Lunt-Fontanne, NYC: The Best of the Rest—October 15-30, 1987 is a three-disc set culling highlights from Jerry Garcia's historic run on Broadway. Each of Garcia's performances at the Lunt-Fontanne was comprised of two parts—the acoustic band opened the shows with a revue of roots of music including gospel, blues and Americana, followed by a rousing set from the electric band. Disc One and Disc Two spotlight plugged-in treasures, opening with the Broadway run's only—and excellent—rendition of "I'll Take A Melody." Jerry's interaction with the backup vocalists shines on "Forever Young," and Bob Weir sits in on two other Dylan covers—"When I Paint My Masterpiece" and "All Along The Watchtower." Other stand-outs are a sublime Garcia solo on Van Morrison's "And It Stoned Me," and gospel classics including "Like A Road" and "Lucky Old Sun." The superb acoustic material on Disc Three is performed by a one-time-only line-up of virtuoso instrumentalists including Sandy Rothman on strings and Kenny Kosek on fiddle.
