Grateful Dead

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Hello and welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’ll tidily cover a decade of live Grateful Dead, from 1972 to 1982, with a little stop in 1979 along the way.

Our first stop this week is in Sacramento, CA, on 8/12/72, where the Grateful Dead would play one of their typically hot mid-1972 concerts (ah, heck, might as well scrap the “mid”…). From the second set, we have the big jam featuring He's Gone>The Other One>Black Peter>The Other One>Truckin', a little unique for both the split Other One (split by a Garcia ballad, that is) and the ending tune of Truckin’, which was usually a jumping off point for the big jams of 1972. Regardless, it’s still pretty darn cool.

Jumping ahead seven years plus one day, to 8/13/79 at McNichols Arena in Denver, we have the pre-Drums sequence from that mighty fine show, featuring I Need A Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin', He's Gone>Other One. These were some of the final concerts Betty recorded, and they sure do sound great. As you may recall, the band was scheduled to play three nights at Red Rocks, but after the first show at Red Rocks, 8/12/79, the band had to move things indoors for the final two nights due to the weather.

Lastly this week, we’ll stop by the final show of the 1982 summer tour, on 8/10/82 in Iowa City, with the end of the second set, Iko Iko>Truckin'>Stella Blue>Sugar Magnolia. It’s always nice to hear these Iko Ikos out of space.

There were a few songs repeated in this week’s Tapers’ Section, but as they were within jams, we hope you don’t mind. We sure don’t.

Next week we have music from 1968 and 1990, so don’t miss it. Some great stuff coming up. We welcome and encourage your questions or comments to the Tapers’ Section, at the address below.

Why wasn't 8/10 chosen for Dick's Picks?

Granted, the Alpine show was good, but I was really surprised that the superior Iowa City date was passed over. I'm sure there were criteria I'm unaware of.

HE'S GONE

He's Gone
Lyrics By: Robert Hunter
Music By: Jerry Garcia

Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb
You know better, but I know him

Like I told you, like I said
Steal your face right off your head

And now he's gone
Now he's gone, Lord he's gone
He's gone
Like a steam locomotive rolling down the track
He's gone, gone, and nothing's gonna bring him back
He's gone

Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride
Hot as a pistol but cool inside

Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile

Going where the wind don't blow so strange
Maybe off on some high cold mountain range (note 1)
Lost one round but the price wasn't anything
A knife in the back and more of the same

Same old
Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb
You know better, but I know him

Like I told you, like I said
Steal your face right off your head

Ooh, nothing's gonna bring him back
Ooh, nothing's gonna bring him back
Ooh, nothing's gonna bring him back

I NEED A MIRACLE EVERYDAY

NOTHING LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD SUMMER TOUR!! WHAT GREAT DAZE THOSE WERE INDEED!! OMG, I SO WISH THOSE DAZE WERE STILL HERE, COULD USE A SOME GOOD BONE SHAKIN AT ALPINE VALLEY WITH THE GOOD OL GRATEFUL DEAD!!!

I Need A Miracle
Lyrics By: John Barlow
Music By: Bob Weir

I need a woman 'bout twice my age
A lady of nobility, gentility and rage
A splendour in the dark, lightning on the draw
Who'll go right through the book and break each and every law

I got a feelin'
And it won't go away, oh no
Just one thing and I'll be OK
I need a miracle every day

I need a woman 'bout twice my height
Statuesque, raven-tressed, a goddess of the night
A secret incantation, candle burning blue
We'll consult the spirits, maybe they'll know what to do

And it's real
And it won't go away, oh no
Can't get around and I can't run away
I need a miracle every day

I need a woman 'bout twice my weight
A ton of fun who packs a gun with all that other freight
Find her in a side-show, leave her in LA
Ride her like a surfer riding on a tidal wave

And it's real
Believe what I say
Just one thing that I gotta say
I need a miracle very day

It takes dynamite to get me up
Too much of everything is just enough
One more thing that I gotta say
I need a miracle every day

hmmmm.....

Can't you hear someone yell out "IKO, IKO!!!" during space?
I remember listening to the show (probably this one) and hearing the request during Space and thinking, "wow, interesting request...hardly hear any requests or even recognizable english language during Space..and IKOo f all!?!" and then....sure enough, Jerry noodles into it...I remember thinking how cool it woulda been to be that guy requesting it....talk about a lifetime memory, huh?
far out...diggin it Dave...keep on Brother.

Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."

Trifecta 1972 - 1979 - 1982

Excellent choices this week, David. I was fortunate to have been to shows in all 3 years featured this week! I really like the Sacramento Other One, in and out of Black Peter, followed by Truckin', rather than coming out of it. I was at the McNichols show on that cool rainy day in 1979, after seeing the previous day's show up the hill in Morrison. Just about all of the August '82 shows were scorchers. Can't wait to see what next week brings!

Impressions and preconceptions

1979: Going from beautiful Red Rocks to awful McTurkey Arena, even to escape torrential rain (and the stage was not well covered in those days, let alone the crowd) was such a downer that my memory of these shows is not at all positive - and that memory extends to other McNichols shows after we had been spoiled by Red Rocks. So... I am always surprised by the quality of shows such as this when I listen to them centuries later.

AS ALWAYS: THANK YOU VERY MUCH. This is a great Taper's Section for this old man.

Dark Star > Morning Dew

My internet connection to XM was dropping-out and skipping like crazy this past Saturday: what was the date of "Today in Grateful Dead History", with the featured songs Dark Star into Morning Dew? I'm guessing 10/18/74...
