Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music exclusively from the second half of the Grateful Dead's performing history.
Our first selection this week is on the excellent summer tour in 1981, with a stop in Oklahoma City on 7/5/81. From the start of the first set, we have Shakedown Street, Promised Land, Candyman, Cassidy, Brown-Eyed Women.
Next up from 8/4/89 at Cal Expo is the start of the second set featuring a very unique sequence of music, Truckin'>Wang Dang Doodle>Crazy Fingers>Cumberland Blues>Eyes Of The World. Truckin' to open a second set was very rare, as was a second set Cumberland, and Wang Dang Doodle was always a nice addition to the set. A cool thing about Wang Dang Doodle is that it could find itself anywhere in the show, usually in the first set's blues slot, but also sometimes in the second set, usually after Drums coming out of Miracle or Truckin', this being a rare pre-Drums version.
And speaking of unique second set sequences, this is one of the most unique, from 8/18/91 at Shoreline: Deal>Samson and Delilah>Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo, Feel Like A Stranger. Aside from Samson, that's a big batch of first set Dead. There were a few way-out there sequences in 1991, including this one and the Pine Knob show in June with the Throwing Stones second set opener.
Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes direct from the vault. As always, we encourage you to write to us at the email address below with questions or comments.
