First Show: April 17, 1989
What I remember most about this show was how I could see in people dancing in each entry-way. I was also amused to see people trying to dance to Estimated Prophet. With it's 7/4 time signature, I think it really threw people for a loop. The parking lot was also an eye-opener as this was my first of only two Grateful Dead shows. I've had a tape of this show for many years but only the second set. It was nice to find the Archives web site so I could finally own the first set. It's probably not the best show available, but since it was my first, I remember it fondly and listen to it often.
My first show as well
Dang, I was hooked from the git go by the music and the vibe inside and out of the Met Center. It took me a few shows though to get in the groove and get the right dancing shoes. So many friends, people I really care about to this day, I went with and met at this show. I realized what a small world it is too as people I'd met through other friends were also friends with those I went with to this one. A wonderful glorious experience. In hindsight, and maybe because it was my first Dead show, I give the actual concert, the music, 4 stars but all in all, a 5 star night. It just boggles my mind what took me so darn long to see my first Dead show!
quintessential Dead show of the late 80s IMO
great set list, extremely well executed. missing a Terrapin but what a set list! ended set 1 with killer Bertha and the 2nd set...every one is a home run.
after the 86 fiasco in the Dome, they really made up for it in 88 and 89 with those shows in the Met.
Bible study?
a friend of mine went to this show with me. he was a casual GD fan...knew 'em, liked 'em, but not deadicated. after Samson, he commented just how closely the lyrics followed the actual Bible story. I did not think much of it the comment at the time, but came to realize just how many Biblical stories and references are in their body of work. It seemed really obvious after I thought about it, and then it was really driven home when I received Dodd's "Annotated Grateful Dead" as a gift.Between their own songs, various covers, Dylan's covers...you can write the Gospel according to Jerry, Bob and Robert.
All these years later, it seems trite and obvious, but Paul's comment got me looking into those things.
