Robert- my 2nd show. met
Robert- my 2nd show. met Phil and he took my friends and myself to the show. backstage passes. all access did not even exist. what a nice guy. made me a fan forever. quite a second show too.
My First show
My very first Dead show at 18 years old I was in college in Souix Falls SD. Drove on over to Iowa with friends and bought a ticket for a whole $5. Stayed at the now de-funked Parsons College. Me and my buddies wandered into the end of the sound check. Phil was on the edge of the stage holding court talking about this and that and I do remember a few comments about and up and coming artist called......Michael Jackson as strange as that sounds. Garcia kept to himself they told us he was sick with a shitty cold and bumming about Pig Pen. Keith was noodling on the piano. As for the show, "I had a real good time" from what I remember!! Anyone have a tape of this show, have never found a full version.
i was a senior in high
i was a senior in high school and 4 of us drove to iowa city for the weekend and one of our friends , who was a freshman at the university of iowa said he had tickets for us. when we got there he did not have tickets.
i walked over and stood in line at around noon. they said that they would start selling tickets at 2:00 p.m. with a limit of 2 per person. ( we needed 5 ) the rest of my buddies were back at the dorm drinking beer. i stood in line and got 3 tickets. when i came back my friends drew straws for the other 2 tickets . but everyone ended up going to the show.
this was my first grateful dead show and it was great, although the iowa fieldhouse was not the greatest venue, sound wise.
11 weeks later, on mother's day 13 of us went from davenport to des moines to see the show at the state fair grounds. another great and wild day!
Didn't Know What I Was Missing
For my sixteenth birthday on 2/24/73, my older brother drove me up from Des Moines to see the show. We got high all day long with his friends and finally left for the Fieldhouse. When we got there, my brother's group began working their way up to the stage, basically stepping past and around others who'd staked out floor space. About half way in, I passed out. The next thing I remember I was laying flat on my back. I opened my eyes and some guy was standing over me. I couldn't hear him, but I could read his lips. He was asking me if I was alright. I was. Apparently the people I landed on broke my fall. I got to my feet, realized my brother and his friends were gone and made my way to the stands where I sat down with some others. As the show started, I fired one up and passed it around. Sadly, I really don't remember much of the show. It's only been recently that I bought various shows from 1973, including Dick's Picks Vol 28 with the Lincoln show from two nights later and realized what I'd missed. You live and learn, but luckily these recordings exist to remind me what a great show it was.
It doesn't show up on this set list...
But, I remember Bob singing "Knock Three Times" recorded by Tony Orlando & Dawn!
