Folks, old and new, few things gladden an old mod's heart like the way you stood up for this place in past weeks.

We can pretty much count on the fact that every time there's a new release, a Dead tour or show announcement, or some Dead-related media hoopla, we're going to be swamped. Some newcomers will be long-lost Heads dying to connect. Some will be new Heads longing to connect. This, of course, is highly desirable. Welcome.

Others, as we have seen, come mainly to vent or spew venom, and having done so usually move on. I am most gratified with the way the community members, old and new, came forth to squelch this in our most recent episode (and for those just joining us and filled with morbid curiosity, I refer you to the Dead To Tour In Spring topic around the time of the presale).

Others, frankly, will be porn spammers, malware perpetrators, and other cancers on the Internet. We have had the occasional instance of a porn spammer getting through and posting in the forums, but the more usual scenario is simply creating a user profile full of heinous links. If you should have the misfortune to encounter such a situation, please bring it to our attention and we'll deal with it. Please ALSO recognize that, contrary to the shocked reaction the first time this happened, porn and malware are NOT among the features we're offering here and we do not hold with that stuff.

 Thanks and furthur!

swamped!....understatement?

there are always going to be differing opinions but i'm hoping that most of the complaints were due to frustration and not downright hatred.....thanks marye for the kind words...i for one will try harder to understand that a knucklehead is sometimes just that...thoughtless fools that have forgotten the music!!!

I'm with you johnman

I commented once during the height of the trash talk that it seemed like we were seeing infiltration of Ratdog.org posts, where things are often not kind at all. I like it better here...

Seems Like

Seems like there have been some folks out there who just don't get it. It's Ok to express your opinion but the line seems to be where you verbally blow somebody away just because you didn't agree with what they had to say. We all know that ain't cool. It's nice to have this space and it seems to be really in the spirit of Jerry and the Grateful Dead collectively. I think it certainly comes across in 99% of the posts and I hope it stays that way. Occasionally some will step over that ephemeral line. Let us try to forgive them and remember that we're all human. If it happens again and again then relegate them to the moderator's que till they get it. Mean people suck. Always have, always will.

As far as people inserting porn or malware on this site, What the F**k? Don't they a choice of a billion other sites to spew that crap. I'd like to believe that, on the net,

"This is where I'm gonna make my happy home! Happy home!"

Yep

The posts on Ratdog.org are usually brutal mainly towards the band and Bobby himself and it doesn't seem like it's just some jerk trying to get under people's skin, they really mean what they say. Is it frustration that Ratdog doesn't sound exactly like the Grateful Dead?? Uh yeah I thought that was kind of the point?? Experimentation, going down different musical avenues, that's what it is all about!

It was very clear going in that this was coming into being in a world where there were already dozens and dozens of online spots to talk about the Dead, including of course DNC, Ratdog.org, Phillesh.net but also lots of blogs and boards. And not just in the U.S. And they all had their own culture, even when the populations overlapped.

Hence the best metaphor I could come up with at the time was that this is sort of the crossroads where all the different communities intersect and folks with a lot of different cultural expectations hang out.

And, like I've said before, we've got folks who weren't born when Jerry passed, and we've probably got folks who were at the Acid Tests. We've got folks from a lot of different corners of the world, an incredible range of talents and experiences. It's a rich place and getting richer, I think, and long may it run.

As two wise doofuses once put it, "Be excellent to each other," and if we stick to that plan I think we'll be fine.

Hear, hear

to those who work to make this a better space. Which of course is and was the point all along!
Right?
And thanks to you all who make this your mission, here on this site and in your life 'off-site". Take care

On this Golden Road it has been respect for others at this site. Thank you Mary for keeping this a positive place as well as my fellow heads pkpotter, Oroboros, Tigerlilly and many others.

This has been a safe place to hang out and if the going gets weird it seems to come back to that safe place after some strange detours.

I'm Old time Deadhead

I'm old time deadHead, And I'm sorry but if people have a different opinion they usually get jumped on and thats to bad. I did voice a disappointment in the way the tickets were handled this time and was slammed on it. I will always follow the dead and will voice an opinion. I can do this without being vulger. I thought ticket master did a terrible job this time, sorry it was my opinion. I look forward to the show I was able to get tickets for, however could not obtain the other shows that I wanted to attend and that was the fault of how it was setup. Oh well at least i got a ticket for one show and will have to be happy for that. Like I said I'm looking forward to that show. Sorry if this offends anyone , it is not my intenetion.

hey culliganman...

you might want to head over to the Channel 666 topic where Ticketmaster's latest misadventure is being discussed with gusto. Let's just say you're not alone.

and to clarify

avatar

since the last time I said this is buried thousands of posts back in the tour topic: Dissent is fine. Criticism is fine. Abuse and personal attacks, not so much. In short, you are quite welcome to express your opinion as long as you don't attack or demonize other folks while doing so.

Just in case that wasn't clear. I doubt any two of us are in perfect agreement on anything.
