the village was unprepared
The local law enforcement of Hoffman Estates was not prepared for the enslaught of people coming in for the show. They decided the best thing to do would be to arrest everyone!
the fat man rocks
Trouble ahead, Jerry in red! Big Jer so BIG. I remember seeing stickers in the lot "The fat man rocks" and thinking, "huh, the 'fat man' must be some Chicago dj"...then, after the show started, I got it. Kinda mean but kinda funny, and isn't all humor a sword? We hardnosed the highway from St Paul. Twisted, tweaked, twurned inside out from too much, too fast, and you KNOW we had such dark eyes, overdose limits of 3 or more "controlled" (as if you could) substances....We stopped at a nice state park in So. Wisc. in the pines by a lake, woulda been a great place to unwind and chill for the day off before Chicago, but (being stupid, naive, etc. we thought the show was the next day) only stopped for some nonsleepful camping, tearing into Chi-town, or at least the northern burb containing Poplar Creek, and we drive into the venue, and I'm thinking "okay, there's the 'dragonfly' truck and other GD equip trucks, but WHERE are all the deadheads? and a Poplar Creek lot attendant girl looks at the 2 guys with dazed looks driving up with SD plates asking "Is there any tickets for tonights show?" and she says, "sure, plenty of seats left, but you guys drove from South Dakota to see BARRY MANILOW?" incredulously...we were shocked and awed and said "God, no, we're here for the Dead". She laughed at us and explained that tonight was BM, tomorrow there were plenty o' seats for the Deads 2 night run, and the Dead were great, she'd just seen 'em a few nights earlier in Madison, and wanted to meet us at such a place and time inside the 1st Dead show that she had off...she never showed, but we did find at that time and place some good friends from the home world of SD, and so on...
Poplar Creek Rocked
I loved this place. Although it's not Alpine Valley. It still had pretty good acoustics and a nice pavillion. This was a fun show from what I remember with a really rocking Sugaree & Scarlet Fire! Jer's voice sounds a bit worn probably due to it being the end of the tour but they jammed!
Wow, first show. My first
Wow, first show. My first rock concert and first time "getting on the bus" at the same time, can't get expeienced any better than that. Don't know how many cheap car speakers I blew with this early bootleg, and my left ear. It's hard to believe all this incredible digital history, after so many hundreds of hours of poor quality cassettes back in the day.The V.W. retired with a quarter of a million miles, but the light still shines in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
See you all in digi-space!
BARRY MANILOW night b4
Love the comment above about the night before these shows were to start. We also got into town the day before and we actually grabbed a few tickets and went in to see the BARRY MANILOW show. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh the look on the local Lady's faces to see a few dead heads partying it up at the Manalow show. We got older couple very stoned and had a pretty fun night from what i remember. It was either stay outside and party or go into the show.WE decided maybe the police would be on to us so we went in. Great shows here also. Both nights were of the charts. then off to Ventura. Which were good but not as good as these 2 shows or the Frost for the matter
