In 1973, following the recent passing of founding member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and the temporary exit of drummer Mickey Hart, Grateful Dead released WAKE OF THE FLOOD. As the debut album from their own record label, Grateful Dead Records, the studio LP marked a period of transition, growth, endurance and optimism for the band, introducing a fresh lineup that included new members Keith and Donna Godchaux on keys and vocals. While songs like “Eyes Of The World,” “Stella Blue,” and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” were largely road-tested for more than half a year beforehand, and have remained staples of live sets by any number of Dead-related bands ever since, the album and record label delivered both a profound artistic statement and proof of concept for the community, ideals and future the band were building.
All pressings of WAKE OF THE FLOOD (50TH ANNIVERSARY REMASTER) feature Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction and are newly mastered by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer, David Glasser and produced for release by Grateful Dead Legacy Manager and Audio Archivist, David Lemieux.
Bummer there isn't more Anniv. Merch for this one
Very excited about this 50th anniversary release for Wake of the Flood. The 50th anniversary releases I think I look forward to almost as much if not more sometimes than the record store day releases. I am bummed to see there are not any other offerings for this one as there always are for all the 5oth anniv. Releases. No art prints, no shirts, no other exciting offerings to commemorate this one. Which would've been pretty epic considering how pivotal 73 was and being their 1st release at the time on their own label. Oh well, looking forward to the vinyl, and hope they kick it up a notch again for the next anniversary release, which I think would be Mars Hotel? Here's hoping..
No T-shirt? This custy has a sad
Agree with THESHERIFF, would have loved a 50th anniversary T-shirt of this one! Odd for just this release to be so light on commemorative merch. I mean come on, we got Cosmic Camping and United States of Dead for all 50 states, but no Wake of the Flood? Weird
Happy custy got his T-shirt!
One day after I post complaining about no Wake of the Flood 50th anniversary T-shirts, and there they are! Nice work dead.net keeping us custies happy.
HERE WE GO!!!
BOBALEW finally!! Was hoping there was a chance they'd sneak something in later on, so here we go finally!! Just ordered my print, gotta snatch the ltd ed of 200 before that sells out.. definitely getting a shirt too. Always loved that poster ad for the original release of WOTF, and seems pretty tough to come by an original, at least without breaking the bank. so happy they recreated this original art for the print. been not so excited about some the other recent print designs, and love when they revive original vintage artwork like this one. I'm not rolling in cash or anything, but I'll definitely shell out some of my hard earned $$ for stuff like this.
It just arrived!
I'm so happy about this new record that just arrived on my doorstep. It has a reprint of the original lithograph and a notice about counterfeits. Also, the amazing color of the record itself that isn't overproduced with wordage, just a deadhead's eye for the number of tracks or a hawk's eye to be able to read the plain etching around the center circle showing you a simple -1 for side one and -2 for side two. Now to let it spin and roll something nice to go with it...enjoy!
Just got also.
Like Vega says,,, great color. I got all three, the regular vinyl, the picture disc and the cds.
The picture disc is very nice,,,, again no extra shit on it, just the picture.
The cd's were wrapped in a cardboard sleeve which had been embossed,,,, added a nice touch.
Quick question, folks out there who have bought past picture disc and played them.
How do they sound?
When first out, they didn't sound so good. I worry about the color albums in general vs just being black.
But nice package.
Coloured records
Dennis - the coloured ones I have bought over the last few years have sounded great. I haven't bought a Dead yet though. Trying to think of one.....Diamond Dogs on blood red vinyl is one - really good sound.
But yes, in the 70's-80's a coloured disc seemed more crackly. I associated them with punk - a bit brash and crude with poorer sound quality. But hey - it's the latest thing! Or was then.
Quality Control!? I just got…
Quality Control!?
I just got my copy of the colored vinyl and am a little disapointed. First thing I noticed is no indication on the label (either side) of which side is A vs. B. The labels are just the crow-head graphic, and both sides the printing is a little runny. There are a lot of pops on the vinyl, even after cleaning. Yikes!
Never had an issue with any GD vinyl before.
Picture vinyl
I purchased the picture vinyl and the quality of the audio is not too good. Between tracks, it sounds like the is a jet flying overhead, which is also slightly detectable during the tracks as well. This being the first picture vinyl I’ve owned, so I wasn’t really sure if this is a norm or not. The music is still the music!

Audio quality of this LP is horrific
The blue vinyl is beautiful and the outer sleeve is good quality. The LP label is runny like an inkjet printer using wet paper (on purpose?) and the only way I can tell one side from another is the runs are slightly different. The album mix sounds like it was put through a low pass filter - you can barely hear cymbals or discern what is going on. I have heard previous mixes of this album that also sounded muddy and I was hopeful this "remaster" would clear it up to be bearable, but no such luck. It's really too bad because the music is great.
Hey- I'm not sure if this is…
Hey- I'm not sure if this is okay or not, but I have one of the limited Wake of the Flood prints of the edition that was limited to 200. I'd like to sell it. I'm into it for $65 for shipping and handling. I'm asking $70 with shipping. It is still in the original mailing tube. It was opened just to look at.
I hope that pimping something to sell isn't a breach of protocol....which leads me to also having a Garcia print from Bottleneck gallery that I'm also hoping to get $70 for.
PM me if you're interested in one or both.
Thank you.
