[View from the Vault I] - In 1995, the Grateful Dead played the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, MO. The Summer of Death tour wasn't over yet. Several people were injured the night before at a campground. A thunderstorm sent everyone scurrying for cover. Too many people crowded onto an elevated deck and it collapsed.

This was a great place to experience the dead. I caught five shows there; 77, 81, 82, 83, 85.I loved the outdoor shows, no echo. I could almost picture the notes skipping off over the hills, running free. I'm sure they are still out there; frollicking in the morning dew.

The only regrets I have in life are those things that I did not do. The Oxford Plains Speedway shows are at the top of the list. And the fact that today happens to be the first day I look at this “Today in the history of GD” and it just so happens to be on that fateful day in ‘89. I was supposed to go, had a ticket, was ready and waiting. This was to be my first Dead show. My older cousin got me a ticket, as well as one for my older sister who was to go as my ‘babysitter’ since I was only 13; this was the only way my parents would let me go. To make a long story short my sister made the decision not to go (that B*tch!). Anyway, I had to wait till the following summer to see them for the first time. I have always been upset about this since they were phenomenal shows. (I haven’t let my sister forget it either, and she now regrets it as well! lol) I was thankful that my neighbor was able to get me the tapes of the show within a week but …..the dead were never allowed to come back to Maine, and I feel that I missed something really special. So, I hope you all who had the good fortune to attend it treasure your memories because from everything I’ve heard (tapes and personal stories) it was definitely one to go down in the history books of great shows. Cheers!

This show at the Music Hall was my 2nd: I gave my ticket to a friend who was wanting to see what I was raving about, after experiencing the 3-set extravaganza, in Boulder, on 9/3/72. Check out the Truckin' > Nobody's Fault jam > Dark Star > Sugar > Sing me Back Home sequence, with One More Saturday Night to send us out the door...

Listening to this great 1971 show, containing a Dark Star in the 1st set! Celebrating our first snow of the season in Kansas in anticipation of some good college football games today: Go Jayhawks, Go Wildcats, and further west, Go Buffs!!! Will Stanford upset USC ? Can the Gamecocks contain the Gators??

It was 35 years ago today that Pete and I rode the red VW bus into Louisville from Oxford. I don't think the show was sold out, but then again we were right up front, sometimes leaning on the stage in front of beardless Jerry, enjoying one of the best shows in Grateful Dead history. Thanks to the band for a real good time.

My International Travel All pulled into Red Rocks, full of Louisiana Deadheads, to witness the first visit of the band to Morrison, CO. Jack Straw was the opener of the 1st set, while Cold Rain & Snow led off the 2nd! Maybe someday David Lemieux will slip some of this 2-day run into the weekly Tapers Section!!

back on 8/3/82 in beautiful Swope Park. The entire show was as hot as the evening temp. The 1st set just smoked. Check the live music archive for a listen, especially the Shakedown leading into the 2nd set. I had just received my R.I.F. (lay-off) notice the week before, during the first Reagan recession....

that the Beatles played their last show, at Candlestick Park. You might not think this has to do with the Dead so much, but it figures prominently in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. I wasn't there. But I was at Dodger Stadium the night before.

This is the only day where I'd been to 2 Grateful Dead shows: 1972 was my first show, a 3 set gem in Boulder with free pot, a rain storm, and a Rockin' Pneumonia. All this for a $3 ticket! 13 years later at Starlight Theater in Kansas City's Swope Park, it was hot and humid. The 2nd set opened with Crytical Envelopement and encored w Baby Blue. The Oade brothers made a wonderful audience recording that may be obtained from www.archive.org. Do check it out! Today on XM Sirius, David Lemieux features a piece of history with some great tunes from the Elizabethtown, NJ 9/3/77 show, one I wish I had attended. Most of it is on Dick's Pick #15.

On this date in 1980, Grateful Dead played a 3 set show at the warm and cozy Saenger Theatre, in New Orleans, LA. Set 1 was acoustic, followed by 2 electric sets. A few snippets of the 2nd electric set have been brought out of the vault just this week! A tale that had been circulating indicated the recording equipment had flown from SF to NY: now we know that a soundboard exists. Dan Healy did run a cassette deck off the PA feed, according to someone familiar with what's in the Vault. Today on XM, you can hear China>Rider, Stranger, Ship of Fools, Estimated & an Eyes! This sequence is also on the featured week of 10/12-18, here on dead.net I sure would like to hear the Scarlet > Fire, from 10/19/80, next week! Thanks for the grate memories.

R I P: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, William Schroeder, and Sandra Lee Scheuer were killed, from live M-1 gunfire, by the Ohio National Guard during a Kent State University protest against expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. I was a senior in high school 30 miles away in Pepper Pike. These were very turbulent times, widespread across our nation. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126423778&ps=cprs Grateful Dead played a free concert in memory of these fallen students in Cambridge, MA the next day, 5/5/70.

people have this idyllic view of the '60s, all peaceful and tuneful and lovey-dovey, and, um, no. Not that way. There was a lot of dark along with the light. Often in the same place.

I assume "C C" is talking about Haight St kids post 1989. We can't put everyone in the same bucket. Old Haight St. "Rainbow Family," are always coming back to school the new crews- and there's always at least one or two who will pick up the proper protocol, and pass it on. There's almost always one group of "Real" ..."Haight Streetians" with all the right info. and love somewhere between Masonic and the park. We move between Santa Cruz and home (The Haight) but we can be found most everyday. So, not EVERY SINGLE group of hangouts are squatting in disguise. Were still here. Just be careful who you trust. As I was schooled back in 81 by Bill the Cat, "Shea, not EVERYONE in tyedye is *Trustworthy-Kind-Rainbow-Family!" live & learn.Hugs to you.... Miracles Eternal, Shea ~When I had no wings to fly..... July 11th 1992 A range of eight 'ties', designed by Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead went on sale in the US. President Bill Clinton bought a set. The collection grossed millions in the US by the end of the year. From www.thisdayinmusic.com "I gave up drugs when the doctor told me I had 6 months to live" Keith Richards

I thought they were quite nice, and they served as sort of a subversive statement for wage slaves compelled to wear ties. I suppose they still do, but I kinda scratch my head at their transformation to that big a line also.

Were the original Jerry ties actually designed by Jerry? Or did he just attach his name to it? If he did it, how many different designs were his as opposed to, say, variations on a theme? Wage slaves? Really? In America? Say it ain't so! If I were president Jerry ties would be de rigeur in my administration. On topic, 40 years ago today the Grateful Dead played an epic 14 song acoustic first set at the Fillmore East that included Cocaine Blues.

though I'm prepared to be corrected by those with better knowledge, that the designs are from Jer's art, of which there is lots, but I don't know the details.

What a mass of hippie humanity on this wild and crazy day in 1973 near Elmira, NY. A few of us from Cleveland drove up in my '70 VW bus to see the Dead, the Band & the Allman Brothers. Our ten dollar tickets were useless as the fences were down by the time we got into the venue. We laid out a blanket left of the stage about 80 yards away and enjoyed the show until a fast moving storm chilled us all off. After the Allman's performance, several members of the Band and Dead returned to the stage and jammed on into the night. Never did figure out what was in that bottle of Almaden wine!?! that were being sold in the late 80's and early 90's had a tag attached with a picture of whatever artwork of Jerry's that was used, so i believe marye is correct, they were designed around his artwork.

I looked up at the television above the bar,and there was Jerry smilin' down with a black frame around his face and today's date 1995....I miss you Jerry, but I have survived and I will get by....Thanks for the music and the good times shared and yet to come....

3 terrific shows occurred on this date: I'm fortunate to have been at 2 of them. 9/3/72 was a 3 set show on a beautiful sunny day in Boulder, with an afternoon rainstorm to cool us off. This was my first show that really put me on the bus. We all appreciated the gifts from the Rainbow family.13 years later I attended the Starlight show in KC when Cryptical opened up the 2nd set. Listen to the Oade recording and enjoy this great show again. On XM Sirius right now, 9/3/77 is playing. Dick's Pick 15 offers a soundboard recording....

Woke up this morning @ 5:55 am when my 15 year old golden retriever, Honey, started to bark.I let her out, noticing she's movin' much too slow.... I shuffled out behind her to get the paper. I hurried my pace back to the house, cuz it was 45 degrees (Fahrenheit). Flipped on GD History to see what David L was playing, being just after 6:00 am. El Paso > Brown-eyed > Greatest Story and then Loose Lucy! 1973, not 1972! Next song was Beat it on Down the Line with a bunch of lead-in bass thumps from Phil. 37 years ago I made the drive from Oxford to Indy with a VW van full of twirling girls: indeed, this was a fun show. I think some guy climbed up on stage to visit w Donna.(?) Thanks, David, for providing the great sounding board. Looking forward to the replay at 6 pm!! P.S. I just noticed an MOTB audience recording on archive.org from 10/27/73 that might be good.

Enough is enough. This is not the topic for partisan rants, especially partisan rants not of your own composition. Try the current events topic where at least people know what they're in for. Post and commentary thereon removed. Reposting articles from other sources isn't allowed here either, so post a short excerpt and a link to the source next time. Thanks.

David LeMieux is featuring 5/17/78 today on XM's "Today in Grateful Dead" segment. I woner if he's playing the recording Charlie Miller equalized? . Check out Lazy Lighntnin! This show date recording is part of the Mixed Bag GD Vine: is it still circulating? To David's credit as archivist, he did pull out a 2nd set recording of 5/16/78 yesterday. This show is NOT listed in Cosmicbadger's voluminous Vindex. In addition, the LMA only has an audience.
