Dave's Picks 2018 Subscription - No Longer Available

Welcome to the 7th year of the Dave's Picks series, as we head into 2018 more excited than ever about where this series is, and where it's going. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported the series since its inception in 2012; and to those who are new to it, we welcome you. There's plenty of room on the bus. The anticipation we feel every time we select, and later announce, each and every Pick is equal, or even greater, than this guy's excitement at seeing a train. As we head into and past our 25th release in the series, we feel a great sense of forward momentum, and we aim to keep that going in the coming years. How do we top a release like the upcoming Vol. 25, which as you've likely heard is the classic, much-requested, spectacular 11/6/77 Binghamton, NY show? With the show we're thinking about for Vol. 26, that's how! Really, we aim to equal, or top, every release by heading to great performances that you or may not have previously heard, but never in the quality Jeffrey Norman is able to produce. We've got our eyes and ears on several shows for possible upcoming Dave's Picks releases that are going to make 2018 the best year yet in the series, and that's how we honestly feel. Thanks again for subscribing. We keep doing what we do because you keep digging it. Your support and feedback is what keeps making us scream like we've just seen the train of our dreams...

Because the demand for these limited, numbered releases is so high, we've decided to bump the 2018 Dave's Picks production run to 18,000 of each of the four releases. The only way to avoid disappointment and be guaranteed all four Dave's Picks in 2018 is to subscribe.

In addition to the four CD releases in 2018, totaling 12 CDs, you’ll also get the subscription-exclusive bonus disc, which has proven to be one of the most highly sought after collectables we’ve ever released and free domestic shipping. Apparently that is what they are calling this recent storm in here in NYC. Just finished shoveling after a rather long subway ride back home to Brooklyn.

Listening to the reissue LP of Aoxomoxoa. I believe it’s a remix of sorts cause it sounds way different, even more out there from my old cassette copy. Mountains of the moon making me feel really relaxed. Been a while since I checked in here. Hope everyone, especially those suffering through this east coast cold spell are all doing well. Glad to see you are into the black hole stuff. I find that stuff fascinating. As part of my side studies, I am working on a better understanding of the role of black holes and the new research on the prevalence of binary solar systems. I for one believe that all systems are binary. OK enough of that. I do like to dabble in some science, some mathematics/numbers, and some language/communication. Although I suck at all three, but find it fascinating learning. OK I am too high...stay away Jeff S.

Just cleaning up some things:

Jim: Regarding 1987-12-27. I really enjoyed the 27th and 28th. The 30th show was good, actually well played, but they seemed to have PA problems. I remember thinking they were setting up broadcast equipment for the 31st national pay per view. So when we walked in, there was added the two side screens to see what was being broadcast, group and effects. The visual effects were actually very good and intense for it being this early. The effects during the drums/space on the 31st are scary good top notch. So on the 30th, they were having PA drop outs which were not there the 27, 28, 31. I assume it is from testing the full production. When I listen to a board of the 30th, it is pretty good. 31st was very good, not close to the best show I saw. I do remember the huge smile on Jer's face as he walked out for Bertha. Great big smile, and a huge waive to the audience. It was almost like he was saying, everything is worked out.

Snafu: from last week. Thanks for the info. on the book by Zappa's brother. Will have to track that down. Thanks, and yeah, Gail is the problem.

Sessions: from the state he is from. A complete and utter moron, not to offend, but most lawyers lack any wisdom at all. They are the true root to our national problems. Cant figure out why things suck, look under the rock for the low life lawyer. No offense to the good and honest lawyers. I know some come to this site, so no offense, but you know your competitors.

LoveMyGirl: great name! Hang in there. I was in the hospital this time last year, just coming out of a coma. I mean I was sick unto death, as they say. It is amazing what the body can do, how it can heal. I am still recuperating but have the best parts of life have come back. Partying, music, driving, independence and occasionally chasing a floozy. Not sure I should explain that here. Another poster here and I have been having some offline emails. He read me post here about missing the May 77 box here, and was wondering if any had an extra. He let me have it for the same price but with the extra $10 for shipping. Great guy. He was going through Rehab and going to shows and visiting the Wharf Rats. I wrote to him about the amount of opioids I was given, pills and injectables. I found it easy to come off of them pretty fast as I want to save the china white for when I get really sick. The main thing is, they really do make you completely backed up. I mean horribly bad. Hate to bring that up, but I wonder how some people can take them so easily. I figured out a lot of the homeless that use basically do not eat. Cannot for the life of me figure out how Jery used and gained all that wait. He must have had some miserable days to go with the buzz. Oh well. Get well, we are all rooting for You!!!

The other interesting timing was on Tuesday when the Rep. from Utah finally decided to step down. A week earleir I read that he has a very good friend that was one that experienced epileptic seizures that were recently 'cured' or made manageable by the miricle of CBD... so he became a Medical M surporter for Utah! I week later he rides off into the sunset after 40 years of being Utah's Jeff Sessions... Go figure

Please feel free to fact check me if I'm wrong, (which I dont mind!) but that's what I just read this week.

Ok... dipping back to E72 for my car ride home from work today... need to distract myself from my own teeth chattering

that's just it, if everyone who voted in 2008 and 2012 voted in 2016, this would not be happening. Don't not vote, I know, it only encourages them but if we don't they will get away with anything they want. Like they are now.

I see it as the complete opposite - the book that was released is the smoke screen to cover the other things that are being done - change in states rights (legal pot), desire to change voting standards from local to national, last minute appointing of replacement federal prosecutor - the one that represents NY where trump and kushner business is located is Rudy's law partner, the one personally interviewed by the prez. Was a loyalty test / pledge invoked???

scary times...

loved your comment stolzfus, cold dead deadhead hand. If the current powers that be have their way, we will be right back in 1984, both in time (just say no, or else) and corresponding with the novel of the same title (Orwell). With thousands going to jail for simple possession and fines going way up due to tax cuts, this is their way, give to the rich and jail the poor. Here's the big distraction, here's a tax cut, now let us do whatever we want. Deja vu Raygun did it, Bush did it, now these guys are doing it. Kinda strange how most of the states that are legal now are blue states, is this political payback for not voting their way? You're right, this can't end soon enough, right on Spacebrother, vote folks, in every election, local, state and federal it's the only way to drain their swamp of this stink and corruption and lies that these people are feeding all of us. Just say no, like, no way man.

This is why it's imperative that everybody get out and vote. November will be here sooner than you think. The deck is severely stacked against those of us who want to see it legalized (because of hyper-gerrymandering), even though more than 60% of us support it.

... that's my take at least.

It's just the chatter of false teeth distracting from the apple.

I'll bet Fed Agents are going to react the same way that the Military did when "they" announced "No Transgender in the Military!"
The response: "Ummmm... General's, you can igmore that... yes we are!"

this makes no sense at all, other than to continue to be needlessly cruel to (mostly) poor people, the people who need it for their health, and (almost certainly) to the people of color who will suffer most from this. Oh, it also probably satisfies his buddies/donors who run private prisons.

I never stray into politics on this board but this attempt to go back in time on this issue is typical of the stupidity and cruelty that this band of idiots have displayed over the past year.

Federal Policy on Weed

I noticed that too. I can't say I am surprised..

Lock people of up for weed, what could possibly go wrong (besides ruining the lives of a few thousand people).

Lets hope there is some pushback and this policy change gets a second look. Most people do not support policing marijuana laws, including me.

no more legal pot?

Just read on the internet that Sessions will end the federal policy of not going after legal pot sales in states that have legalized it. Death blow to the marijuana industry? Look out folks, the feds are coming. The last time this happened, they waited until there was lots of product and cash, then they raided and took everything, including houses, cars and any thing else of value.

IMHO the best bonus is the Beyond Description bonus disc. Nothing could ever top the SNACK benefit and the PhilStomp that is the Shakedown on there. FYI if you missed it, I just got the Rockin the Rhein bonus off Ebay for $50 - definitely worth it for Caution > Unique Jam alone. Dave where is 10-12-68, 10-29-77, 7-29-88 and 5-30-92? Supermassive black holes control star formation in large galaxies
Astronomers find close correlation between the mass of a galaxy's central black hole and its star formation history
January 01, 2018
By Tim Stephens

Young galaxies blaze with bright new stars forming at a rapid rate, but star formation eventually shuts down as a galaxy evolves. A new study, published January 1, 2018, in Nature, shows that the mass of the black hole in the center of the galaxy determines how soon this "quenching" of star formation occurs.

Winterland '78 DVD release article in SF Chronicle

It was 1978, the night they closed old Winterland down -- and the Grateful Dead's all-night show lives on in memories, flashbacks -- and now a DVD
Joel Selvin, Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic Published 4:00 am, Thursday, October 23, 2003

Bill Graham put a billboard on the side of Winterland for New Year's Eve 1978, the night the Grateful Dead closed the dilapidated old hall, which had an appointment with the wrecker's ball. "They're not the best at what they do, " it read, "they're the only ones that do what they do." On the sidewalk under the sign, a Deadhead waiting days in advance of the show held a sign of his own: "1535 Days Since Last S.F. 'Dark Star.' "

... pass the whisky ‘round

Happy New Year to you all!! I’ll raise a glass for another trip around the sun (that, of course, includes this site, more releases, the good folks here, and the greater GD comunity — it’s so amazing how we continue to endure, evolve and expand). If you are unable to raise a glass of (traditional) cheer, I salute your health, and well being — and thank you for the reminder to always stay hydrated (in all sincerity ... this is something I am resolutely focused on with the fresh year ahead).

I haven’t been around the boards too much lately, but I always enjoy coming back for a good read. I’m also very stoked for another year of Dave’s picks, and our ‘77 release in Feb.

My GD music collection is vast, but not complete. Upon reflection, I note not too many bonus discs. Outside of Dave’s Picks, I really only have the Winterland ‘73 and the Winterland ‘77 bonus discs (I was late collecting Dicks Picks and Road Trips) ... c’est la vie, I suppose ... I have so much, and I’m not a super compulsive completist. I bet the bonus disk for the Wall of Sound Road Trips is a good one. I LOVE that release. I should also add Cow Palace to my collection ... that one gets repeated high praise.

All the best folks!! See you in Binghamton!!

Favorite Bonus Discs + New Years Eve 1978

Rockin the Rhein and Fillmore West 1969 , probably my two favorites. I never got bonus discs from either. But was lucky to get a burnt copy thanks to the nice guys on this site here. Pretty sure I bought Rockin the Rhein from best buy and I know I got Fillmore West box set way after it was released for a pretty penny

Winterland 1978 , I never got the 4 CD set , but ordered the DVD from dead net when it was released. I remember it came with the bonus disc , which is excellent. Probably the reason I ordered DVD over the 4 CD set. And the navy blue tee shirt. Wow! The tee still fits !! Beautiful artwork , one of my favorites from all GD art

Rockin' the Rhein bonus

I hadn't heard about that problem with the bonus disc. I pre-ordered and got a bonus disc without any problem, but I cannot remember exactly when I placed my order - probably as soon as it was announced on here. That would have been back in the days of the old website, i.e. pre-2007.

"Rare" bonus disc?

For me, the "rare" bonus disc is the one that came with pre-orders of Rockin' the Rhein release from May 2004. I had pre-ordered it and just before the street date of 5/25/2004, I got an email that there was a "problem" and I would not be getting the bonus disc. I tried to place another pre-order, but the distribitor system was using at the time would not take my 2nd pre-order. As it was, I just got one copy of Rockin' the Rhein WITHOUT the bonus disc. I was able to track down one on ebay a few years later for a good price.

That bonus disc was from the "warm-up for the Europe tour" shows at the Academy of Music, NYC, 3/72.
It is:
1. Playing In the Band (3/22/72)
2. Sugar Magnolia > (3/22)
3. Caution > (3/22)
4. Jam > (3/22)
5. Uncle John's Band (3/22)
6. Dark Star (3/23)

Fillmore West 1969 Bonus Disc

Grateful Dead

Initial release: 2005
Grateful Dead Records

A bonus CD that was distributed with pre-ordered copies of the 10 CD complete Fillmore West 1969 recordings box set and the 3 CD compilation of music from the Fillmore West 1969 shows. The music on the bonus CD is previously unreleased live recordings from shows at the Carousel Ballroom/Fillmore West between 1968 and 1970.

He Was A Friend Of Mine (Traditional arr Grateful Dead)

Mickey Hart - drums
Bill Kreutzmann - drums

The tracks on the CD were recorded at shows on the following dates;

He Was A Friend Of Mine - June 8, 1969
China Cat Sunflower - June 8, 1969

China Cat Sunflower - February 7, 1970
I Know You Rider - February 7, 1970
High Time - February 7, 1970
The first of these was at the Fillmore East rather than the Carousel Ballroom/Fillmore West.

This bonus CD was distributed with pre-ordered copies of;

Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings, Grateful Dead, 2005
Fillmore West 1969: Compilation, Grateful Dead, 2005

Also need to "borrow" Jim's time machine to go back and get the whole 6/14/68 SBD before (according to Dave L) everything but Caution was tragically wiped. This AUD tape and the Caution on the bonus disc is all that is left. The lysergic energy is unbelievable. Just listen to the third St. Stephen ever.

New Year's 76/Cow Palace

New Year's 76 is definitely a top 20 all time release. The setlist looks mediocre, but the playin' is as good as anything to come in 77. It was also the only release for like a year or longer around 2007 because of the Jerry estate lawsuits so a lot of people had stopped paying attention and missed out. has the download if you still need it and can't afford eBay prices. Cow Palace did have a BONUS DISC, a spectacular one. It was named The Spirit of 76 (take note Dave, this is what a real bonus disc looks like):

Music 6.9.76
Crazy Fingers 6.9.76
Let It Grow 10.2.76
Might as Well 10.2.76
Playin' > Supplication > Playin' 9.24.76
Scarlet 9.30.76

The Closing of Winterland DVD (not CD) also had a good bonus disc. The big jams from New Year's 77.

Easy Wind 12.31.70
Jam > Peter 12.31.71
Playin' > Lazy Lightning > Supplication 12.31.77
Sugar Mag 12.31.77

Betty Board. Awesome sound quality. Everyone in their place and clearly audible. Not a GOAT concert but a wonderful release. Brought it out for a re-listen because of the buzz about it here and it has been the perfect New Years Eve and New Years Day companion. Thanks all. And to all for 2018...Be well and prosper.

Best show of ‘79?

12-31-78 GD started playing at midnight, so the show is technically 1-1-79.
Watching it now. I don’t need bowl games, I need GOGD.

Happy New Year all, looking forward to this year’s releases.

I can't believe this.

First time I forgot. Life was so busy this year. I hope it is not a look at things to come. What a year. It went by way too fast amigos. I missed this number one thing to do in life every year and I f'ing missed it. Pray I get each one this year via this site the day they go on sale. I CANNOT miss this. You know how it is. Cant break the collection. Literally a budget for this band yearly since my first show. My lord the amount of money. I would never want to add it up. Keep bringing music and Ill keep buying it with this quality. I am one of them. QUALITY. Never thought I would think that way until the world changed and I listened to my first Apple lossless sound and CDHD quality from the GRATEFUL DEAD. My lord. Headphones and your choice of goodies and say goodbye to real life for a few hours. Isn't that what it was always about? Happy New Year all my friends and family.

NYE '76 & T minus 30 days 'til Wall of Keys!

Best "Around & Around." Really fun when they changed the tempo and feel up. Bobby was often up for and/or good for that.

One month 'til we get 11-6-77. Woot.
