We have often been asked how we’d go about selecting the year from which the next Dick Pick or Vault Release was selected. It was always a very involved process, but the key factor was walking outside in the morning and seeing what the temperature was that day. Today, it was 71 degrees, so we figured we’d bring you a nice selection of music from 1971, October specifically, Keith’s first tour, and the tour from which the magical Dick’s Picks Vol. 2 was drawn. That Pick is rightfully called a one-disc wonder.
Our first selection from that mighty little tour is from 10/22/71 in Chicago. From that great show we have the rare pairing of That’s It For The Other One>Deal. It might look a little odd on paper, but it certainly does work in practice.
From a couple of days later in Detroit, on 10/24/71, we have the other quintessential 1971 second set jamming vehicle, Dark Star. Although this rendition doesn’t quite reach the peaks as the version from 10/31/71 (Dick’s Picks Vol. 2), it still goes to some amazing places, and is certainly a worth companion to that of 10/31/71.
Finally from our brief foray into October, 1971, we have the show-closing jam of Not Fade Away>Drums>Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad>Not Fade Away from 10/27/71 in Syracuse, complete with a nifty China Cat jam. Be sure to check back in a couple of weeks for another stunning NFA>GDTRFB>NFA from late 1971.
Lastly this week, also from October, but a year later, is the second set jam from 10/24/72 in Milwaukee. This is a classic 1972 jam featuring Truckin’>The Other One>He’s Gone>The Other One. Inspired, deep and interesting.
Be sure to check back next week when we’ll have some music from 1973, amongst some other great stuff, we expect. As always, feel free to write with questions or comments. It’s always nice to hear from you.

Great picks
Love 'em! Just might have to pick up DP 2.
Have to say, must be nice to live in a place where it is always between 65 and 95 degrees. :) Wonder what we'd have heard if the vault was here in Ohio where it was 32 this AM? Another deep question for the community to ponder.....we certainly have the great tunes to do it to! Thanks Dave.
Link to Dick's Pick #2
Careful - the link on the page for Dick's Pick 2 is wrong. It points to View from the Vault II, Washington DC, 6/14/91 and not to the show David is talking about (Columbus OH, 10/31/71.) Not that there is anything wrong with either show -- they are both great.
Dick's Picks #2 link fixed
Thanks Barrie. That slipped by me. Link is fixed now.
This hurts...
This is probably (in my opinion) the GREATEST PERIOD that the Grateful Dead ever had... I love all of this stuff.... by far my favorite week of the year for Taper Section material, however, now I can't keep it... now I can't listen to it while walking outside, or comuting to work, or better yet, comuting home from work on a Friday...
This is when it hurts the most... not to being able to save this stuff....
Thanks for the music though, GREAT selections.........

Ohio Theatre
Halloween 1971 in the ornate Ohio Theatre must have been incredible. My late friend Bart Biechele saw the Dead for the first time here, as did friends Barry & Joe, now in Colorado. Dicks Picks 2 is just a portion of the show. Regarding the stream from Milwaukee 10/24/72, all I can say is "Wow", what a wonderful jam out of the Other One. All treat... (no trick). Thanks David!
fading away
Yeah, less and less being offered each week.Streaming only. Less interest. Fewer listeners.
Does look like the "anti-tapers section" is being phased out.
I still listen to the wonderful mp3s I downloaded from here all the time.
They escaped before the clampdown, and we are grateful for that.
See you at the shows.
......Sigh......
Another week and still no announcements for a new release.
I'll %^*$#(^%!@ You
This is to be my last request how ever it gets written and read on the walls. I want doors on the bathroom stalls to reach the ground so that way when Jerry Garcia decides to barge in and start a flippin concert whilst I take number two he can wait in line. No drumz from 1992 yet? how else is a space to be used in this myspace i wanted space not space. Poo poo platter on a coupon up at grocery stores on sale ! why is microsoft in small print on these records? Xbox 360 is to red ring as toilets in public restroom is to red ring.
Great Music....
Dave, I love your picks, as usual...but how can I not notice this:
"We have often been asked how we’d go about selecting the year from which the next Dick Pick or Vault Release was selected."
PAST TENSE???? Say it ain't so!
Well, even if tomorrow Rhino announced that they decided to just burn all the vault tapes for firewood, I would still love the Dead and I would still be grateful for all I have received. (But a new release would sure be cool!)

God is good.
I love the tunes, this is
I love the tunes, this is definately one of the band's finest musical periods.I can't help but notice, though, that not one tune is from the actual time period listed. All the tunes should have been in last week's set list.
I know it is picky, but if you are going to date it why not make it accurate?
this week music
rommel55
This could have been a wonderful week.my favourite years!
Jammming from 71 and 72.Can you believe it!?
I could've spent days listening to "The Other One /Deal".
Only there's no downloading anymore...
Did anyone mention new releases?
Are we talking about a new Christina Aguilera single or something?
Is it for real?
How trustworthy can Rhino get?
The music LOOKS great this
The music LOOKS great this week.
Streaming still a frustrating business for me so I have given up and moved on to Vineland. Still its good to see a new wave of whiners taking up the cause!
And welcome back to Jose8, looks like you got some new supplies in!
Free Downloads
I purpose giving away free downloads (of the TS and GDH) with every Sirius radio subscription.
Forget about the fucking toe!
nice job
David, keep up the good work as vault-meister and Taper's Section deliverer. I love all the selections you choose. I certainly never get bored listening to the "same" jams, i.e. NFA > GDTRFB > NFA or Truckin' > He's Gone > The Other One. They're all unique and interesting. What I appreciate the most are the more rare selections and one-off tunes that I've never heard before and probably wouldn't if it weren't for you. THANK YOU!
It's Halloween and No New Release?????!!!?!?!?
On October 29th, 2007 Zaorish said:"Dave, I love your picks, as usual...but how can I not notice this:

I think you're right Zaorish. It's too bad that it seems to truely over. We should have had some news by now.
This Week's Stuff
David,
Very cool stuff. I never get tired of The Other One and am listening to Dark Star right now. I'm sure the '72 Truckin' jam will be right up to speed.
I think you do a great job in spite of the people who whine ans complain about not having everything for free. If I really want some different music I go buy a Dick's Pick and something from the Vault. The worlds not free and if derive as much enjoyment as they claim then it shouldn't be a problem to pay for it.
sigh
interest waning... boredom setting in... last gasp of hope... going, going...
anyone noticed how the postings in this section have declined? i'm liking the music, but interest has surely fallen off. i really feel as though the last nail will be driven into the coffin soon. i'm not really into posting anymore myself. the bloated whale of the tapers section should be pushed back into the sea. either downloads need to be re-instituted, or let's just give up on this whole charade. yeah, i can record the stuff with various software, but i'm noticing more and more glitches every week. sometimes it seems as though the dead.net pages are merely an afterthought. give me some good news soon, or i'm giving up.
this just isn't fun anymore.
bye. perhaps for always.
Grateful Pumpkin?
Don't feel bad enjoyingtheride, I waited in my pumpkin patch for The Grateful Pumpkin all night on Halloween, and NOTHING. Well, maybe next year?
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my underground lair.

thanks for the selections, david. my new jammin' computer speakers and i love to come visit you once or twice a week and hear something fun and new- it's like going over to a friend's house to listen to his records!
i think the road trips selections sound pretty cool too- i'll be in to pick one up this week-
caroline
Great selections. How about
Great selections. How about something from the 85' Richmond shows in November. Great content.
Thanks.
Truckin’>The Other One>He’s Gone>The Other One =.....
......GDH #670.
the music
great selection from Syracuse. There seems to be a lot of belly aching going on about streaming, no downloads, etc. It's all good, some is just better than others. I really love the '78 shows, especially 12-31-78 at Winterland. I have a "bootleg" vinyl album of this show. Simply awesome.
All good stuff
But I have all these tracks already :-( Lets have more rare tracks please!
Is this the end or the beginning?
I have this nagging suspicion that the Road Trips announcement marks the end of the Taper's Section as we know it. Please prove me wrong!
(better yet: Bring back Taper's Section as we used to know it)
Baby Blue
Well, seeing that it's late afternoon Monday and no new Taper's Section goods, and the fact that it's been exactly a year, I do fear it's all over. Makes sense; they were probably just tiding over our notoriously insatiable appetites while they got their shit together for the new release series.
Hey, thanks DL and it was fun while it lasted!
on second thought
although, now that I go back and reread it, it does say check back next week for some 1973 goodness...
Free tunes tomorrow
Like my favorite watering hole used to announce "Free beer tomorrow" Road trip looks likes tapers section. Must be time to beat it on down the line.
"There are 2 kinds of people in the world. Those whose lives have a soundtrack and those lives do not. I have always found that interesting people come supplied with music."
no no no...
Folks, unless something has changed drastically since yesterday morning just before the server meltdown (sigh), this is not the end of TS, it is a MISTAKE. Files have failed to move from Point A to Point B. And then thre was the server meltdown.
A crew is put on it.
Road Trip is NOT replacing TS.
Though even I have to admit that the timing of some of this misbehaving technology is enough to make a conspiracy theorist's day.
No Monday, No David
I am concerned that David is referred to in the past tense on Blair's little piece of information on Road Trips. Hopefully, there will be a posting and I am completely wrong. Just when I get a computer that can stream pretty well...
I believe you Marye
If TS is still alive, thats good. I've said all along on this site that the Dead can do what they want with the music and I won't complain as it is thiers. I don't buy that whole "the music belongs to everyone" theory. Lucky for them, Jerry didnt handle the finances as it sure gets cold in Marin in the winter. I've enjoyed it and will continue to and I sure don't begrudge them from doing whatever they want.

Bring back the downloads
Bring back the mp3's. It frustrating ripping streams.
