"The rock music group Grateful Dead is scheduled to perform at a 'potluck picnic' Sunday, sponsored by the Springfield Creamery." Eugene Register-Guard

A "rock picnic." The Field Trip. Kesey's Creamery. August 27, 1972. The Springfield Creamery Benefit. Call it what you will, the sun was beating down hard and bright on that fateful day in Veneta, Oregon when the Grateful Dead heeded Ken Kesey's call to help save the family Creamery. The 100-degree and rising temperatures did not deter the band who were still riding high from their adventures across the pond. It did not discourage filmmakers John Norris, Phil DeGuere, and Sam Field who gained entry into the Dead's tight-knit world with their promise to capture the culture and integrity of the scene. And it certainly didn't inhibit the estimated 20,000 Dead Heads who could not believe their, well, pot...luck.

In fact, this blistering day turned out to be a near-perfect little piece of the Grateful Dead experience and it is with great pleasure, that 41 years later we can present Sunshine Daydream to you the way it was meant to be seen and heard. As Prankster Ken Babbs puts it in the liner notes, this previously unreleased concert film "is a time capsule, a vessel full of exuberant free spirit as exhibited by the enraptured, edified, and satisfied concertgoers, a spirit that can still resound, that can still fill our hearts with joy, with compassion, with that sense and knowledge of our oneness, our open sharing and caring and the belief that the goodness inherent in all of us will continue to shine just as it did in Veneta, Oregon, in 1972. And will prevail." And prevail it does, with its pristine sound and beautiful visuals, the band transporting the audience to other-worldly planes with definitive versions of their beloved songs like "Bertha," "China>Rider," "Playing In The Band,""Greatest Story Ever Told,""Dark Star," and "Sing Me Back Home" and the Dead Heads in their wild and, quite literally, naked glory.

A exclusive, this "most requested" and "most revered" show is limited to 12,500 individually numbered copies on Blu-ray. Presented in an original tie-dye slipcase by Courtenay Pollock, the set also includes 40-page book with in-depth essays by David Lemieux, Sam Field, Johnny Dwork, Ken Babbs, and Nicholas G. Meriwether.

With out unwrapping, how do I tell the DVD and Blu-ray apart?

This is a real treat! I have been looking at the bootleg version for years. The clarity of the re mastered footage is superb. The audio sounds equally super having a deep, round, balanced sound that fills the whole room with warm pleasantries from the DEAD. Can't Wait To Get The Blue Ray & CDs.

re: Aspect ratio

Hey jcarrier - I believe Sunshine Daydream was filmed using 16mm cameras, which actually have an aspect ratio of 1.33 (4:3) same as a traditional television. However, if it were shot in Super 16mm then the aspect ratio of the negative would be 1.67 (5:3).

Aspect ratio

My guess is that both DVD and Blu-Ray formats will be 4:3 (not widescreen). The theatrical showing I saw in Evanston was definitely 4:3 which surprised me as it looked like the crew filming the show was using film cameras and not video. Most film is in a widescreen format. It didn't make sense to me, but there you go.

This Veneta show was mixed from a 16-track tape. It sounded awesome in the theater on Aug 1st! It sounded so dynamic and real!! I loved it!! I hope the CDs have that spatial character. The Dicks Picks CDs are from 2 track masters, so this will be a huge upgrade!
The documentary and concert movie were great!! I loved it!!
I love the comment about pole guy finally putting on shorts. That's so fukcin funny!! A few people and I were laughing at pole guy a lot during the movie. Jerry is really into a great solo and in the corner of the screen is pole guy dancing around. LOL...I don't own or watch the Grateful Dead videos but this one is different. Its a time capsule of something from the past that I wish existed right now. These filmmakers did a good job of capturing a real Dead concert. This was the epitome of a Grateful Dead concert in the early days: its in a rural area in Oregon, the merry pranksters are in attendance, everybody is on LSD including the sound and film crew (i'm assumed based on what I've read), people are dancing naked. This is bliss. I wanted every Dead show to be like the Veneta Show!!

that's a lot for the extra stuff

hmmm, $64 from deadnet including shipping charge

and only $30 from amazon (no shipping charge for "prime" members), but its a DVD rather than blu-ray and no booklet slip cover or bonus interviews

of course i jumped on the deadnet offering first day, but if i could cancel and order from amazon i probably would

but since i cant i guess i'll try to enjoy the extra stuff

but i cant help but feel a little played's picture

My first Dicks Pick was number Eleven (11 ) from 9/27/72 so when Sunshine Daydream came out I figure I might get this because its from a show one month prior to DP11. The past Dead DVDs I've purchased have been monumental Dead shows, The GD Movie ('74 final shows), and Closing Winterland, so I figure this set might be up there with those shows and from the reactions here from folks who saw it and commented here I figure this is a no brainer. But I don't ever watch the DVDs and only listen to the music, but I figure one day when I get this killer room to display this film it will be great!

Ponied up for this

I originally went to Amazon and placed a pre-order for the "regular" version of this. In all honesty, I don't care about the limited edition or the deluxe aspect of this, although they are a nice bonus. What really got me on this is that the cheaper Amazon version was listed as DVD and I didn't see a Blu-Ray option there (not to say there won't be one, but the initial leak didn't have one as far as I saw). If I'm going to buy physical media I'm going to opt for the best format I can and that my hardware at home supports. Could I have waited to see if a Blu-Ray option popped up on Amazon? Of course, but I don't mind spending an extra $20 to make sure I get what I want.

I heard a bit of this on Sirius XM today and I'm pretty pumped for the discs to show up on my doorstep!

it'll be mine - eventually

can't wait to get this on CD but don't really need video portion. i'd be all over it if there was a CD-only version and would even spring for the whole shootin' match if it was available by the anniversary of the show.

alas, they'll get my support down the road but i'll listen to the copy i've got come 8/27.

Looking forward to this!!

I got to catch this in Raleigh NC. We had a packed house here! I loved every second of it! Like most, I was glad pole dude found some shorts towards the end.

Anyways, thanks so much for this release and all the others. I just got my Dave's Picks 7, it sounds great! Can't wait to see what Dave has up his sleve for #8. Happy Jerry week to all, and remember, instead of complaining, be thankful for the abundance of music we have available to us! If you don't like something, don't buy it.

Who said free?

Just to make sure I reread my submission twice. Nope no word free in there. Also I knew you were going to claim I worked for Rhino or was (heaven's to bid) a CEO. Bill G used to get a lot of that. Now read slowly and you can even move your lips. I do not work for Rhino or any part of the entertainment industry. But if you had paid attention I do appreciate the great work Rhino has done for us old timers with their reissues. Am I a CEO or even a supervisor Hah my bosses would laugh heartily. What I am and have been for almost 40 years is a blue collar union man and damn proud of it. Just because I understand a business has to make money to stay in business doesn't mean I wear a suit. As far as the consumer having a choice, they do they can choose where to spend their hard earned money. But but I just want this and not that you say then start your own business you personally don't get to tell someone else what they have to make. That system finally crashed and burned 20+ years ago. That being said if a business makes wrong decisions they fail that is where consumer choice comes in. It happens in our economy all the time. Right choice business booms wrong choice oh well next idea. Maybe you should take economics 101 before you open you mouth.

Really excellent work; let those who've worked out how to live for free share their secret; for myself, I'm keeping the day job and buying the sets I want and can afford and passing on those I don't want (Spring 1990) or can't afford (May 1977). It's a beautiful legacy that is being managed in a concientious way; thumbs up to the band, DL2, Dick before him, Jeffrey, MaryE and, yes, Rhino.

Dude chill out. Virtually everyone on this site wants the whole show which the movie is not so you get both. 12,500 blue ray isn't a small amount let's see how long it takes to sell out. I swear I've never seen so many people whine about a company (Rhino) that has provided great products for years that wants to keep doing it (by guess how MAKING MONEY). You go work for free P.S. To everyone else sorry about the tone I am heartily sick and tired of people who think others shouldn't get a decent return on their hard work

Not a crowd by any means, but the theatre had great screen and sound. We drove about an hour to be able to see this at the only North Dakota screening, and it was well worth it. Have had the audio for this show for many years, it was very fine to see some of the knockout performances, including Dark Star>El Paso>Sing Me Back Home and China>Rider. Although occasionally lacking in completely professional film making, the shot of the faces of the crowd during Dark Star was priceless. The transition bridge on China>Rider really showed Bob dialed in as well.

I'm amazed that they got anything done even resembling a show with all of the chaos all around, but maybe it was because of the chaos all around!

Sunshine Daydream in a Louisville Theater!

I saw Sunshine Daydream at the Stonybrook 20 on S. Hurstbourne Parkway in Louisville, Kentucky last night. My earlier guess of 45 to 50 people in attendance was probably too high. There were probably only 30 to 35 people there.

I loved it! I only wish they would have shown the band more. I didn't really like the "trippy collage" filler they kept going to during the second half of the movie. They might have had to do this due to a lack of actually film footage during those portions of the show, but probably not. They probably just thought it was cool. And yes, there was too much focus on the naked hippies (The girl with the open sore/half open scab in the center of her back got too much screen time!). The sound was killer though! I really want the CD of this show and am about to order it right now.

I was so excited to see the Dead releasing a Blu-Ray...then I see they make you buy the 3-disc CD set if you want the Blu-Ra, NO EXCEPTIONS. WOW. At least its not about the $$$$......

After getting over being pissed,I realize I was being a bit narrow sighted..If it WAS all about the $,they probably wouldnt be only releasing a small number. Now im just confused...

It took me about 2 seconds to decide to order the Blu-Ray package. I'm thrilled. I have most of the previously circulated mixdowns and though at least a couple sound very good, nothing will top having a newly-mastered HDCD of the whole show plus the movie FINALLY!

Thanks to GDM for finally letting us hear this show in its 16 track glory! I'd long heard that like Egypt, Jerry would never authorize this show for release because the instruments were out of tune (excessive heat on this show, no piano tuner for Egypt). Warts and all, this is still one of my favorite shows of all time.

this is a show of legend I would love to see. I was thinking on the way to the movie that I've heard David Lemieux talk about footage of shows but not enough to put out. Well what if you did some crazy 3D effects for filler? Like last night if you had blurry or chaotic footage you just match it with some space jam and it's "trippy & artsy"! Then there was the very weird but entertaining Monty Pythonesque animation.

What a TRIP!

Saw this last night and it was like getting in a time machine! Great way to celebrate Jerry's birthday. Was amazed at how young everyone looked! Sound quality was phenomenal and the video was surprisingly good. Great shots of Jerry in the zone. Will be getting it and watching it every year AT LEAST!

Literally tears of joy

Words can hardly express how freaking special that was, thanks to everyone involved for making it happen.

Watching it, one second I was giggling like I just tabbed some fresh Owsley acid then suddenly tears of joy would well in my eyes; luckily, I didn't need to worry that the cat sitting next to me would think I was losing my mind... which is what it probably looked like. (Even though far from losing my mind I was indeed finding that part of myself that embraced this spirit, this music, this culture so universally loving)

The theatre in Northgate, Seattle, was sold completely out. People danced in the aisles. At one point, during that thirty minute Dark Star, I had the profound realization that I was actually in a theatre full of heads watching a thirty minute Dark Star and thinking "if someone ever asked me back in the day if I would see myself one day sitting in a dark theatre and enjoying the psychedelic roller coaster ride that is a big wampus Dark Star rolling out over thirty minutes what I would've said - "wouldn't that be a trip?"

Everyone have an awesome Jerry week!

Creamery skit

Saw this last night and thought it was wonderful. One thing, though - my copy has a skit at the very beginning where Babbs plays a banker or someone similar who had been extending credit to the creamery but now wants payments be made COD. Why did this get cut? Doesn't matter, really - it's a truly great time capsule and fantastic performance.

Saw the movie last night and was blown away. The team did such a great job with everything. I loved the bouncing into the acid tests and back to the show. Very well done.

The sound quality at the theater I saw it in was excellent as well.

Cant wait to see what you have instore for next year.

Really Well Done !

Hey Now !

Saw the movie last night - What a Great Job!
Thanks alot, much better than my grainy VHS copy-
although some of the extra stuff on that was
pretty cool as well

Can the Crew do this kind of a restoration on
Las Vegas 5-30-1992 , Lightning Day ?

I could write a detailed essay about that day,
and how all our old friends came back to visit,
and throw lightning bolts with Thunderous Booms
timed to the Second set - "I need a Miracle Every Day,
da da ,de da BOOM, dat de dat de da, de da de da BOOM ,
dat de dat de da...with the Lightning flashes surrounding the stadium~

Then, as the show was ending , the storm did as well,
the cloud over the stadium rolled halfway back, so that, if you looked up,
half the sky was blue, and the underside of the clouds were illuminated
reddish pink by the setting sun over behind the stadium, creating a Stealy
over the top of the stadium for "Knocking on Heaven's Door".

After the show people just walked around hugging each other,
telling each other that it was Real, and that they Really Saw That !

Peace and Aloha ~
