Great Night
The show was very solid, if not spectacular.
Two great memories. First, taking a loaded (pun definitely intended) school bus up from SUNY Binghamton with a bunch of fellow Heads. Don't know how the driver made it there and back.
Second, strolling outside the venue when a limo pulls up. Out comes Jerry with a huge grin, shakes my hand, and goes through the stage door.
Stunning Drum Duet
This was one of the best shows for this venue. The most memorable part of this show was the drum duet between Eyes and Lost Sailor - absolutely stunning. Eyes was a disappointment for me because they played it like they were on speed as opposed to superlative jazzy rythmic version.
Only in Utica
Back in the early 80's few venues in the East sold beer at shows. That probably was not such a bad thing in retrospect. In Utica, however, the venue just rolled kegs randomly into the hallways, tapped them and started selling beer. Only in Utica!
As for the show, what a first set. This was one of those nights for me that the 1st set shone over the second set. I don't know what it was (maybe I was hearing too many Sailor>St's in that period), but the first set just crackled with energy while the second set just seemed workmanlike. I agree too the that the Eyes was wayyyyy too fast that night. Now where is the sbd of that first set?
Insane, incompetence and jackboots
Maybe it was the beer. But i recall rollin' into town, w/o tix, being told all damn day to stand in line (it was freezin') that ticket sales would be forthcoming. Then about 4:00 they announced, no tickets and sicced jackbooted horsecops on us to get out. They were mean bastards. People freaked and started destroying the place, which was not cool. But it did open a jagged hole in a window large enough to launch my horizontial self through. Just in time to hear the boys play an inspired-by-the-events Cold Rain & Snow into a mighty S&D. A wild time that night.
100 shows later
I saw a ton of shows in the '80's & 90's and few, if any, equaled the sheer energy of this one. I have yet to find a truly good recording but it doesn't matter. The playing shines through and Utica Aud is a great little venue.
utica 81
First thing traveled from syracuse to utica in my brothers 68 impala when they opened the one door to get in their was a surge and i was carried in by the crowd almost crushed to death show was flat years later i find out jerry was a junkie so yhat explains that, left for home in a typical central ny blizzard rip m riley.
