Dave's Picks 2018 Subscription

Welcome to the 7th year of the Dave's Picks series, as we head into 2018 more excited than ever about where this series is, and where it's going. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported the series since its inception in 2012; and to those who are new to it, we welcome you. There's plenty of room on the bus. The anticipation we feel every time we select, and later announce, each and every Pick is equal, or even greater, than this guy's excitement at seeing a train. As we head into and past our 25th release in the series, we feel a great sense of forward momentum, and we aim to keep that going in the coming years. How do we top a release like the upcoming Vol. 25, which as you've likely heard is the classic, much-requested, spectacular 11/6/77 Binghamton, NY show? With the show we're thinking about for Vol. 26, that's how! Really, we aim to equal, or top, every release by heading to great performances that you or may not have previously heard, but never in the quality Jeffrey Norman is able to produce. We've got our eyes and ears on several shows for possible upcoming Dave's Picks releases that are going to make 2018 the best year yet in the series, and that's how we honestly feel. Thanks again for subscribing. We keep doing what we do because you keep digging it. Your support and feedback is what keeps making us scream like we've just seen the train of our dreams...

David Lemieux
October 2017

Because the demand for these limited, numbered releases is so high, we've decided to bump the 2018 Dave's Picks production run to 18,000 of each of the four releases. While this means there will be more to go around, the best advice we have to give is... subscribe. When these releases go up for sale a la carte, they sell out within hours. Hours. No hyperbole here. The only way to avoid disappointment and be guaranteed all four Dave's Picks in 2018 is to subscribe.

In addition to the four CD releases in 2018, totaling 12 CDs, you’ll also get the subscription-exclusive bonus disc, which has proven to be one of the most highly sought after collectables we’ve ever released and free domestic shipping. Subscriber bonus discs will not be released outside of this offer.

Yea.. thanks My Time.. That ruins my plans for the weekend, I was just getting comfy in my chair and had all my encyclopedias and almanacs out...

Great guess and proved me wrong. I thought there was no way someone was going to get this on the first day.

Oh Man

Just came on to enter my second guess and see I have already killed off the fun by guessing correctly the first time.

William and Mary 9/11/1973 and Utica 3/22/73 also fit the bill, with the former even including a horny Weather Report Sweet.

Happy Holidays everyone. We still have the DaP26 guessing game too at least.

Worrisome

While I didn't pick the correct show, it somewhat worrisome that I was on bolo's wavelength about the clue's correct interpretation...

We have a winner!

Didn't get around to looking at guesses until just now. This is my busiest time of year - had a long elf training session last night. Elves and egg nog - bad combo!

The first (and ONLY) person to guess correctly is...drum roll please...oh, thanks, Billy. Hey, Mickey joining in on The Beast - sweet! Now he's moving over to The Beam. Here comes Olatunji playing a bandir...good to see you, Baba! This may take a while. Someone just wheeled Kesey's Thunder Machine onto the stage.

OK, enough with that. Congrats to Mytime, who posted the winning entry at 11:32 last night. The show is 5/6/78 - University of Vermont. First set opener - Sugaree; second set closer - Sugar Magnolia. The next clue would have included a rather obscure reference to the interesting date (5678), but obviously not needed now.

Mytime, send me your address. I'll pack up your goodies post-haste.

Thanks for playing, folks. By the way, pretty impressed to see numerous entries posted at precisely 6:00 PM.

And, no, this has nothing to do with DaP 26 as some have surmised.

Cheers!

10-15-76 works for me

I definitely think this is the kind of show that could pull people (like me) off the fence to subscribe. I was going to chime in with my usual pick of late 10-16-74, or 12/18/73, both excellent and somewhat forgotten after finishing out of the money (i.e. unpicked) years ago.

How sweet it is

6-23-74. Pure sugar and sweetness! Jackie Gleason did his show from there years after the "Honeymooners" and would always say "how sweet it is"!

RE: Sweet

Agreed on 12/28/78 and 6/21/80. The former was my guess yesterday.. the latter my guess today. Both have a candyman in the middle as well.

I've always liked 6/20/80 and 6/21/80, the Alaska shows. Both nights are a real easy listen to me. 6/20 is one of the last cassettes I still have, its in the glove box of my kids jetta.

Sweet

Hershey seems too easy. Maybe a show that starts with Sugaree and ends with Sugar Magnolia. Maybe even has a Candyman somewhere in it.

Like 6/21/80, which has all those, plus the second encore is Brokedown. What's sweeter than that? Or 12/28/78, which was the aptly named Golden Hall.

That's a nice guess seamus95 and it seems to fit the clues. It has Might as Well to open the show, and a sweet song in both the 1st and 2nd sets. I would be real happy to see that released and complete finally. Interestingly there's no encore for this show...

Ho, Ho, Ho. Guess That Show!!

Some fun for those mired in pre-DaP announcement limbo.

 Entries must include date and venue of concert.

 Contest starts at exactly 6 PM Pacific time today. Entries received earlier than that don’t count.

 One guess per screen name per day via PM to me only, and your screen name must have been created prior to 12/14/2017. Duplicate entries will be ignored.

 Entries will be reviewed in the order they appear in my inbox.

 The first person to correctly solve the riddle will receive a selection of Dead-related goodies (legal in most states). Here’s a tease - one of the items will be a laminate from Jerry’s memorial in Golden Gate Park. Value: priceless!

OK, here goes:

Yes..

I had a lengthy reply to the device post.. but by the time I posted it.. there was Bolo's post of a puzzle and prize for the winner. Posted a couple hours before I hit send on my reply.

I heard from a reliable source that the prize is a lakefront property on Lake Como. So I recursively edited my wonky reply.

My guess is we are all better off for this.

@DeadBoss and others -- headphone options??

Being audio -spec-ignorant and having taken a closer look at the Plenue d I am considering which headphones within a price range would be a good match?

The best pair I have are Sony Sony MDR-NC60, and a few other decent lesser pairs.

The ibasso dx 90 seems like the the best sound for my modest budget and despite the short battery life I could get a spare battery and just slip open the back and put in the spare.

With Plenue 1 I would need to unscrew the back -- impracticable on the go.

The Plenue D has a much longer battery charge life and is a lot cheaper than the ibasso dx 90 so that may be the one for me. To the readers: My creative zen mp3 bought in 2005 went kaput so I want a hi res upgrade. But, but, but, being not audio-spec-tech-savy my head wants to explode going back and forth reading, comparing and contrasting. . .. Adrift at sea. . .. Greek to me . ... Tom hanks on a raft screaming Wilson! Wilson! Wilson!.

Good grief Charlie Brown!

The Plenue D might be good enough considering I was using a 2005 creative zen mp3 with cheap headphones.

Anyhow what on ear or over ear headphone would be a good match for the Plenue D? Price range $100 - $200??

Does anyone think that the Sony MDR-NC60 are suitable???

Thanks everyone.

When all the good sounding recordings have been Normanized and released?

Yeah Jim. I’ve been neglecting my torrent collection. Need to show it some love soon.

When I Google a random date during the Dead's run, 99% of the time the first entry is that day's concert on the arvhive.

As it should be.

Portables

Whatever your brand, I was at Sam’s Club tonight and San Disk 128 GB micro SDXC cards were on sale for $30. So I grabbed another, will eventually need it as I slowly make ALAC playlists of shows.
My collection of commercial GD CD’s take 2 micro SDXC cards in ALAC format, 1965-76 and 77-95, with some room to spare to fit a few more releases. But now it’s time to start putting the torrent shows on cards.

Portable audio - extensible indexing

In 2012 I gave up on trying to find a non Apple solution. I loved replaceable batteries and swapping content in/out with portable media storage. However, at some point Sandisk (my device maker) stopped integrating the music directory across the device and the SD card. Has that changed? I made peace with iTunes, and the $15 family subscription is great. I curate my Dead and other obscure non-commercial stash, and overall iCloud has been pretty damned good. Music is not really a big hassle when it comes to upgrading to new phones. 128GB+ phones are great, I could not live without mine.

Thank you! I am taking a much loser look at Cowon which I knew nothing about. In fact I am out of my depth with this decision -- its not all Greek to me but close -- hence I turn to my favorite internet site from my favorite band. This is a great place.

Personal Audio Devices.

Just read the few postings regarding the above and all i have to say is...Cowon.

I have 3 of their devices...the Plenue 1(P1), the Plenue D and an older Iaudio 10...there is no other brand out there that comes close...Sony look good but like the majority of their products, lack a decent lifespan. My Iaudio 10 is still going strong after 6 years and no degradation in battery life either. My Plenue D has stood up to the hype and given me around 95 hours of listening pleasure from a single charge too...no bullshit whatsoever with this brand.

The only other brand i'd look to for a personal music player is Astel & Kearn...a friend just bought one and it is on a par with the Cowon kit.

Thanks everyone and I am looking into Cowon.

Thanks to all for your advice. According to the reviews the IBasso dx 90 does have a self-replaceable battery and the reviews recommend a genuine samsung s3 for the job. The short battery life but the ability to carry a spare gives the edge to the dx 90 over the dx80 plus perhaps better sound.

The sony nw a37hn is still intriguing with Hi Res playing ability and 45 hour battery life(mp3) and somewhat less when playing flac. Yet the dx90 might have better sound than this sony w/64gb internal(only 8gb on dx90) sony takes a micro up to 128mb(some say more than that).

To any one who is reading would you go for the ibasso dx 90 or the sony nw a37hn??? Thanks all.

There are shops where the comparable prices on both models are close to the same.

I regret not going bigger for my high def player. Sounds great, but he software is C+. Still.. I had $200 left after the price differential which ='s a lot of edibles. :D

deadegad,

I just got the Cowon Plenue D and it sounds redonkulously good. Supposedly has a 100 hour battery life, but I haven't tested that yet. The interface/touchscreen of Cowon isn't exactly the most intuitive on the planet, but the sound is gorgeous, so I don't care. I have another Cowon that has lasted over 9 years with no troubles, so I can vouch for the durability as well. (the old one wasn't gapless and couldn't take SD cards so when I saw a deal for 190 on amazon, I took the plunge.)

Happy hunting!

Hi Res portable audio advice, please.

My Creative Zen mp3 bought in 2005 finally went kaput. Now I'm thinking of getting a Hi Res Flac/Wav player.

I am, however, not tech savvy enough to make an informed decision so I turn to this place which I love so much.

Here are a few models that I'm considering:

Sony NW A37NH
Sony NW A35
ibasso DX90
ibasso dx80

over at the Daves 24 thread Icecrmkid and Direwulf have been helpful and thanks again guys.
