Calaveras County, what is up with you?
First the good news: the music was fabulous. The sound check was really nice and the late night all star jam was great. So many people playing together! For me the high-light was Jorma and Jack playing with Bobby, and finishing off the Friday evening in a fine fashion. Saturday and Sunday were also really good, with my favorite set of the weekend being Hot Tuna (I've been listening to Jack and Jorma since 1977, and the Dead only since 1982, so I'm a pretty big Hot Tuna head). My favorite set was the Friday night sound check. It'll probably show up on the internet archive soon. The art display was really great, also. We had a really good time inside the show. Now for the bad news: ridiculous quantity of Sheriffs present, a select few of whom used an excessive amount of brutality in carrying out their duties. We were actually witness to people who were targeted by police because they appeared to be high, who then reacted badly, giving the cops an excuse to try to arrest them and beat them in the process. I am not talking about people being caught in a criminal act, but people just being high and a bit out of it. For a choice bit of slanted reporting everybody should check out this web site:http://thepinetree.net/index.php?module=announce&ANN_user_op=view&ANN_i…. It's nice to know what people really think of us, and that of course lies are always expedient if you want to color an event to your advantage. I would like to know who was in charge of running this event, because they did the worst job I've ever seen, and I work security and parking at many Northern California events. It was the biggest amateur hour I've ever seen by event staff. As I half expected would happen, everything fell apart logistically as soon as masses of people started arriving, early, before the noon check in. Anyone at all, with or without a ticket was let into the initial lot. There was not management of the traffic or parking, with no instructions given to the attendees about proceedure or anything like that. Naturally, under those conditions chaos quickly ensued, and in order to handle a situation the parking/security staff was completely unprepared to deal with, and to get people in smoothly, everyone was let into the campground, whether you had a ticket or not. Honestly, at first I didn't care: share and share alike is my motto. But after 3 carloads of ticketless, drug-dealing tweekers settled in next to us for an all-weekend fight fest of nasty, loud bickering and whining and fighting, I began to think: this really sucks. There were tons of ticketless youth in the camping area, many of them brought their dogs, and it was obvious none of them were prepared to buy their way in, or even be nice to hang around, much less have to camp next to for three day. I think the police brutality and heavy handedness would have been a lot less if these people, who are users, not contributors, had been kept out of the camping areas. Some of these shit-kicking youth are very belligerent about their perceived right to a free everything, and they feel they can do what they like with impunity. Regardless, it's too late for my feelings regarding the fascist police there, and it'll be a cold day in hell before I ever go to Calaveras County again. Anytime there is a show at any County Fair Grounds, I expect somewhat of a police presence, but I'm proud to say that where I'm from here in NorCal, the cops are human, gentlemen, and appreciate us mellow hippies, and the money we bring into their community. For what it's worth, I only saw the youth being targeted, maybe there is some kind of vendetta, or maybe they think us old folks have all gone to the devil, and are beyond saving. I will say frankly that I don't at all like the attitude of some of the nastier elements that frequent the lot, not intending to enjoy music or each other at all, but just to exploit the scene for their own ends. And my boyfriend stepped in dog shit while we were loading the car, to boot. Love the boys, love the band, love the music, love the Deadheads and all my friends, known and unknown; but who was in charge of this logistical fiasco, I'd love to know. Peace.

    Thank You Deadheads...Mountainaire...
...the shows were great. The band played with intensity and the usual virtuosity and get tighter with every show they play. I thought Joe Russo was driving fantastic and Chimenti is truly a keyboard master. Larry Campbell on fiddle added to the mix and the back ups. I'm a Hot Tuna fan and dug their set too. For this oldtimer the thing that really impressed me outside of the wonderful long shows and the musical alchemy trip, was the scene, the vibe and the crowd. Deadheads, young and old continue to keep it sooo cool. They are the best fans/people in the world. My wife and I had as much fun grooving on the great vibes people put out. It was as good as it gets and reminded me of a bygone era that doesn't really seem bygone.. and that just keeps my faith intact. It was also very cool to see Zane Kesey and the new Bus on site. Phil doing Q and A's was fun too and the folks that brought their kids made it all the better. My two daughters ages 36 and 41 also attended with their husbands. May the Grateful Dead and Prankster family grow strong and prosper and may this new generation (40 year olds and younger) continue to take it furthur...you all just rock and keep the bus rolling on. Nice going. I'm very impressed and still feel great. Thanks again. P.S. I did see a couple of freakouts and bummers which is sad but always bound to happen. I saw one poor girl being carried out screaming. I'm not sure if she was freaking out or just hated the music. So.. remember kids...Trip Responsibly. It's not a gut check or a competition to see how fucked up you can get. It's supposed to be a consciousness raising thing...and also remember...Once you get the message, you can hang up the phone. Just ask any Wharf Rat. Onward, through the fog... All love to all that you love.

I am sad to hear of the departure of Jay Lane as I have not had the chance to hear Furthuer Yet. I did read rhat there will be no new Drummer added from Phil himself on a thread on the phil zone. Wish I could make Mountain Aire 2010. I was at the 1987 event when Carlos played Both nights with the Dead. I was in the front right in front of Santana." Never had such a good tome in my life before". It's a great spot!!I will catch Further in Vermont on my birthday. First Dead related birthday show in almost 30 years on the bus. See y'all there!

will apparently be leaving furthur for a new job with primus. phil says (on thread at philzone) that he and bobby "are of one mind" that they will continue onward with only russo. i think this is a good choice. jay will be missed from the band to be sure, but anyone who saw that second set at the birthday with russo solo on the kit knows, this guy can handle the job, alone, and then some. he plays with ferocity and finesse in perfect equal measure, and he is so talented that he already seems like he's been playing these dead tunes for years. russo is great. my first immediate thought was what a bummer to be losing the classic GD four hand mania in the rhythim section. then i thought about it some more, and listened to that second set from the birthday again, and i realized the truest, most classic GD - going back to '67 - was a single drummer operation. billy k moored that band to the planet in their first years, before the appearance of mickey. and then subsequently during the mickey "hiatus." he and they were simply amazing in that format. furthur with only russo could be even closer to the "roots" of this whole, blessed thing. god be with you jay as you move on, and stay tuned for the new streamlined one-drummer furthur - russo has the fire power to do this, and bobby and phil being "of one mind" on the issue speaks volumes. Dude, Primus is not a friggin bad gig....that band is absolutely amazing and innovative. Les Claypool totally hast the Dead Family vibe (even with the difference in style of music) as proven by the countless appearances with many of the family's bands. I'm really stoked to hear that Primus is coming back again anyway!!! Gotta love those Bay Area blue collared tweakers! _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? We have a Ford EconoLine 350, a camper conversion that is 18 feet long. We're wondering if our vehicle will be turned away from the festival. It's a camper rather than an RV. Anyone have a proper email address of phone number where I can inquire about this? Thank you!

Jimmy Row Good question....I too am searching for the contact email/phone regarding questions about vending/camping/volunteering/etc. and it seems that the email they give under the Vending Questions email: info@mountainairefestival.com is not a valid email address. Any ideas? I tried sending a not to furthurmorefriday@furthur.net but have not had a response yet. _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? Thanks for your response, canyon critter...yeah, I also sent an email to the info@mountainairefestival.com address, and it failed. I'm going to try contacting an RV spot located next to the festival site and see if they have any information on how the folks handle such situations when a festival rolls into town. If I have any information from them, I'll let you know. Do you know of a "contact us" email address from the Furthur site?

Thanks Canyon Critter.....I have seen the FAQ and I understand the open flame rule I guess, but I don't understand the rules regarding bringing booze onto the camp site. They have ar vague !! Can we bring our own booze to camp with??? No one expects us buy 12 dollar beers for 3 days do they?? That would be very UN-DEAD-LIKE to make this festival all about MONEY !!!!

Does that mean no campstoves...or just no campfires or BBQ's? As far as alcohol sold on site...we have to be able to BYOB, right? Case of beer from Bevmo=$ Case of beer from vendor=$$$$$ "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery...none but ourselves can free our minds"

We have been wondering exactly the same thing "playdead" I guess we can connect an electric stove to our car lighter or lets be honest....I can live on PBJ sandwiches all weekend but the beer is a serious issue and it would be really unkind if they made us spend a crap load of cash just to have a good time.......

Acutally I totallly underderstand the no open flame thing....I mean some of my best friends are from home (california) and fight forest fires. Obviously, it's a severe danger. They will be selling food there, but darn it what if I want a grilled cheese? I wonder if they mean you can use any camp stove....I'm assuming open flame means any flame, but they should clarify this. As far as beer....I'm thinking unless you bring a busload of ice and Sierra Nevada, I'm sure, in fact almost positive you can BYOB....I mean how am I gonna make enough money to survive on the summer tour??? no grilled cheeses and no kind brewskies? lol Honestly, I ain't gonna pay $14.50 for a lame veggie burrito, just because I'm hungry. Also, I wonder what the rule is on leaving the campsite to visit friends and family outside of the venue? I know of some places that won't allow you to leave. Come on Boyz...we love you but us grilled cheese eatin, trash and litter pickin' uppin', freakin hippies need to know every detail...please be more specific Furthur! _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? Yes.....I am with you Canyon Critter. I am so ready for this festival. The shows I saw in Frisco on new years and the one in Portland this month were off the hook and the boyz were amazing. This one is going to take the cake, but I have never been to any type of dead festival + camping before and I just want to make sure that before I drive up from Long Beach that I know what I am walking into regarding certain things....thanks to the feedback from you and "playdead" I feel better that I am not alone with my questions.....very cool!! Please post whatever you find out and I will see you in May......I will be the guy driving the truck full of ice and Sierra Nevada ha ha lol Come over say hello and have a beer....."Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hands." The Furthur summer tour is only from 6/25 to 7/11 and all on the east coast (except for memorial day MT Aire Fest). It gets hot and sticky in the east during the summer! How about shinin that headlight through the cool Coloradah Rain . . . w/ a big fat run at RED ROCKS! Oh yeah, and lets have one of those Red Rocks shows be a matinee! That'd be hummdinger!
