My first show and a hottie it was
I was 13 and my big sister and her boyfriend took me to the show where we were like 1/3 of the way back, central, on the dirt field, in a sea of heads. My first concert of any kind. Off in the distance I could make out thousands of folks, many with no clothes as it was like 98 degrees. An athletic naked guy walked right past us over our blanket. Everybody was just chill and it was great. Just in front of us, there were 3 guys passing a joint and I grinned as one of them parodied the recently released Cheech n Chong album when he said "You want me to wring it out for you.." I had played American Beauty, Workingmans Dead and Aoxomoxoa many times on my sister's turntable and I was a big fan of St. Stephen (which I recall saying "they didn't play St Stephen" as we drove home). So all of the songs that weren't on those albums were new to me and it was great to hear live versions and of course, how different they were from the recordings. Sister took me the following year to the Springfield Civic Center and that show, while good, was not the magic of that outdoor heat crowd chill rainbow magic that was Dillon Stadium.
