what an oddity. what a great (re)discovery.

Like a GD show, but different. "Mickey Hart and His Heartbeats."

Hard to hear some of the Pigpen material (low volume).

It is more like what Jerry called a "public rehearsal".

lots of acoustic foreplay, with no electric release afterward. (blue) balls of lightning (hopkins) roll along.

No complaints, though. It is a true treasure.

Thank you to MG for giving the tapes to DaL. And thank you DaL et al for making the project happen.

I'm a space case... :)

no hidin' that fact. Not offensive either. In fact I was thinking of using that for my user name. As far as the artwork goes, I particularly like the petalless poppy seed pods next the other flowers illustrated. A couple of morning glories would've rounded that bouquet out nicely. Nice artwork again as usual.

Chiefs Stealie

Well, this may not be the best stealie ever, but I'm also a sucker for some SYF / sports logo combos. This one combines two of my passions (being originally from Kansas City):

to say nothing of

the ingenious variations on the theme. Almost deserves a thread of its own: Best Stealie Ever...

Anna, exactly - the May 77 Box was a graphic arts peak for any genre. In fact, one of the reasons I'm so high on this Almanac art is that it kind of reminds of that, only in the sense that it manages to be very different from earlier Dead art styles, while maintaining the tropes that make it instantly recognizable as Dead art.

Mary - I must admit, I'm a sucker for SYF images and skulls.

Gee Ms. Reddin

Why are you in such a snoot about the artwork? I thought the artwork and graphics for this almanac were pretty cool and I felt like Rhino really hit it's peak this year with the Spring 77 box.

I have artists I don't like (one in particular) but won't call him out cuz I don't want to hurt his feelings. In general, the artwork of Grateful Dead produced stuff is far superior to any other band past and present. Even stuff that doesn't have to do with the covering of a musical release.

Stoltzfus, you are right... this is just more evidence of how much great stuff they are putting out right now, a few years ago the release of this previously unheard acoustic set would have been big news, now it's part of a stream of mind blowing releases (returned reels, Veneta, and so on). Can't wait for it (vinyl in this case for me). Though I'm not perhaps as enthused by the Pigpen solo stuff as some are, I'm certainly intrigued.

As for the Almanac Art, I hope none of this is directed at me - I've twice written about how much I love the style of this artist, and would like to know who he or she is. As far as I can see there has only been one (rather bizarre) negative comment about the art, so why the big fuss? Seems like it's been pretty positive...

what the heck?

Who in their right mind would come on here and criticize the artwork of any GD related item? They have had consistently the best , most recognizable logos and symbols that have lasted for 45 years. Seriously , dont order it , you dont need it.
