    June 18 - June 24, 2007
June was always busy month in the Grateful Dead’s touring schedule, and we once again cover more than 20 years of recorded music.

Our first selection this week is this long Lovelight from 6/20/69 at the Fillmore East. In an ideal world, there would be nice 7.5 ips reels of this show (and this tour, really), but all that exists in the vault are cassette masters. But, there was some great music played on this tour, so although it doesn’t sound quite as good as a reel master, the music certainly can be appreciated. A unique element of this Lovelight is that, after Jerry seemingly has some guitar troubles (broken string?), he picks up his acoustic guitar and offers what must be one of the only, or perhaps the only, acoustic guitar solo in the middle of Lovelight.

Moving forward a few years, to 6/24/73 in Portland, Oregon, is the second set jam of Dark Star>Eyes of the World>China Doll, a perfect 1973 jam. This little summer tour of 1973 (Vancouver on 6/22 through to Universal Amphitheatre on 7/1) is often overlooked due to the magnificent quality of the February-April shows, and the October-December 1973 run of perfection, but there was plenty of excellent music played on this short tour. We’ll be bringing you more of this tour next week, as it certainly contains a few shows that deserve greater recognition.

We’ll next jump ahead to 1985, to Alpine Valley. This version of Keep on Growing demonstrates the tape quality limitations of many 1980s-era soundboards, specifically a not-too-good mix. This problem is often different venue-by-venue, as evidenced by this jam from the next show in Cincinnati on 6/24/85, Samson and Delilah>He’s Gone>Smokestack Lightning>Cryptical Envelopment. These 1985 audio clips are from the Beta PCM digital masters, which often have quite severe drop-out issues, as evidenced by the drop-out in Samson and Delilah (the Iko Iko that preceded Samson and Delilah was plagued with drop-outs and was unusable here; on another note, we’ll be sure to bring you the post-Space portion of the Cincinnati show in the future to complete the Cryptical sequence). We’ll have some Alpine 84 material in a couple of weeks that sounds excellent; it goes to show, you don’t ever know…

In 1989, the band played the well-known Summer Solstice pay-per-view show, but what often falls under the radar is the middle-night of this Shoreline run, 6/19/89. From that great show is this Stuck Inside of Mobile (with the Memphis Blues Again)-Bird Song first set sequence. These were the first shows recorded on multi-track tape in preparation for Without A Net, and although no parts of these shows were included on Without A Net, it’s good to know that first-cabin 24-track tapes of these Shoreline shows exist.

A year later, the band was at Autzen Stadium in Eugene sharing the stage with Little Feat. As anyone who was there will remember, these shows began at 12 noon, and ended around 5 PM, allowing concert-goers to go for a nice meal after the shows, perhaps a canoe ride down the river beside the stadium, catch a movie, and be back at the Red Lion by 11 PM. This was also the run where Bill Graham read a quote from stage from the Eugene Chief of Police along the lines of “I’d rather work eight Grateful Dead concerts than one University of Oregon football game.” From these shows is the second set closing jam of The Wheel>I Need A Miracle>Morning Dew on 6/23/90.

Much had changed a year later, specifically the addition of Bruce and Vince on keyboards. From 6/22/91 in Chicago is the show opening Hell In A Bucket-Shakedown Street, with Jerry in particular having a blast during Shakedown Street, evidently having fun with the MIDI effects on his guitar.

From Deer Creek on 6/23/93, here is one of the nicest little Lazy River Roads. This song is certainly under-represented on official releases, so we wanted to make sure you had a good one to check out.

Lastly this week is another taste of 5/5/78 in New Hampshire by popular demand. This second-set closing sequence of Not Fade Away>Stella Blue>Around and Around is typical of the era, which is to say somewhat predictable, but very inspired. Complete with reel-flip, to retain the authenticity of the master reels.

Come back next week to hear a bit more of the aforementioned summer tour of 1973, some cool jams from 1984, 1985 and 1987, and a quirky piece from 1969. Feel free to write with questions, comments, suggestions or requests.

    Thanks
Glad to see the new comments section. I look forward to seeing where the discussion goes. Love to see one of the rare Playin'>Uncle John's>Morning Dew>Uncle John's> Playin' sets on here. Thanks David, for all that you do. See you at Jerry Day in SF?

    Great picks this week. I
Great picks this week. I sure would love to hear the vault copies of 6/26-28/87 Alpine shows. Even if the quality is sub par, I would be the most Grateful person on the forum. Thanks for Eugene '90, Shoreline '89 and Chicago '91 (I was there)!!!!

I know everyone was always nuts over Hampton and Richmond, but some of the Landover shows smoked! My favorite Landover show is 3/20/90, the third night of that four night run. The Rooster from that first set was remarkable.

Yes, I'm new here but what else can I say but this gets better every week. This selection is a true historical top to bottom for a casual fan like me. BTW, I have discovered archive.org through this site (oh yeh, thx again). Speachless, really. Thank you to the .net but more importantly to Bob, Phil, Bill and Mickey. I never got to see a show, but have listened on bended ear for 25 years. Your generosity in providing this music free shall be remembered throughout the annals of time. It cannot be overstated.

On June 23rd, 2007 steveshutt said:how do I downlaod to a file I put on my ipod? is there a fee? if so fine I would like to download these I'll assume you are not using a MAC. Right click on the song you want to download and then select "Save Target As...". A window will open allowing you to save the file to the location of your choice. I suggest you create a folder in your My Music folder where you can put the songs. When you are done downloading, open iTunes and click on "Add Folder to library" under the "File" menu. Navigate to the folder containing the downloaded songs and click OK. The songs will be imported into iTunes and, assuming you have iTunes set up to keep your music organized (It is the default, so unless you changed it that is how it will be) it will move the songs from the folder you put them in to your "Grateful Dead" folder under a new Folder called "Taper section". Good luck. If you get confused, listen to the music play! ChinaRider

I look forward to this section each week also. I really expected to see a lot of long jams from '76 shows posted as there were for '77 but it is passing almost unnoticed and unmentioned. Why aren't they being posted? It was never stated that they are not in the vault, not much has been said about that tour at all.

The lack of mentioning 74 on here and a person commenting on why no 74's led me to highlight this terrific show of many during the month of June. The only Let it Rock performed by the band and a wonderful Dark Star > Spanish Jam > US Blues. Not too mention the wonderful Weather report suite into China Doll. This is one of my favorites for many reasons. My 1st copy I swore you could hear bottles clinking in the background.

So glad I opened one of those dead.net emails and poked around a bit. It's great to see all this great, historical music coming out. I've always loved that Cincinnati show, and as for the long stretch from Portland, that's what it's all about. I love that break at the end of Eyes. I agree with others that '74 is a cool year. There's a Louisville show that I love. Anyhoo, keep it up David.

While 6/22/85 wasn't my first show, this was the night I "got it." TREMENDOUS second set. I'd love to hear a soundboard - FOB audience matrix of this evening...it is worthy of such attention. The Lost Sailor > Saint > Drums is GREAT. The crowd energy, notably absent from the soundboard recordings, really shows how hot this show was. The crowd was into it big time. Ah, Summer 1985...not a bad evening the entire tour. The Kesey show mentioned above is 10/31/91. Excellent soundboards are plentiful in the serious trading circles. Here's another vote for 10/8/81 Copenhagen. The Space > Not Fade Away is outta site. I think a Europe '81 compilation box set would be an interesting product to offer...it was a very solid tour, and some nights (10/4, 10/8, 10/16, 10/19) were really over the top. I don't know if anything from that tour has been officially released before...has it? Thanks for everything you give us, Andy...it is all VERY appreciated.

David i wander into my office and usually crank up a few little nugs that you have so kindly layed out for all of us and it helps take the sting out of the stress that any day can bring in my biz....the music also helps keep my head shape in check! As for the requesite request, can you dig up any of the fall run of '89? Miami or Atlanta that run were particularly fun....

Thank you David, for the tasty nuggets, The "JurassicBlueberries" Wishlist includes: 1978-11-24 The Dead Head's Show from The Capitol Theater in NJ (only the entire show complete with professionally recorded Video on DVD) I have a spot right next to my Farewell to Winterland DVD for when I retire to my desert Island. Addtionally I believe that the Scarlet Begonia's->Fire On The Mountain from 1978-09-02 Giant's Stadium from the Sound Board would make a nice treat. Oh Yes, thank you for the 1973-10-23 Dark Star->Eye's Of The World->China Doll From Portland, Oregon it's great !!! Smile, Smile, Smile, Peace, Love and Massive JurassicBlueberries
