Dave's Picks Volume 22: Felt Forum, NYC 12/7/71 - SOLD OUT
Feelin' fine with the Felt Forum! Dave's Picks Volume 22 presents the last stop on a collector's choice run in the Grateful Dead's home-away-from-home, New York City. 12/7/71 yields a highly pleasurable Pigpen-filled show and what was surely a top-notch Tuesday for all who attended. Talk about vibe-ing with the crowd! At their prime in terms of lineup and performance, the Dead churned out a batch of songs that would soon become well-worn Europe '72 favorites ("Jack Straw," "Brown Eyed Women") and also served up solid versions of freshly-minted classics ("Sugar Mag," "Friend," "Casey Jones"). That winning combination of Pigpen AND Keith? Nothing but peak "signature showstoppers" including what could potentially be the finest "Smokestack Lightning" of all time. The complete show runs a wee bit short (for a Grateful Dead show, that is) so we've rounded out the release with much of the second set from the previous night, December 6, 1971. With exceptional takes on the likes of "Wharf Rat" and "Uncle John's Band" and a massive "The Other One," we're pretty sure you won't mind.
Limited to 16,500 individually numbered copies, Dave's Picks Volume 22: Felt Forum, New York, NY - 12/7/71 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and features illustrations by our 2017 Artist in Residence Dave Van Patten (stay tuned to learn more about the illustrator in an upcoming All In The Family piece).

I personally think Cutler is washed up.. he hasn't done much for me since the GD cut him lose in '74.. so you can imagine my surprise to see the Miama Dolphin's sign him as QB, enticing him with a treasure chest full of coin.
Plus.. he's in terrible shape, the decades of chain smoking, prison time..
Still, I wish him luck with his new endeavor..
Much happiness and success to Sam Culter and the Miami Dolphins!

I know we're in a bind with RT down, but if Ross & Co. wanted a Chicago import, why not just airlift in a boardroom full of ribs from Smoque? Seriously. The New Chicago Cubs.

Calling all Kates...
Thanks, looks like there's more there than time to waste. Will be signing up in a minute to take it in.
footnote - Anybody listening to "The Record Company", try-em you'll like them. And they're playing at Lockn! (YES)
They don't allow for trolling there and ban people that stray from talking about the music.
I heard the real words were, "rubber baby buggy bumper", 5 times fast. Good luck.
She is an active participant on the Hoffman boards as are many people that used to hang here.
...and we know that works with Bolo....sometimes....
I'm tossing another log on the fire..and breaking out the Ouija board. Perhaps we need to open a bottle of Kentucky's finest bourbon and she will grace these boards using words I can't seem to get through spell check on the first try.
Remember the movie Beetlejuice.. if you said his name three time he will magically appear?
I hear if you say "Eight sided whispering hallelujah hatrack" three times she will come.
Ha, I've noticed this too...Kate C. Such a breath of momentary fresh air behind these closed doors; then, * poof *....away she goes until next time....
Indeed, RIP DaP22...it sure did conjure up some interesting posts and convos (as always).
Just here to help put the final embers out....
Long live DaP....
New release has me excited....
Love me some late 70's Donna....
Kate is clearly an enigma from the future that spends her days visiting tortured souls from the past.
I hear you can conjure her presence by opening old Dave's Picks threads and coaxing her out of her wormhole using a Ouija Board and quoting Dr. Seuss.
RIP DaP 22.
She loves to haunt empty rooms. Hi Kate.
In 2015 after Aquarium Rescue Unit I found $5 on the floor and used it to tip my cab driver who drove me home.
Sometimes I break into the empty old rooms, bring my friends and have a party.
The music's usually pretty good.. Sometimes you can find a little stash somebody left behind.
Putting a few things away, sweeping, dusting, and looking back to make sure every thing is in place. Yup. All done here. Turning out the lights and closing the door. Moving down to Room 23. See ya.
So we always get a bunch of crazy talk around release time. Some are indignant and childishly dropping F-bombs at TPTB that we haven't gotten any news yet so close to release date. One is suggesting that they always include an 80's show in order to "keep increasing subscriptions under control" (???), and another is suggesting that it simply must be already sold out (subs obviously didn't equal full capacity on Dave's 21 or 22, so obviously DaP23 isn't already sold out either.)
My guess is that, in this era of efficient logistics/fulfillment, they don't NEED to announce weeks ahead of shipping anymore. You don't gain ANYTHING by announcing it 3 weeks before shipping, especially when it sells out in <48 hours anyway. It's well-known that people are more likely to buy something online if it will arrive quickly. By waiting until the actual ship date to announce, it 1) creates more anticipation (evidenced by recent posts) and 2) likely spurs better sell-thru since buyers know they'll have that show in their hands by the weekend! It's a common-sense "best-practice": Consumers respond to immediacy - nowadays they expect it. Dead.net/Rhino are probably acting smartly and accordingly.
I'm personally glad they are delaying the reveal, and echo others' willingness to receive the package without knowing what's in it. THAT's exciting. Too often I have begun to render an opinion AHEAD of the arrival - it's hard to NOT have an opinion ahead of its arrival when you have 3 weeks to think about it and discuss it on this board. First impressions are important - why shouldn't the first impression be the ACTUAL ARRIVAL in your mailbox?! It just makes sense - nothing is gained by foretelling weeks in advance.
....fuck me running
You mean I actually guessed it?
Indeed VGuy, the donut shows have been wonderful thus far. I may take a break this week but I will still be keeping up on some level.
And now I see all hell has broken loose for DaP 23...most excellent!
Wow... awesome pick.
I only have a pretty bad audio version of that show.
The soundboard that circulates is of terrible quality too.
Can't wait to hear it in all its glory!
move off this thread onto #23, eugene
....caught my first Phish show in '93. True, they're not on par with their '96-'98 peak (imo), but they still got it. Light years better than the 2001-2004 selves. Loving the ambient jams they put out now. Just glad they're still here, playing short tours. Too bad we couldn't jump into the WAYBAC and tell that to The Grateful Dead circa 1985....
It cannot be sold out already as they haven't yet offered it for sale. True, (some) people with the subscription have received a mail stating that their order is on its way, but the GD Store didn't sell 16500 subscriptions. The previous 2 Dave's Picks were offered for sale and they haven't sold any more subscriptions since then.
I guess the Seaside Chat will appear with the relevant webpage, when it finally appears. It is surprising that the announcement still hasn't been made even though shipping notices have been sent. Oooooooooooh! The suspense!
Man!!! Crazy to get the shipping notice first. Hope to get announcement soon. On Phish, to me they are light years away from how they used to play. Don't call me a hater, because I love Phish. I watched the recent free webcast and the interaction seems to be gone and it looks like they'd rather be somewhere else. The jams just slowly meander. I know many people still diggin it, but having seen them back in '92 it's tough to compare that to now. Again, I love them, I just don't see the fire there anymore.
Well, whatever it is, it's headed my way...
Shipping notice received Who'da thunk I'd miss Dave's seaside chat? But I do
I am not so into Phish but i will be there at end of week, i think its really cool they are doing songs associated with donut flavors. The strawberry milkshake donut looked mighty tasty
hopefully they save a special batch, anybody on here make high quality edibles ?
so no point in denouement.
is Dave the Victim or the Crime?
Don't know what it is yet, but I'm sure we'll find out soon !
....Bakers Dozen Phish run at MSG is a flipping genius. Rumor has it they won't repeat a single song during the residency. Their catalogue backs it up. The song guessing game in phishland has never been stronger....And the light rig! Man oh man. Incredible. Amirite sixtus? Ok sorry, back to GD talk. (I couldn't help it)....
Have a big 5 hour drive from Los Angeles to Boy Scout camp up past Fresno this weekend, would be great to have a shiny new Dave's Pick to educate the kids on the ride up! And then to keep me awake at deafening volume for the drive back home again!
....announcement should happen today, but at this point, I would rather have my mailman tell me the show. I like blind taste tests....
surely some good ones worthy of release from 84-88 zone, even if sourced from inferior quality, but certainly not a priority now with the return of betty boards. those 80s shows sound great on the archive already.
Even road trips coughed up some decent 80s, plus that sweet Hampton box set that took forever to sell out. some standouts too from TTATS, but most were underwhelming.
why waste all that production talent on an era for which there is little demand and source quality is thin? Dave's 80s Colorado pick was the best available audio source-wise he said. maybe do an 80's cassette series to restore the full vibe. or a box set of some of the high point runs like Greek, Alpine, and Oxford.
on the other hand, now is a good time to throw out another 80s Dave' s Picks as I am severely backlogged and still catching up with GSTL 77 as well as 1978.
Also, a good way to keep increasing subscriptions under control would be to guarantee one 80s release in each series, russian roulette style.
I agree with you wholeheartedly: we must cut Dave some slack. Plus, he is not the sole person responsible for final decisions on releases....1970s, as you said, are The peak time of the Dead. But let's remember 68 and 69. ONE SOUL. WE ARE ONE SISTERS AND BROTHERS
Personally, I think it would be great if DaP 23 were 3/17/91 from the Cap Centre for selfish personal reasons. I was at the show and it was a very good show from top to bottom. Plus it had the Rueben & Cherise breakout, plus a killer New Speedway Boogie, which I believe was only the second time they'd played it in YEARS (the other being about a week prior).
Now... certain persons who complain about the DaP selections I believe are a bit unfair towards Dave. I think Dave loves ALL periods of the Dead. He's just honest enough to admit that the best shows still out there are mostly from the 70s. In my opinion, the only clunker so far in the Dave's Picks series was that 80s show from Boulder that he threw in last year. It was, in my opinion, clearly the weakest show of the series thus far.
still need to pick that one up
i would much rather know the initial two releases for next year's subscription than an official announcement of this year's remaining, as Bolo's clues pretty much already gave those away.
I've been on vacation in the lovely Rockies for the past few days (still there) and I was certain that DaP 23 would have been announced by now. C'mon Dave! I guess after basically knowing the first 2 releases this year months in advance, we've gotten spoiled.
Last night was Back to Normal with the Grateful Dead. Underrated I think. Bobby does kind of give Scarlet / Fire "the slide treatment", but it's otherwise excellent. Very awesome Music Never Stopped - the definitive version for me. I enjoy more than the July shows.
This morning I put "Doodah Man" for my kid, Road Trips Autumn '71 style. That's a 5/5 star show there. Adios, good day to all.
I think we all know that we are going to get skeletons on the covers of both #23 & #24, whatever the show dates. For something different we are going to have to wait for the artist of the year 2018.
Estimating prof, regarding the artwork...based on my guess of 1-31-70, I'd like to see a bowling lane with the band members as anthropomorphic bowling pins...almost certainly not gonna happen...
Count me as one who would be fine with not finding out the contents of the new release until it hit my mail box. And I'd be sure not to look at the set list before listening.
Looking forward to hearing Dave's 23. Very curious to see what it will be.
One piece of feedback I have been thinking about on the Dave's picks is that I haven't found this year's artwork to be real exciting. I'd love to see Dave/Rhino consider Alan Forbes for some cover artwork. He is a SF artist who does all the artwork for Chris Robinson Brotherhood and for bands and shows in California. His art is truly psychedelic and generally very beautiful. He gets my vote as someone who is pushing old school style. psychedelic rock and roll art forward. I really like his work. I think it would be great for some dead releases - like a year of Dave's picks.
I hadn't been listening to a large amount of Dead this summer, but have been really enjoying this year's 77 box this past week. Such a sweet sound on those recordings!!
Picks will be in the mail and in our ears soon! Hope everyone has a good rest of the summer.
HA HA! yes it can stir up quite the frustration. its a great game series. mega man 2 is my favorite game of all time. I didn't beat Mega Man 2 until I got the anniversary collection. I kept getting up to Dr Wily as a kid and felt I tried every weapon. I didn't I tried everything but Bubble Man's weapon its such a crappy weapon I didn't even bother trying. which it turns out Bubble Man's Weapon is the ONLY thing that will work lol. I didn't even get that far the first one as a kid either that gustman level is too hard for a kid lol. but after I bought anniversary collection I did eventually beat 1,2,3 and 4 and finally put my inner demons to rest.
....i recall breaking more than one controller playing Megaman games. I had anger issues then....
Does anyone have SBD or Matrix of 12/31/80? I'm kinda trying to collect NYE shows. also who recorded 12/31/78? I've looked over the liner notes of Closing Of Winterland and can't find anything.
What's the price of a la carte releases? $30? $35? Plus shipping.
It would seem best to order the subscription for $99 with free shipping and then if you get one you don't like you can sell it or gift it to somebody. At least you would be guaranteed to get all 4 and not have to worry about a single release selling out before you have a chance to order it.
Minas has a good idea for a separate series (CD though, not download) where you get an 80's release that you know ahead of time that the master was made on a cassette and not on a multi-track reel.
Anything whose master is on multi-track or DAT would still be eligible for release as a DaP.
I'll buy those too as long as it's a good performance. Just another way for Rhino to separate me from my $.
Rhino is lucky that they have addicts like us.......best not to piss us off...
