Dave's Picks 2014 - Subscription No Longer Available - Volume 9 Coming Soon
It’s that time of year, when the Dave’s Picks subscriptions for 2014 go on sale. In 2012, the series was limited to 12,000 units of each release. Last year, we increased that to 13,000. And for 2014, you guessed it, each Dave’s Pick will be limited to 14,000 units. And just as all releases in 2012 and 2013 sold out, quickly, we expect the same in 2014, particularly with the quality of music we have planned for release. The only way to ensure you’ll receive all four releases in 2014 is to subscribe.
For those of you who can't stand the suspense, news has come in about Dave's Picks Vol. 9, the first of our four releases for next year. We're very pleased to revisit the Wall Of Sound era, with a complete show that took place on May 14, 1974, at Adams Field House at the University of Montana in Missoula, the Grateful Dead's only appearance in the state of oro y plata. This monstrously hot show is the third official show of the Wall Of Sound, which had debuted in March 1974. (You can find more details about this show in the 2013 Almanac.)
Although we haven’t mapped things out too far beyond Dave’s Picks Vol. 9, further digging through a batch of tapes returned to us in 2012 revealed more than we expected, so you in turn can plan on something excellent from the 1969-1971 era, likely something you’ve never heard. We spend months working on each and every release to make sure it’ll be something that you’ll happily hear again and again, and we’ve already got some great ideas in mind for the four releases in 2014.
Show specifics aside, no matter how you slice it, Dave’s Picks subscribers get the very best deal – four spectacular limited-edition numbered releases, free domestic shipping, and a stellar bonus disc that will arrive with Volume 10, in May 2014. The last two bonus discs have proven immensely popular, so naturally we’ll have another cool, interesting, exciting and rare treat for you in 2014.

Since Dave and company have taken over the bus do we get a box release each and every year? Is it to be expected?
Wonder if we'll hear about Volume 10 and the bonus disc before the subscription offer ends. I'll jump off the deep end and say this year's Box Set (if there is one) will be from the Bruce and/or Vince era. Or maybe a fall of 79 Box? Only a couple of weeks until Volume 9 begins shipping. A Volume 10 guess - 11/4/77 with the second set to 11/1 as a bonus, although no idea if 11/1 is in the Vault. Or one of the Waterbury 72 shows with the other show serving as a bonus.
Now, being that Missoula '74 has long been at or near the top of my list of "time-machine shows" -- the ones I want to go see when I *finally* get that dang thing built, for me subscribing is the obvious choice -- Dave may not be perfect (I say maybe!), but he's definitely tuned in to something...
...if you only want specific shows and years! (Shouldn't that be obvious?)
If you only want specific shows or years, just wait for them and strike like lightning when they are announced or you will miss them. If you do miss them, complain bitterly about the limited editions and how you're sure Jerry would have objected.
Meanwhile, of course, if you don't want what does get released, count yourself lucky: you didn't pay for what you don't want! Wise, thrifty you, you've still got your cash. Nevertheless, complain bitterly -- Why is there such an unwarranted bias against the shows/eras you think should've been released? You can't win!
subject says it all. Three great shows. Another nice 3 show run is Universal Studios June and July 73. just got the wall of sound road trips. it is great
So a la carte will be on sale 2 weeks prior to release and hopefully during that time or before the 17 we will found out what the bonus disc is.
Other music worth a listen 10-25-73 2nd set, wow.
During the Black Friday sale I bought quite a few releases I did not have. Road Trips Fall 79' great jams. and Summer 71' both very nice. Dark Star and Other One. Other purchases were Filmore West 69' compilation, and new acoustic 70 show. Plus 5-25-72. This show stood out because none of it was released on Europe 72' vol. 1 or 2. Plus it was not featured on Steppin' Out. The Playing in the Band is awesome. Really like that version, right around the 3rd minute that performance takes off. I like it as much as 8-27-72 Playin and that one is awesome. Me and My Uncle, Brokedown Palace, and Casey Jones are nice too. Have not listened to disc 3 & 4. That show has 3 Garcia sung tunes 3 in a row, Uncle Johns Wharf Rat and Dark Star. A rare treat.
On a sad note I have lost Dicks Picks 14 and 30. Hopefully they will turn up somewhere. Really loved those songs with Bo Diddley. I've Seen them All, Mona and the others. 72' is probably my favorite year too. And Dicks Picks 14 is a top 5 Dicks Picks and that is really hard to say considering out of the 36 solid releases.
On Sirius Dave has played 6-12-70 from Hawaii, I checked deadlists.com and setlist is not known and no tapes are known to circulate. The piece I heard was That's It For The Other One. A very nice bit of music. I do know 1-18-70 was also similar status and no setlist was known and tapes were not known to circulate and eventually it became part of the download series. I'm not sure what the source was for 6-12-70. Hopefully it was a soundboard from the lost tapes
Always, I mean always, call. I call whenever I place an order or, occasionally, have a return processed. dead.net always comes through for me. Karma? Whatever it is, I am GRATEFUL! Oops, I hope I did not jinx........
Hey Vguy72. Click on the third dot, on the left-hand side of the 2014 announcement above. There is a whole article about Tony Millionaire who is the illustrator who is going to do the art work this year. Enjoy.
Can't wait for the cover. It would be something if they signed on T Truman to do some more but I doubt it. Shame (sigh). Oh well, some Frazetta type artwork would do nicely though. Wink,wink....
BTW, my word verification sign in below was btchn. Frazetta would be bitchin'.
@jerryskid137>I know what you are going through with the folks at Dead.net, they will run your blood pressure up because many of them are clueless. I have been given multiple explanations for things from them. I would suggest you send Mary at PM and tell her what is happening. She has helped me get squared away before. Good luck.
@RV3, Dave said in his seaside chat to maybe expect a release from the tapes they found. Last years Bonus CD was 69, so maybe this years BD will be 80's. I really enjoyed DP8 a lot, and hope to get more of it. I suspect we will get an 80's box set this year. Only you can decide to buy or not. You can always buy after they ship and there are usually some left over. DP8 sold out super fast. I would say go for it, you can always sell the copies you don't want. They will sale!
I'm looking forward to a great year in the Deadhead world, then 2015 will bring some great stuff as well. Keep jamming.
Yea again, lots of folks have stated good points on early bird $ , and ordering....I need more info though?!?! I feel like I was somewhat suckered the first year (when I ordered subscription) with four mid-1970s releases, when I wanted four mid-1980s releases. I didn't order it last year, and was happy to get two copies of the only show I wanted DP#8. Someone needs to give a hint at what DP#10 will be & bonus disc for me to get subscription. With 8 of the 9 releases from the series being from the 1970s, I don't have confidence ordering the 2014 subscription without knowledge of at least the bonus disc..
I ordered DAP2014 at early bird price. Currently in the middle of a move and called deadnet with new address. I get email today stating that DAP2014 order has been cancelled. I immediately call deadnet to see what is up. Informed that due to changing address it triggered change in order status (accident). I was informed that it would be corrected and I was given a new reference number. Also informed that credit card on which purchased would not be billed again. I requested email confirming new reference number. On deadnet behalf they did have the new address correct. Due to previous postings about lost shipments etc I am concerned. I could place another order but dont currently have funds and don't want to waste time on ebay selling. I have ordered first 2x seasons and don't want to miss on this one. Any other suggestions besides wait for email with new reference number and then hope that order arrives to new address.
If your request indeed induced Jerry & Co. to play Dark Star, then I would like to offer my sincerest THANK YOU...to you AND the band.
story about jerry and the concert
OK, so I went to this show at the University of Montana. I was almost 21 and hitchhiking around the mountain states - I had worked in Jackson Hole and at a construction site in Gillette, Wyo., and had been looking to work at Big Sky, but my buddy Dennis Burns was helping run concerts at the U of M. Both Dennis and I had dropped out of the University of Chicago in 1973. I would drop in on him and his girlfriend Ames from time to time. Missoula was a happpening town - the clubs were full of students from Monday through Saturday, partying their ass off. Not exactly the University of Chicago. A great town, when the wind was blowing the smell from the paper plant the other direction. Anyway, Dennis tells me that he is helping set up the Dead concert that is coming into town, so I made sure to come into Missoula for that. I seem to remember that a sister of someone in the band was going to U of M, or some such reason for the Dead's appearance.
So, I stashed my stuff at Dennis's place and I'm strolling around campus on the day of the show. Suddenly, I hear from the gym the clearly recognizable tones of Jerry messing with the guitar. I just amble into the gym, with nobody blocking any door. Turns out that Jerry is doing a sound check. I had actually talked to Jerry a couple times at the Keystone Berkeley by that time (and after) and found him really approachable. I had this little card (maybe I found them at the gym) which was a replica of Jerry's second album cover (no beard), and Jerry was pretty well shaven at this concert, too. I went up to the stage and held up the card and asked him to sign it - which came over and did. I said how cool it was to hear his guitar all of the sudden when we had been listening to the Allman Brothers' New Years Eve broadcast (the Dead didn't play that year). He said, "Oh yeah, that was fun, heh hee...," with his inimitable laugh. I said, "It would be cool if you could play Dark Star tonight." I was already imbued with the fact that the Dead hadn't played Dark Star in the San Francisco area or LA for years and years, and wanted to hear it live. He said, "Oh yeah, we'll see!"
We went to the concert with a bunch of yo-yo's that lit up when you spun them. I don't remember all of it, except the soaring version of Dark Star - I hope it's on this Dave's Picks Album. I doubt the recorded version can capture what the wall of sound behind Jerry did - something I never heard before or after. Either Jerry or someone at the soundboard that night made the trippiest part of the Dark Star lead sound travel up and down his stack of speakers - starting at the bottom and going up about 30 or 40 feet and then back down again - at least 3 or 4 times. Maybe it was Owsley at the controls! Very trippy. I felt personally very cool because I'd asked Jerry for it to be played... and had never heard it live. (Just wanted to mention that I asked Jerry for songs later too, at the Keystone as he was walking through the crowd to the stage - I'd say, "Walking along in the Mission," or whatever, and he usually played what I asked. He liked pleasing people and I always thought he put real soul into stuff I asked for....
Now, of course, it isn't that unusual. I've actually heard Furthur twice in the past 13 months, and they played Dark Star both times. The last time, I was laying on the grass at the Greek in Berkeley, groking on it, when this young yahoo starts yelling in a drunken way, "Hey, what's the name of this song, what's the name of this song?" I used a lot of restraint, and said, "Dark star, it's called Dark Star." Didn't say "shut up" or "you asshole" or anything like that. Would have been bad karma. Lol. At that point, Bob starts singing Jerry's part, "Dark star crashes...." I hope it brought it together for that guy. However, I don't think he was on the right drug. He'll remain mystified by the quiet expressions around him and why people weren't....
it ended last year when it sold out ..... which was well before the first release of the year. also ,, they announced the bonus disc early as part of the info. released with the news of the lost tapes being found !! dave has also told us that there will be a release this year from those tapes ,, and we know the first release is a wall of sound show. that's 2 of the 4 right there.
> expect an 83' or 84' box
Like a run of shows, or a compilation box?
I think it's a week before DaP 9 goes on sale. You should get an email also "last chance to get your Dave's Pick's. subscription".
I would imagine the bonus disc and volume 10 would be announced a week & 1/2 or so before the period ends. To ensure last minute takers a shot at the bonus disc. If Vol. 9 is released Feb. 1 , then the a la carte copies will go on sale a week or so before to ship on time. In the next 2 weeks, we should know what is being released or by end of Jan. when Dave does another video, assuming it is the preview for 9 and info about 10.
As for other rumors, expect an 83' or 84' box and possibly a box from Fox theater Oct. 72'
For those interested on SiriusXm today is 3-2-81 and 6-24-91. When all the 81' talked had surface before Dave's 8 was announced this was a show I had my eye on because of the Shakedown Street opener. March 81' has some great stuff from Midwest to East coast to Europe.
Happy New Years to all, so many roads to ease my soul
Oh please, please, please release 11/4/77. Please.
The way I remember from last year, they announced teh bonus disc before subscrivers received the 1st disc, so (obviously) before the subscription offer expired.
The way it was announced it appeared to me to be an attempt to increase the number of subscribers: "Get the subscription, because the bonus disc is a biggie!". Commercially motivated it may have been, but they sure were right...
Really, as (I think) Coconut Phil said before: get the subscription. If a subjectively awful set is included, it's easy to sell to somebody who wants it, a no loss (or win, depending on your inclination) - win situation for all concerned.
Hope everyone has a great time tonight. I'm an old married dude with two kids. My days of howling at the moon are long over. I think we will know about the Bonus Disc in the Spring. Last year was 1969, So I'm betting on early to mid 70's. I'm sure we will see another 80's release given how fast DP8 sold out. I'm still jamming that show on my iPod shuffle, great show. We may see an 80's box set too? Who knows, I'm sure it will be awesome music as usual. Heard rumors that Road Trips will hit Amazon as downloads. That will be good for fans that missed out on the collection. A few are still available in the store, the rest are on Ebay.
I'm looking forward to all and any surprises along the way. Happy New Year Deadheads, may it bring you wealth and happiness.
When do they announce what this is? didn't they announce what the bonus disc was before the end of the year the past two years of DAves Picks?
When do they announce what this is? didn't they announce what the bonus disc was before the end of the year the past two years of DAves Picks?
there was something about texas shows that brought out the best in the band all the way back to 71 ... some of the best playin' songs i ever heard !
The harder they come, Mississippi moon, and forever young were a couple of my favorites so far. Gomorrah and Don't let Go we're nice too
Just received Jerry Garcia Band Long Island Sound box set.that's the way box sets should be.no limited editions, compact and affordable.
this new box set is great listening-both performance and sound. I attended Hartford show so this brings back some memories for me as well. Thank you PTB.
Listened to 1st set so far and Garcia sounds awesome on They Love Each Other. His playing and equipment make the sound very rich & thick. That version makes others seem very flat. And the Deal is very noteworthy. At one point I didn't realize when I was driving I was listening to Deal. Even though I knew it was the last song of the set. That jam took off out of nowhere. I had a to search around to find that box set, all big retails did not carry and my go-to record store did not order. He recommended another RS in Columbus and he didnt have either. Turns out another record store I had never been to had it and they even had a few of the last Dicks Picks 30 and above. Plus some other nice releases on vinyl DP6. He tossed in a sheet of Spring 90 stickers, not sure if that came with box set. I don't think it did. It's all the cover arts.
Can't wait to hear what's next. May 74' Wall of Sound is for sure as DP9. DP10 ?? Plus bonus disc I think is going to be Dec. 69. Not sure why but Dec. 11-12 stick out. In between 9 and 10 another box set will probly come out and 80's should be it. 83' or 84'. Or even 81'.
If its not an 80's box my best guess is Fall 72' most likely from October or November. Fox Theater in St. Louis or Oklahoma/Texas run
Yes this a nice sounding pkg. Listening to the 1st show now, Bob & Rob is just clear as a bell. I love Bobby playing acoustic. JGB is also crystal clear, Jerry's voice very soulful. If you didn't order this, better ask Santa for it.
Edit >Rhino to release E72 & Road Trips shows on MP3s in 2014
Looks like Spring'90 shows & Dave's Picks could be next.
Listening back to the entire show and, man, it's really good. A couple of things made the second Road Trips but man, some of these October shows are better (imho) than a lot of the Spring ones. Here's hoping we get some full releases from that tour.
has been in many cases featured on Tapers Section and Jam Of The Week. If you want to have an OMFG-it's-all-free-and-for-me moment (and who doesn't in this world?), google up an indexed list of the Tapers Section. Incredible abundance (what's left to put out?, one might ask after a glance), even after you net out the many repeats. For me, I see holy grail type things such as the Academy of Music '72 bonus disc and other stuff left off the Dicks Picks, the '75 appearances, and the 2nd set gold from 10/16/74. And much more. Didn't know until the other day that most of 4-25-77 can be pieced together from the TS.
Thanks claney. Yeah, Packers fan in Michigan with the Bears as the local market (SW Michigan). So, I get drunken Lions fans. My last trip to watch at the local watering hole left me never wanting to go again. We sat next to a fellow Packers fan who thinks he should be head coach of the Packers, but good grief the bad ideas he has. I went with my visiting father, who when we sat down commented, "Lucky us, two seats together." I quickly found out why they were vacant!
I received the JGB-Weir release in the post yesterday. Sound is quite good and only working my way through the first set of JGB first night-- this is a stellar release. The band is in fine form-- haven't even gotten to what is reported as monumental versions of Deal. Can't wait to hear a later version of Lonesome and a Long Way From Home and the Weir sets, too. Really good release at a great price. This is a tour I had the opportunity to see at Alpine Valley, but wasn't able to do it. Alas....
Are more than 15 hours of (superb) material.
You might want to try and snag any ones you're lacking, because when this MP3 set arrives it will probably renew interest in those "missing" tracks, sending the prices back up...
Estimated-Eyes - I agree totally, love the NFL Ticket analogy. I live in western Mass, but I'm a Chief's fan - I would gladly pay to see a Chief's game (and I'd gladly pay to "fill some holes" in my collection). Being at a bar surrounded by drunk Jets fans is not always pleasant, hehe...
Interesting about the complete Road Trips coming out. My hope is that they will also release them ala carte. From a marketing perspective, I think they would sell many more individual release compared to how many they will sell as an all or nothing. Many of us have a lot of these already and may have holes to fill.
This is like the NFL Ticket to me. I would gladly do a pay-per-view (up to $20 per game) to see the five games that are not shown locally of my favorite team. I will not, however, shell out hundreds of dollars for the NFL Ticket so I have access to 250 games, of which only 16 really interest me. I think the NFL would do better that way, but maybe bars and restaurants don't want that ease of access.
That said, I am glad they are getting them out in some form.
I guess we all should not be surprised that Rhino wants to sniff out a few more bucks from Deadheads. I could see the mp3 coming out for sure, but a box set? It would be nice, many would buy it. I have the entire collections and all the Bonus CDs like many others. Guess we never know what's coming around the next corner. I am glad that the downloads will be available to all that want it. New generations of Deadheads are coming along and will have access to all the great music out there.
Well it doesn't include the bonus discs as far as I can see from the list on the Amazon link ...
Complete Road Trips MP3 will come out on January 14, 2014. Take a look >
P.S. Also stated ; This album will be available on March 11, 2014.
Our guess is as good as theirs.
IMO....RT 4.3, 4.4 = 5 Star shows! Get 'em if you don't got 'em while they found a few more, deep down, in the bowels of the warehouse.
Directly above these posts, at the bottom of the right-hand column, it clearly states: *Please note that your card will be charged at the time you place your order.
From what I remember reading, your CC will be charged at the time you place the order. I'm not 100 % on that, but fairly sure. It's a great deal.
got daves 2014 on the 27th, was told my card ould be authorized, then fall off after 3 to 7 days and billed when shipped, like usual, well charge is still on my card and now have been told it is not falling off and i wont be billed again when shipped, anyone else have this problem??? thenx
Yes, a few are back in stock. I lucked up during the 20% sale and found a few copies of Vol.2 NO.2, I ordered two copies, and two copies of Vol.4 NO 2. They both had been listed as sold out. Today I found Vol.4 NO.4 in stock. Got some for my archive box. Now some read "Backordered" if you try to place an order. I did not order any of those. Better get them while you can if you need some for your collection. Jerry's site has a few of the Pure Jerry in stock. Hope everyone has a nice holiday season.
Some that were sold out for the last year are now available to add to shopping cart,, is this a website error ? Or really back in stock?? If so, the Denver 73 show is top of my list. as I have a few others and on Black Friday I ordered Fall 79' and Summer 71' .. Only listened to 79' and I really like that compilation
a release from the old tapes w/ a bonus disc would be my first choice,,yes !!!!!
a release from the old tapes w/ a bonus disc would be my first choice,,yes !!!!!
please send me a PM with the details and I'll see if we can resolve this better. Sorry for all the hassle.
, 2014 subscription has been ordered. Also heard 4-26-71 sugar mag with Duane Allman. Sounded great to hear him and Garcia trade licks. The release Ladies and Gentlemen filmore east closing has all nights except the 26, so this could be a candidate for release. I do believe this show has a Dark Star as well.
On another note 12-6-73 Row Jimmy and China > Rider well worth a listen. And December 3-5, 1979 has some nice stuff as well.
