The college road trip home
The college road trip home finale. Go Hawks!!
The best closing 5 or 6 songs of a first set I saw.
This show was wild because it was the last show of the summer tour and most of the eastcoasters didn't make the trip. Pretty far to drive in the opposite direction for one show. I would say that there were only hundreds of deadheads and that the majority of the people were cornfed Iowans. People were walking around saying, "I didn't realize these people were still around", talking about the sweaty little tye dyed hippies of course. I am sure that this show had the fewest tour puppies in relation to local concert goers of any show I ever attended. My hair was still short and I still took baths every day at this time. LOL, 83' was a different story. One other note other than that amazing first set was that I remember when they played truckin' and got to the part where they build up the jam to a big boom, all of them were literally off the ground. Even Jerry only had maybe a toe down, 'cause he of couse never jumped completely off the ground. ;) The Eyes and the Sugar Mags were very hot and this was the second double encore in two shows. Take me back.

Intermission
After three pieces of paper with a pharoh printed on it, I was strolling the floor during intermission, just walking around looking for friends. I was joining in with folk playing hacky-sack, dancing and general trippiness. There were a lot of the wind-up birds fluttering in the air, I was walking across the floor, enjoying the crowd, when I heard the flutter and then "Pow", one of them there mechanical birds landed upon my noggin. At that moment nearly everyone in the stadium who knew me called my name. It was pretty cool, and extremely trippy. I didn't know where to wave, just threw my arms up and melded into the continually dancing crowd.
The music never stopped,
Steve

The chairs were folding
The chairs were folding chairs, by the end of the night, I would estimate that there were few left standing. Picked up a head hicking to N.J, ,took him as far as Chicago--he sent me a few tapes in appreciation.
tunnel vision
after the two Alpine shows and a day of rest The Iowa city show was intense. I remeber trying to get up to the right speaker during space, however some tunnel vision kept getting smaller as I got closer. Finally I fellback in to a hall way and listened sprawled out on table top.
Also remeber Bobby saying that Iowa city needed a bigger place, It was one of my earlier shows and have a bootleg produced in france from the show
Our sedan
arrived early the evening before the show and the fieldhouse was open and students were in there setting up. Our whole carload got up on the stage and did our best Estimated Imitations. A-ha! I'm in no hurry, u-mo!
After was the decision to go East or to go to Oregon.
hitched back East after this
hitched back East after this sweet show check out the best china/rider in 82. i got a ride to nj. Princeton. with a dude who lived there. we got a ride from a guy who was a ski instructor from colorado. HE had a vw bus all his stuff and the Biggest dog i ever saw. scary ride through ohio FOG city. my turn at the wheel with this giant dog in the passenger seat. this guy mumbles from the back "just jump on the back of that 18 wheeler and dont lose his taillights" i learned all about draft that nite. Thanks guys
1st show
Got recommended to see the Dead by a guy that worked for my Dad but kind of blew it off for a few years. Got the chance to see them by working the show. I was 1 of the guys in the orange SCOPE shirts. What a great show to see with mainly the locals like me and the few heads there. Didn't know what the big deal was but went about my business until I looked at my drink during FOTD and saw the little piece of paper in it. The creeping weirdness was magnifed by the little PA adventure. I was starting to understand what the guy was trying to tell me all those times. Freakin on all of the colors and the people! The time passed and the 2nd set came when the drums/space hit i thought the old Fieldhouse was coming down. I was enjoying myself way too much to let work get in the way. This helps explain why so many folding chairs on the floor. I was helpless. The Stella Blue just blew me away and the 2nd encore Johnny B. Goode with the lights on. Unbelievable. Saw many great shows but that still stands on it's own. Got on the bus and still enjoyin the ride.
Knock Three Times!
In addition to the "Beer Barrel" jam, Bob sang "Knock Three Times" by Tony Orlando and Dawn! Amazing.
Remember the folding chairs. Went to several shows in this place, Jackson Brown, Emmy Lou, Jimmy Buffet. This was the last show I saw there before moving to TX.
One of the best Dead shows I saw
Great show! Bought tickets right before show time and walked basically up to the fourth or fifth row no problem. We drove up from Athens, GA to go to the two Alpine shows (shows number three and four for me) and were not planning on going to Iowa City until right after the second Alpine show. Alpine was so good we had to go! Lots of the East Coast tour heads blew off Iowa to head back home, big mistake. This show had an amazing set list and was very well played and mixed. I remember one guy next to us on the floor who kept yelling "play Passenger, come on Phil play Passenger."
My buddy got thrown in jail after the show for having an open beer in the parking lot of the Quick Trip. I slept in my Honda Civic in some apartment complex parking lot. I heard "American Beauty" playing out of one of the apartments so I guess they'd gone to the show. In the morning the judge let my friend write a check ($50 I think) to cover the fine and told us to leave Iowa, which we did.
