We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Cleveland Public's PITB was over 20

I saw the 22 minute version from 10/28/72... checking my old Maxell's for a longer one. Dark Star that night was a gem, with the mirror ball spinning and flashing.

Compare the flaw at 1m13s of today's download to the following timings in these sources. The download is significantly better quality than all of them, and the beginning is not cut.

Thanks for the free Playin'

Now I have a suggestion. I would be willing to pay for a Premium Upgrade that would edit out Donna's banshee bit from 1:58 to 2:03. I am not a Donna hater, but that bit always grates on my last good nerve.

Download Problems

This is my 6th attempt at the download and it never gets past 39MB or about 15min in song length. Maybe 7th time is the charm.

playin

It's a stand-alone Playing with Donna and one drummer, so that narrows it down to 72-74, and the length (28+ minutes) narrows it even further. I had it narrowed to two, and the one I guess turned out to be wrong. So that leaves it at one version left that I think it is, but that too is probably wrong!

Is that an eyewitness account, then?! Must've been a sweet window when you got to another galaxy with Playin' AND with Dark Star (or The Other One) in the same show, before the former basically replaced the latter's slot.

I can't stop for nothing, I'm just Playing in the band...

arkusrymer: I'm definitely not complaining. I'm sure they'll work out the kinks. Fortunately I have not had any of the downloading problems other folks have had. I'm with you, if I don't win that's okay. I'm having the time of my life putting 30 years of Grateful Dead knowledge to the test. It's giving me focus.

Although I could probably do this, I wouldn't take Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and paint over the tiny bit of cleavage shown.....as I wouldn't take out Donna of a Masterpiece of a song.

Just sayin'

WOW, 28:57 min

yetay, Thats got to be one of the largest PIB I ever heard, tight, defenitly early, 69-71. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert, Dead show, or Furthur we will go. But 30 days of Dead is as good as it gets right now. AT LEAST WERE ENJOYING THE RIDE111
Thanks all us Dead Heads 4 sure.

I feel I was close with 2/15/73 but probably wrong. I based my choice on the quality of the recording. 5/13/73 sounds like a better pick.

whew!

Well, it took three tries (got all the way to 44MBs the 2nd try), but I got it! Unless tomorrow's tune is Don't Ease, I think I'm calling it good on 30 Days, disc one.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only wish....

....that Grateful Dead records would've been as fearlessly adventurous as the music ~ they should've realized this Playin' as a whole album. Called Playin'.

What a fun little game...

I don't know the date or show... but sounds like a 70's vintage...

Nice!

Yes, I went right to 1973 myself and honed in on 5/13/73. Had an old bootleg of part of this show. My entry was a little late, oh well. I think most of the winners of this will be people with either lots of time on their hands, a fast internet connection (to cross check with Archive), one hell of a GD collection, or LUCK! (^_^)

Clue for tomorrow's tune

PAPPYPGH (and anyone else who cares), here is the clue for tomorrow's download, via Twitter:

DeadNet Clue: Tomorrow's #30DAYSOFDEAD track is a Pigpen tune that was only played live by the Grateful Dead between 1969 and 1971.

absolutely (deadly) brilliant

I want to thank everyone involved in executing this project. What a brilliant piece of marketing. Pump up the web site traffic and get those dead-ly juices flowing. It must be merely coincidental that the Christmas shopping season will have officially begun by the time the contest is over. I'm not complaining - I'm just sayin'

Personal Favorite PITB

4/6/89 in Ann Arbor, MI is mighty high on the list. The freshness of material they were playing had everyone on their toes. The crunchy twang of Bobby's high strung guitar, Phil's hammering runs and Brent's organ riffs give this one true identity. Jerry does some steering from the outside in... and when it seems they've gotten completely lost... well... the transition speaks for itself. Great show from front to end!

Iowa State Fairgrounds...

is in Des Moines, Iowa

I'm 100% certain that 5/13/73 is the correct answer - compare the version here with that on the Archive when Weir stumbles on the second verse...

Been doing my Day 5 research here - previewing lots of "rollin' 'cross the bayou today" - what a great Pig tune!

I missed the download. That was my first Dead show. I was 15. Blew my mind and set my feet on a path that I have never regretted.

yea got it right

Figured it out. This was a lot tougher than the Dark Star a couple of days ago. I was immediately correct in guessing the year, but the timing threw me off. This is much longer than almost any other version they played around the same time. Nice to hear it exists in such good sound quality because the version on the archive is pretty bad.

Today's download

Hey what happened to the download? The page gave me the song, venue and date but no download?? Is there a time expiration or something? I've had no problem the first 3 days.

If Canyon Critter would post the link to Playing in the Band..........it would be most appreciated :)

Where Is Nov. 4th File?

Logged in late and someone already won. But the file to download is not there...and I not seeing it someplace on the page? Also, please adjust your November calendar. It shows the week starting on a Monday the 1st. That's OK in Europe, but most of us start the week on Sunday. So, Monday should be in the second spot with a blank spot for Sunday, Oct. 31st.

Cheers!
