    Many thanks to Marye
The Grateful Dead experience was a phenomenon that so many of us were fortunate to experience. Visiting California a couple weeks ago (by train)for the GD Conference was strong medicine and an affirmation of a music that helped to make this a better world and to bring joy and healing for so many. Soon enough we old timers will be gone but I believe the legacy of the Grateful Dead's music will continue to inspire. I'm reminded of when I was a kid and our Grandparents would reminisce of times past. One time over 40 years ago I was playing the first solo album of Papa John Creach and it got to the song St. Louis Blues. My parents were amazed and pleased. The movie Sunshine Daydream is a time piece of an era for which many of us feel a great deal of warmth. I think people in the future will look upon the 20th century with amazement and wonder and for the most part not in a positive light. And someday not very far off the last Dead Head (Dead Freak) who saw the band as a seven year old or 13 year old in 1995 will be interviewed in his or hers advanced age as to what that experience was like. Much like the last World War 1 veteran or Civil War veteran the last Dead Head will be revered and respected, but of course in a different sense. My hats off to the archivists Nicholas Meriwether and Adrian Marin for their work and to Marye for providing this forum to exchange knowledge and stories. Long live the music of the Grateful Dead.

I decided to get with the times and order Sunshine Daydream on blu-ray, I do not have a blu-ray player so I have a dilemma. I have been looking for a blu-ray player for some time that has HDCD so I can listen to the Dead stuff I have the way it is meant to be heard and it looks as if Oppo is THE one. I am curious if anyone out there has any sugestions on this esp. concerning suggestions on other brands that aren't quite so pricey - I don't need 3-D, streaming all those other bells and whistles just a blu-ray player that plays HDCD's. Thank You

After 14 years of grainy near unwatchable VHS footage of this amazing show FINALLY a restored DVD release. This captures a watershed moment of total FREEDOM when the Dead scene was really coming together culturally, spiritually, musically. Yes $50 is a chunk of change but I was despairing that this would ever see the light of day, now at last it's here in a package that affords it the respect and esteem it deserves.

for the updated DVD and the cd set and I'm really looking forward to it, but that beach towel at 42 smackers? I would at least need a guarantee that I could roll it up and smoke it.

Does not include:• Bonus documentary “Grateful Days” featuring brand new interviews with Mountain Girl, Sam Cutler, Wavy Gravy, Ken Babbs, and more • 40-page book featuring original essays by Nicholas G. Meriwether, Ken Babbs, Sam Field, Johnny Dwork, and David Lemieux • Original tie-dye slipcase by Courtenay Pollock • Illustrations by Grammy-winning artist and designer Steve Vance Is that content worth an extra $21? Open question. I think we should be thankful we have the workingman's choice. Thanks Rhino.

Correct me if i'm wrong, Oregon dead was white. Eagle & skeleton tee was brown? And hippie dancer was blue? Just noticed they have these back in stock with all size runs? Only front image would like to see the graphic on the back of the first 2. Don't think hippie dancer has a graphic in the back. Anybody know about these & do they ship when ordered? or does it ship September 17 ?

With a great fondness I think back to that day. August 1st was a real up. I danced in the last row of the movie theater in Albuquerque just like I danced in front of the stage in Veneta 41 years ago on this date. I was 18 again for a couple hours. High kudos to Dead.net for reprinting t-shirts. Now who else remembers the "Reddy Kilowatt " t-shirt Babbs was wearing that day. I think I saw one at a "Garage Sale" at Keseys. 41 days, 41 nights, 41 years to wear the ball and stripes. Why I remember little Sadie that summer of 72 in Oregon.

The gloves worn in the "Look Inside the Box" video above are obviously intended to protect the media, but still, it creeped me out just a bit when I first saw it- especially in contrast to the casual attire and nudity on display at the event commemorated by the special edition. Kinda had a forensic vibe, know what I mean?

In answer to the question asking whether the extra $21 for the 40 page book, bonus documentary and tie dyed slip case is worth it...absolutely! I would feel somewhat short changed if I had the basic version of this set knowing that the deluxe version exists, but would still appreciate that it is released either way. I've seen 12 page tour books go for $30 bucks alone a pop. It's interesting that with the inclusion of Sunshine Daydream, that '72 has become by and far the most represented year for official releases at 35 different titles. In fact, 1972 is more represented than everything released from 1979 through 1989 combined at a total of 31 titles. It's also more represented than 1964 - 1969, which is 23 titles, or 1990 - 1995 at 16 titles.

Actually, if I were to count the original E72 release, the Complete box set, the individual show releases, E72 Vol 2, Rockin' The Rhein, Steppin' Out, Hundred Year Hall, the Dark Star Record Store day single and the Bickershaw Festival '72 various artists compilation, that would make 32 individual releases just from this particular tour. This raises the number from 35 to 37 overall releases from 1972. If it helps, I didn't include the Complete box music only edition... ;) *(note - this is by no means a complaint. I for one would like to see every single show in the vault released, regardless of the quality, year, era and completeness of the recordings and even multiple sources from the same show if they sound different from each other)

I usually agree with Spacebrother's calls for a more evenly balanced release of different CD's of concert's from era's other than just the 70's, even though my personal favorite shows tend to come from pre-hiatus 70's, but I don't think it's appropriate to view this release through that lens. This show is all about the Sunshine Daydream Video, and while the Dead's Discography is biased towards the 70's the Videography is if anything biased towards the later eras. Not counting the couple odds and ends that were released exclusively on VHS or Laser Disc long ago there have been (to my knowledge): 2 Releases from the 1960's (The Dead's spot on Playboy After Dark in Anthem to Beauty-1969, and a couple songs from Woodstock on the Blu-Ray Exclusive 40th Anniversary release-1969) 6 Releases from the 70's (three songs on A night at the Family Dog-1970, Festival Express-1970, Sunshine Daydream-1972, The Grateful Dead Movie-1974, Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978, and The Closing of Winterland-1978) 7 Releases from the 80's (Dead Ahead-1980, So Far-1985, View From the Vault IV-1987, Ticket to New Years-1987, Truckin' Up to Buffalo-1989, Crimson White & Indigo-1989, and Downhill From Here-1989) 3 Releases from the 90's (View From the Vault-1990, View From the Vault III-1990, and View From the Vault II-1991) And the bonus disc for the All The Years Combine box set featuring songs from the late 80's and early 90's. Vince has substantially more representation than Pigpen and TC and not that much less than Keith, while the Brent Era is actually the most plentiful.

I am of the belief that the reason a lot of 80's is not released (until 89) is the quality of the recordings for the most part. If they had Betty board analogue type 80's tapes most people could deal with the somewhat subpar playing at times (mostly from 83 to 86). The 90's also have a lot weak playing & weak digital recordings. Couple that with the processed midi guitar sounds (& lack of regular straight guitar tube amp generated distortion) that make it hard to release. Though the the Bass playing is exceptionally good in any era, it never sounds as warm as it does in all the Betty board 70's releases. I attended many late 80's thru 90's shows & Phil's bass had a tremendous live presence that just did not translate well to the cassette or later DAT recordings. The only exception being the multitrack 1980 Dead Set era & 1989-90 without a net era recordings.....Lastly I was pleasantly surprised by the Dave's volume 7. Great energy throughout & quality sound.

I'm a single father who gets no child support, and just had to shell out for braces. So after much personal anguish, I had to settle for the workingman's version. Nashville and Memphis are the closest record stores, and are both 110 miles away. Working 10 hours and driving on Tuesday is not an option, so I went through Amazon. Free shipping option means it will probably be Friday or Saturday before I receive it. It comes with AutoRip, so I can listen to it in my Cloud Player as soon as the mp3 version is released. I'm getting this one mainly for the DVD, so I can live without all the extras in the deluxe. That's what I keep telling myself anyway.

Through them. I usually order my GD products from them, but lately I am beginning to look at other avenues for getting GD merchandise. A few years ago they would thrown in a bonus disc with practically every release or include a t-shirt. I remember getting a t-shirt with Dicks picks 25 that had all the picks listed on the back plus a steal your face logo on left chest. With dicks pick 25 so far written around the stealie. & a great closing of winterland T with the ice blue rose, same as album cover art. Both made by Gildan activeware. definitely not a expenseive brand. Hopefully we get a few bones tossed our way or at least free shipping. The state I live in has sales tax, so I get hit with a double whammy. Shipping and tax. Rhino execs who call the shots, I am not asking for much, but help out the ones that help you, at least every now and then.

If you ordered this show from Dead.net in any capacity it seems there is being a bone thrown to others. As I just read about the amazon mp3 download included with purchase plus free shipping in previous post. & now grateful dead Facebook page has posted if you buy vinyl or cd combo at local record store, the 22 inch tie die poster will be given as a free add-on. Funny, somebody even asked on Facebook how they can get the poster since they don't live near a record store. The page administrator responded in nearly record time, stating you can order it from dead.net in limited quantity, i believe only 500. But when numerous others asked only moments later if would be included in preorders from dead.net, to no surprise there was no response. Sad thing is most of the independent record store owners will get an overflow of posters and probably just end up putting these on sale at websites such as eBay. I am also really confused why I could not cancel my order? This was weeks ago and now I have heard about these other perks. I will definitely enjoy this release, but I do not enjoy the tactics of Rhino.

Anyone else get the dreaded back ordered order status? Funny, I ordered the day the release was made, paid extra for shipping, and now have to wait while others can just go to the local store and pick it up. Wish I knew this was not soley a limited release on 08/01 when I ordered. Would have thought they would have planned this out to make sure they had enough stock prior to taking orders on day one. Would appreciate if others could tell me if they are having the same issue. I ordered the blu-ray version.

Though Amazon and other retail purchases are getting an MP3 and/or a poster thrown their way, aren't they also getting a neutered version of the release? I.e. they aren't getting the documentary, the book, or the "Courtenay Pollock Tie-dye Slipcase" and they aren't getting an "Individually Numbered/Limited Edition." That's what it says at the top of the page here, anyway. So although anyone who feels they need it ALL (not mocking anyone -- that description may include me...) will have to get two copies and then flog one off on eBay or make a gift of it to someone (after keeping the poster? some gift-giver!) -- you're still getting a bunch of exclusive bonus stuff ordering from dead.net so I don't see cause for much ire.

I usually get back ordered status before Dave's picks ships and I own the subscription. It should come within a couple days. That seems normal to me when dealing with Rhino. Although seeing this status is confusing because the term back ordered is usually not good when you add the extra shipping an expect to receive priority. For Dave's 7, I had to call because many had posted they received shipping notice, a night or 2 before release. Never got notice, until it had arrived after calling a day after release & product came 3 days later. Similar to this release as well. I preordered and have not received shipping notice. So I would definitely call & get customer service to verify they are "processing" your order. They told me last time they were waiting for the warehouse to get the product even though it was released that day and this event had been staged for months. As for the limited edition I am all for getting the perks of that, and don't mind paying extra $$, but I would some more transparency from Dead.net. i will seek other avenues to get releases because it seems there is some other perks from buying from other sources. Something I also heard recently was eye opening. There is talk of the song, Going down the road feeling bad from May 77' box show 5-13 being the same version as the Winterland 77 box show 6-8 version? Would like clarification on this from dead.net or anybody who owns both sets or has listened closely to know if this is true? If this is the same recording from both boxes and used to insert in May 77', I think a statement should have been made when May 77' was being released. Is this speculation or true?

rrot, I think the issue here is that Dead.net/Rhino are making you pay handsomely for the extras in the exclusive version. Amazon has the 3CD/DVD version for about $30, $20 less than the exclusive version here. That coupled with free shipping, guaranteed for release date, caused me to cancel my preorder and go with Amazon. I for one did not value the exclusives at the price difference and am thankful to TPTB that I had the choice. Getting the free "Auto Rip" was a nice bonus (I've already loaded up the album to my iPod), as are the free posters available to those purchasing at an independent store. The point is it would have been nice if a stream, poster or some other swag was made available to the fine folks ordering through Dead.net. I get that frustration.

It is indeed an oddity. This came up a few weeks ago in the May 1977 Box Set forum, and in the Internet Archive forum. As you will see in this interesting discussion over at the Internet Archive, the consensus seems to be that the use of the June GDTRFB to patch the May 77 Box was a good idea, BUT, not telling anyone they were doing it was, ummm, not such a good idea... http://archive.org/post/938099/same-version-different-dates-wtf-is-goin… But hey, right now I'm just waiting on the postman - come on Veneta! ...is amazing for 1972, and I don't own high end stereo equipment. Mr. Phil Lesh is on fire for this show! I've heard a less than stellar copy twice before, but nothing that sounds like this. On first pass, I Know You Rider and Dark Star really shine for me. Can't wait for the weekend, when I can listen straight through the discs and watch the DVD.

This is a real treat. 1353 arrived and oddly I jumped immediately to "sing me back home". The fading light, the tall Oregon ever greens, the chilled out Donna, the Jerry going for as much soul as he could, the harmonies, the quiet crowd---good stuff all of it. I'll go out and say it, 1972 was a really good year. They weren't too cool for school just yet but they knew they were hot shit that's for sure.
