first show.
DaP 8 Reminds me of being 16 years old listening to Dead Set along the river throwing a frisbee with my Sis and b-in-law. I love…. Love this release!!! Keep em coming. (I have enjoyed every release but this is my fav) Thanks Dave and everyone else involved!
Dr Rhino has straightened things out for me.
I just dont have any patience...but for good reason. This show is just amazing. I gotta say, it seems like Brent played with a lot more balls in his earlier days. I like all the synth stuff he does. Nick mentions in the liner notes that Brents jam in the lead in to The Wheel is "controversial" but its coming out of space! Thats a better time, than probably any, to be more experimental...and he changes right when the verse starts. Anyway. I love it all, all the crowd noise and talking just under the surface. It really has a feeling of what its like being there (although I never was) the matrix effect is really nice.
This has GOT to be the best version of THE WHEEL I've ever heard. The way it comes out of SPACE is really breath taking. In fact after Drums and Space the whole band are really on top form right up to the end of the show. Just amazing
it sounds like the good Dr. has things covered, but if anyone's still having issues, send me a PM and we'll get on it. Thanks! (And enjoy the tunes...)
Got the DP8 in the mail yesterday and it was a numbered edition! Thank goodness! A big shoot out to Dr. Rhino to working everything out for me.
::knocks on wood:: no shipping issues in 2014!!
feel free to send me a PM with the details and I'll see what's up.
I just got Vol 8 in the mail yesterday...of course, Im still waiting on the one from dead.net. The one I got came from ebay...i just couldn't wait any longer!
Oh, got it. Good luck!
Howdy, just a clarifying item on the shipping. I was not expecting it to be UPS next day, but that is what Dr. Rhino stated in the email back to me. If it stated standard shipping, I would be cool with that too.
Keep you posted on the progress with the missing shipment. Keeping my fingers crossed!!
I wouldn't expect your replacement to be shipped overnight; the cost of that would be outrageous. With the holiday and no Saturday UPS delivery, I would expect it mid week next week. Consider yourself very, very fortunate to be getting a numbered copy. Many here will not.
Dude, definitely go for the Warlocks box; it is worth every penny!
I have been an active reader of all of the delivery issues plaguing the posters on here - not only with DP8 but with other CDs too. I had always knocked on wood that the delivery bug had never bit me and I have ordered almost every release from dead.net. Well, it finally got me with DP8. After returning home for the holidays, I was hoping to see my DP8 package, but it was not at my parent's house. My mom looked up the order and forwarded me the tracking number. Typed it into UPS and bam...invalid shipping number. Typed it in again....bam...same result. After contacting customer service, they responded promptly requesting I contact Dr. Rhino. Dr. Rhino was very prompt and stated they had found a numbered CD in the warehouse and was sending it UPS next day. That was November 27. Granted the 28th was Thanksgiving, I still do not have the package. I contacted Dr. Rhino for a tracking number and no response...........
I am all for forgiving an initial shipping error, but not doing what you say you would do to make-up for it is very disappointing.
your issue is not unique unfortunately ,Its just horrible talking to the people at customer service, they have no idea what the product they are servicing is in most cases. its almost impossible to speak to anyone there who really cares. I think if some of you all agree that this issue with customer service should be addressed by the Grateful Dead Organization. It used to be you were calling the other side of the globe, sure did changed it , but its not any better honestly. I have had nothing but a headache dealing with them almost every time.
your best bet here is to keep your printed invoice, otherwise you stand no chance at all. the gal i spoke with last regarding the subscription had no idea what Daves' pick was. she told me its sold out , having a subscription does not Guarantee you getting the product in the mail. For the price they charge , you think they may choose UPS or something with better tracking than USPost office tracking is a joke because when they deliver yours to the wrong house the tracking still said Delivered, I was lucky to have seen the mail-person , the package was still in his bag it was scanned DELIVERED, if I didn't see the package hanging in his bag , forget it ....
I took your advice, matchewy, and just sent a politely disgruntled email to dead.net customer service and CC'd Dr. Rhino. Last time I spoke to Dead.net CS they told me that my replacement shipment should ship by the end of November. Today is the last day of the month & not only do I not have DP8, but I don't have a new order # or shipment tracking #. Praying that the folks who get the email take care of things.
Also, I finally saw your PM regarding 30 Days 2010 edition, and YES, I am still interested. Thanks.
PS - earlier someone mentioned listening to Download Series #7 (9/30/80), as it is in the same era as DP8. DS7 is one that I listened to once a while back & moved on, but listening to it again now I'm really enjoying it. I think overall I prefer the 1970-1975 setlists, but I really dig the sound of Mydland. Perhaps I should look into "Formerly the Warlocks" for the best of both worlds?
I have heard from customer service and now Dr. Rhino. He will ship a non-numbered replacement along with a coupon code for dead.net, acknowledging that a non-numbered copy isn't quite equal to a numbered one.
Although it took a second unhappy email to customer service, with Dr. Rhino CC'd, I am satisfied with the way this is resolved. I understand that a numbered copy is impossible at this point due to the item being sold out. THIS is good customer service and the way an issue like this should be handled.
Thank you to dead.net customer service and Dr. Rhino for working it out. I now feel confident that if there is any trouble with my 2014 subscription shipments, it will get worked out to the best of TPTB's ability.
I said it before and I will say again, I love DaP8; it is a great show, a great mastering job, and a great package. I look forward to the Montana DaP9 release, and I can't wait to see what else is in store for 2014, and 2015 for that matter.
Emailed customer service responding to their resolution, and they seem to be more willing to find a better solution. High hopes for us all.
BTW, check your PM about your quest for 30 Days 2010. Evidently, there is no notification system for receiving PM's.
fourwindsblow, regarding your educated suspicion that one of the tracks on the 16-track recording during the Europe '72 tour was an audience mike: You are correct on that one. I have had a GREAT sounding multi-track recording of the '72 Rotterdam show for many years. And hear is what is so cool and weird about the beginning of that tape:
For the first 20-30 seconds of the song your hear ONLY the audience mike. It sounds like it is coming from the back of the hall (or maybe the recording board in the center of the hall). Then you hear another instrument come in for 20 seconds with the audience track. Then ANOTHER instrument with the other two tracks, lasting for about 20 seconds. And then ANOTHER track, same thing done again. Until you have all the vocal and instruments together and suddenly the recording is full multi-track spectrum POWAH at full volume! It's really a cool-sounding tape for that reason.
So in answer to your educated guess, that is an affirmative yes to an audience mike on the Europe '72 recordings.
Matchewy - that doesn't sound good at all. When I've spoken to CS I specifically expressed my concern about getting a replacement, as this is a limited edition release that sold out within 48 hours of going on sale. In three separate phone calls I was assured that they *would* be able to get a replacement shipment to me. I still haven't got DP8 or the shipping confirmation email for the replacement shipment that they told me I'd get. Last communication with Dead.net was the evening of November 16th when they told me that it would ship by the end of the month.
Given all that has happened, and all that I'm hearing about with your situation and a few others, I'm not holding my breath. This is the first thing I've ever purchased from Dead.net, and I'm starting to wonder if I should have just payed someone $60 for the show on Amazon.
Also wondering if this is going to be a repeat issue, since I paid for a 2014 subscription.
If they can't (or won't) make good on my Dave Pick's 8 purchase, I could be satisfied with some high quality 320mbps MP3 files of the show, or a letter from Rhino's legal department absolving me of any civil/criminal liability for downloading the copyrighted material we refer to as "Dave Pick's volume 8" via p2p/bittorrent software. As much as I would really like to have the physical discs, ultimately, it's about the music.
There's been a lot of grumbling about Dave's Picks Vol. 8 not being up to snuff because it's supposedly not such a great 1980s show. In fact, a friend of mine that I always go to Furthur with thinks it's not a great show, and he is a bigger Head than I am, and I got bit by the Grateful bug pretty bad having caught the tail end of Jerry's greatness many, many times from '89 to '93. Well, you know, this Atlanta Show is what it is, but I submit to you the following comment on Dave's Picks Vol. 8 without reservation:
The totally on fire, cooking and rocking Deal that ends the first set is alone worth the price of the three discs. OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but only a bit. Also, the Scarlet>Fire is an awesome open to Set 2. And this show SOUNDS great, as do all of the other Dave's Picks in the 2013 subscription.
Anyway, I didn't bother with Dave's 2012 because that wasn't too far from the time I dropped major bucks on the Europe '72 suitcase of shows, and I was like, I'm not going to buy any new stuff from Dead.net for awhile. Then I broke down at the end of 2012 and did the Dave's subscription, just to do it, and I have to say that all the shows this year were really, really good choices, so I'm doing 2014. I think this series is very different from Dick's Picks, but in a good way. And it's definitely better than the Road Trips series which was mostly multi-night highlights (not that there is anything wrong with that).
Well, I finally heard back from customer service regarding my damaged DaP8, and I was told they cannot send a replacement since there is no stock left. After being sent a non-numbered replacement for my damaged Vol. 6, one thing is obvious: dead.net and Rhino have absolutely no game plan concerning how to deal with lost shipments, damaged shipments, etc.
I have purchased everything from GD, always preorder, have all the limited editions, bonus discs, etc. I ordered a 2014 subscription as soon as it was available. I am pretty disappointed that I get this news after another preorder (Ever tried to cancel a preorder with this camp? Ha!) Seeing that there is no game plan, and Rhino is having a difficult time getting it right, I am not sure I would have subscribed this time. Their shipping containers are sub par, customer service is a rag tag bunch of incompetence (Shipping to wrong addresses after customers verified correct address after customer service sends out emails confirming addresses?! C'mon!) I understand limited product and all, but that means Rhino and dead.net have upped the stakes on their ability to deliver.
I feel like a real fool after posting on here to reassure those who received nothing this time around. I really hope those whose shipments were lost do get taken care of.
Has arrived, sound is great thank you very much.
Bummer. See that makes no sense! But faster shipping would be cool. It's hard waiting on the Post.
I'm in Pa. USA and I'm still waiting so consider yourself lucky.
The hardest part living down under is waiting for my Dead cd's to arrive. You know I'd be willing to pony up some extra cash for quicker shipping on the subscription. But with that said everyone has arrived and I'm sure will continue to. Time to cook dinner for the family and listen!!
trouble ahead, the suspect in red
That's actually a good question. He is good about resolving damage, but I'm not sure about lost shipments. Either way, I think your plan is sound; harass customer service, then contact Dr. Rhino at the end of the month if you don't get anywhere.
AA- first off, LOVE the mugshot! Next, keep at customer service, call them every day! I have had several issues recently, thankfully always resolved, but I had to make a pest of myself to get any results. Be polite, but be FIRM! I had a problem with the DP8 skipping during the UJB encore (ouch), called everyday for a week, just received a replacement disc 3, so be persistant, trust me, you don't want go much longer without hearing this show!!! Peace to all.
So DP 8 has made it to northern Germany and the Netherlands but not to my home in upstate NY. You're harshing my mellow, Dead net customer service.
LOL of the day.... The dude even has a pseudo-JG haircut:
"Over the course of a few days last week, police in Upper Darby, Pa., arrested four men who were allegedly selling drugs outside of a theater where former Grateful Dead founding member Phil Lesh and his band were performing.
Wednesday night’s bust?
It featured a trio that included 49-year-old Michael Weiss of Bensalem, Pa., who cops say was found with suspected marijuana and more than 100 cartridges of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Police also collected 123 spent cartridges, suggesting that someone had been operating a considerable business selling the illegal gas."
The mug shot is priceless. Funny, and sad at the same time.
Thanks matchewy. I might need to use that. Is Dr. Rhino pretty much a general customer service department, or is it issue specific? I guess what I mean is that previous references I've heard about folks dealing with Dr. Rhino usually revolves around issues with damaged discs, packaging, etc.
If I've not heard anything back from Dead.net customer service by the end of the month, I think I'll be contacting them.
For those with customer service problems with DaP 8...
mpace, I'm sure you have this one too, but just in case: I really like the Download Series 7 (Sep 3-4 1980). Black Peter, Althea, really unusual Other One, Supplication Jam, Brokedown encore... One of my favorites from that series...
Totally unrelated, but I enjoyed stumbling on this interview with JP Barlow, on Internet and privacy issues. Favorite quote: "If this were a movie, the bad guy would be the country with the killer flying robots..."
Thanks for the input! - a not so solid performance that has some highlights would be fine, but any pitch or speed issues would drive me nuts - reminds me of when we would always have to guess when the batteries were going dead in the walkman and the tape slowing hahaha
I have the GTN and its great (some favorites on that one and up there with the best versions I have heard are the Jack Straw, Stranger, Salior>Saint, Althea, High Time, and event the Brent tunes are good)- I think I will hold off and save up for Terrapin Limited or Warlocks for some good Brent, not the same as 1980 but it will do nicely- Really into the Brent era recently and hope next years box is a '79 or early '80s set. With that said if we got an early '73 box with a Utica>Nassua>Boston run well that would be killer.
I honestly don't notice the speed issue, but I just don't think the performance is on the same level as Dave's 8. As I noted further below, they're in the ZONE on 11/30--where the Road Trip is just ok by comparison. Fun and all, decent Grateful Dead Music, they're not off, by and large.... But not transcendent, either. Some highlights are "Peggy-O" and the middle of disc 2: Other One -> drums -> space -> Wharf Rat. But the Round & Round-> Johnny B. after that sequence sounds pedestrian next to Dick's 8. For spring '80, I'd seek out Go to Nassau over the RT. Just my opinion, though.
Personally, I couldn't even make it through the whole thing once. Not only is it very weird hearing every song in a different key than you're used to, but it's slow as well...
Hey Everyone- looking for input. Really tempted to get the 1980 road trip after hearing this show. Are the sound/pitch issues with this pick that bad?
Loud!! The wife and kid are out. This is the first time I am able to crank DaP 8 on my home system. And I mean really, really loud. Sounds freakin' incredible. Loving the matrix. Awesome presentation all around. Cheers!
Dead.net customer service IS clueless. However, Dr. Rhino gets stuff done. I believe in many cases, after much wasted time, our problems finally get placed on Dr. Rhino's desk, and then he resolves them quickly, in my experience.
The interesting thing about the current problem is the promise of replacements with a sold-out limited product. We've been on this ride before (recall vol. 3, Dead Letter Office edition). But, I had a damaged case for Vol. 6, and my replacement was an unnumbered copy, which I feel did not qualify as a replacement. I do acknowledge that I was in the minority of customers with Vol. 6 as I did not read about many problems on the boards. But, there seems to be growing issues with this latest edition, and I have a damaged case once again. It will be interesting to see what "replacement" we end up with this time. I suppose it depends on the numbers.
Ordered The Family Dog CD and the Oddities CD at the same time. Was really stoked when the key to the larger mailbox arrived in the smaller mailbox. Opened the door and, lo and behold...the package seemed kinda thin. Oddities only. No Family Dog. The packaging slip said both were shipped. Called Deadnet the next day. They assured me the replacement was on it's way. That was Tuesday. It is now Saturday and no email confirmation of shipment. We'll see. I've had good luck with the Dead store so far...until now. BTW...Hey Little One on Oddities is pretty sweet. Here's to the cracking open of DaP 8 AA...you will enjoy it my friend.
I feel your pain. I talked to customer service yesterday and found out some interesting things. First, my tracking # never worked even after pasting to USPS tracking site. Upon looking up the name and address to my order # a Italian name and address came up.
The supervisor at customer service assured me they would send a replacement after working w/ backstock. They refunded my shipping but If I get this release it will probably be next month.
I have been easing the pain by downloading some tasty shows off the web.
Hope you get yours soon brother,
Positive Vibrations/let it shine, let it shine!!
Waiting for stock? The customer service folks really are clueless. They have given me bad information many times. They are slack, really weak. Hope you get it soon man.
Arrived in Philadelphia today.
Now they say that the status of my order for Dave's Picks 8 is that they are "waiting for stock" - which may take a couple weeks & they expect it to ship (hopefully) by the end of the month.
Huge thanks to Chris Grand for hooking me up with his extra copy. You rock, man! I heard this matrix on a tiny boombox at work for the first time. Even on that crummy little thing, I could tell what was there. Very fine work done here from all involved. The liner notes about taper history was really cool, some of the best notes in this series so far. I don't care what you release, everything is great, 70s or 80s...blah! Great to be part of this...
I was so elated when it was announced that the Vol 8 would be from the Brent era. My only knock is that there are no real Brent lead vocals. Nix, nada. You do here the keyboards but you even have to really listen to hear his background vocals. Just sayin
great article here, with historical background
if you havent ordered, do so
