I graded 9/2/78 as a Very Good show (4 of 5 stars). I thought the opening Jack Straw and the pre-drums Scarlet and Eyes were the highlights. Post-drums consists of only Sugar Mag and the encore. The review in the Taping Compendium states that it is thought that Jerry was upset at being caught engaging in some illegal activity during the drums break and that was why post-drums was so short. On tape, the short post-drums doesn't bother me. I can see why it would leave a sour taste in the mind of someone who attended the show though. The August Red Rocks shows right before are not considered very good shows, but I liked 8/31 (8/30 features the first and a great If I Had the World To Give and nothing else, totally subpar show). And I grade the 3 Egypt shows as Subpar, Good and Good, respectively. As for the other shows on this vine, I thought 4/18 and 4/19 were Good, and the first set of 4/21 Very Good and second set Good. My two cents at least.

I hadn't listened to the 9-2-78 show since attending. I recalled that although it was one of my earlier shows, it was less than memorable. The boys were getting ready to go to Egypt and it felt like their hearts weren't in it. Also, the playlist was pretty standard fare for that era. I remember being disappointed especially because it was a large venue and the Riders and Waylon Jennings (who never showed up) were also billed. Anyway, after listening to the show, I feel that my memories were accurate (and considering my "condition" that day any memories should be considered surprising). It was just OK, at best. Now, the Dead at OK is better than 99% of the other shit out there, but I am curious what you guys think. Thanks again for the vine JSFC. "That path is for, your steps alone."
