Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Ahoy hoy! Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music spanning three decades (and three keyboard players).

Our first stop this week is 6/30/74 in Springfield, MA, where we have the Playing in the Band>Uncle John's Band>Playing in the Band jam, an early version of the sequence that would become quite common in the late 1980s.

Next up, from 3/10/81 at MSG in New York, we have from the first set Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Franklin's Tower > Me And My Uncle ; It Must Have Been The Roses > Little Red Rooster; Don't Ease Me In. Please be warned that there are some major feedback squeals during Half-Step, but otherwise this is from a great-sounding cassette master. As good as this show is, the night before at MSG is perhaps a wee bit better.

Finally this week, a quartet of songs from 3/11/93 in Rosemont, IL:Althea, Masterpiece, So Many Roads>Music Never Stopped. We don't play too much 1993 here at the Tapers' Section, so it's fun when we find some good tunes, of which there were plenty on the Spring Tour of '93, and get to play them for you here.

Be sure to stop by next week where we'll have more great stuff from the vault. And feel free to write to the address below with questions or comments about the Tapers' Section.

it's back!

folks, we're working on restoring the Tapers Section pages that fell into the alternate universe. Here's one of 'em. Thank you for your patience, and also to wilfredtjones in particular for a lot of legwork.

I was at 6/30... Providence

I was at 6/30... Providence was my 1st wall of sound show but this 1st set ender left me speechless for weeks. Icouldn't even listen to my (then mono) record player, it was simply inadequate. The PA looked like a purple, glowing spaceship when ya walked in & it sounded like vocals were being whispered in your ear in front of the sbd. Never heard anything like it before or since.

Great selections as always! Listening to Springfield last. Wish I was there. Looked it up in my Deadbase (IX)...what a setlist! Of course, I was only 5 yrs old, so I might not have appreciated it. Still, my first show was Springfield '85 (March), and I remain grateful, even if I did end up in jail and then the hospital. Didn't even make it to the second set, and I had tickets for the 2nd night, but I didn't make it to that one either.
Why am I grateful? Because I bounced back and saw them almost 50 times before Brent, and finally Jerry passed into the great beyond. God rest their souls. What great love and music they shared. Still blows my mind really.
Speaking only for myself...maybe I had too much too fast. I guess I feel that too much, when it comes to drugs, can lead us to a dark place, even seemingly great ones...like LSD for instance.
Gotta love it though. Peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, This was the best show I ever saw... also happens to be my FIRST Show :-) I have it on my mp3 now and remember it all very well, the feedback too... Went with 2 of my 4 older brothers and my younger sister... still have the stub from the old Garden, Red seating left side of stage... the 2nd set was killer too... Scarlet >Fire was amazing @nd set opener ...and the Encores, yes two! were awesome... (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction > Brokedown Palace.... I tear up sometimes hearing that Brokedown...it was a special night and an extra special show... I hope they release it in pristine quality some day... If someone already has it in primo quality, please let me know - iGrateful as always!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone..........

Nothin' left to do but :-) :-) :-)

I love the relentless meditations on these jams. Keith on the Rhodes, Billy fluid and jazzy, Jerry rippin' so smoothly, Phil holding it all down, and Bobby adding the accents. All the pieces to the puzzle...

Always love these deep '74 jams!!!!
