The Schwag They are a fabulous GD cover band...they hold summer festivals in MO and tour throughout the midwest. Stu Allen (guitarist from JGB) just signed on to be their "permanent" guitarist. This guy's Jerry vocals are breathtaking. He truly sounds like 80's-90's Jerry....not to mention his guitar playing is phenomenal. Jerry's soul is definitely with Stu Allen. Check him out on archive.org...he also played with a GD tribute "Workingman's Ed" a lil in the past. The guy is amazing. String Cheese Incident is also a favorite of mine...although they are currently on a hiatus. Michael Kang from String Cheese also played guitar for The Schwag at a couple of Schwagstocks last year...good stuff...Bill Nershi from String Cheese also sat in for a few songs each night.

I didnt see any comments on STS9. They are one of my top five bands at present. Surprised I didnt see any thing about them on the board. They are going to do two sets at Wakarusa. Sort of electronic Dead with no vocals lol ...... peace

    Santa Barbara Cover Bands?
Anyone know of any Grateful Dead-oriented bands in Santa Barbara? Moving from Albany where I can go out once a week and see an awesome cover for $5 plus a lot of other live music in the area, so I guess I kinda took it for granted at thought of not having that available to me . I actually don't know what I'd do being able to listenin to the music play when I get confused ;-). I'd definitely love to know where to find the local heads and good music. Much thanks. ~Nasa

    theCAUSE - tonight 12/12!!!
The last time we played Moondog's in December, it was a day in Pittsburgh kinda like this one....cold, wet & snowy. We didn't think too many people would come, but wouldn't you know it? Great crowd and it was a night of pure magic! Tonight, we return to Moondog's in December on a cold, wet & snowy night and we're having our First Annual Eat-Drink-And-Be-Merry Holiday Potluck Party! If you're in the 'Burgh, come on out and bring a hot or cold dish (and enough to share!)!! Doors open at 7pm and music starts around 10pm. We have a great list of tunes on tap and BOTH lovely ladies, CHERYLANN HAWK and JILL PAONE SIMMONS will be singing with us all night. Hope to see you there! Oh, one more thing....here's the link for that cold, wet & snowy night in December '06 from Moondog's...fun stuff.... http://www.archive.org/details/theCAUSE.Moondogs.Dec02_2006 theCAUSE Friday, December 12th, 2008 Moondog's 378 Freeport Rd. Thanks for the tip. In case you missed it, there's a short documentary out on Vimeo where Stephen talks to GD historian Blair Jackson while recording for the slack project out in CA: https://vimeo.com/223074777

It's really cool seeing two GD nerds discuss the project's background. David Gans also makes an appearance.

They are obviously solid, very tight musicians. However, I found their recorded music to be almost muzac for Deadheads...excellent background music played by exceptional musicians. Luckily, I had opportunity to catch a live show, and for $20, I gave it a shot. All I can say is "Wow"...extreme energy live...very tight, almost disciplined live, but also highly creative and improvisational. They played about 2 1/2 hours non-stop with VERY impressive jams. I highly recommend their live shows.

Dave McMurray, saxophonist late of Was Not Was, has a new album of Dead covers, Grateful Deadication, which sorta came into being when he saw Weir do Days Between at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a few years back. It's very good.

I may be spoiled, but Indianapolis has an amazing band called Starcat that performs music by the Jerry Garcia Band with a lineup that resembles Jerry's classic 90's outfit.

Wanted to share this up-and-coming tribute band, Shakedown Citi, that I just saw live. The group formed last year in the Citi Fields parking lot and really have something special going on. They play a ton of show in/around NYC --- I'm especially excited for their show at Hill Country Live on Tues. Sept. 3. You should be able to find them with a quick google search-- they got active website, socials, and a link tree for upcoming gigs.
