Heading into October, we have some terrific Grateful Dead music to cover this week, including a good selection from the brilliant September-October, 1976 tour.
Our first track this week is from Springfield, MA, on 10/2/72, and features a slightly different main jam for the era, which is to say no Dark Star or Other One. Instead, the band embark on a purposeful, efficient jam of Truckin’>Jam>Morning Dew, with lots of exploration throughout. This is the final night of one of the greatest tours of the band’s first 10 years, a run that would pick back up a couple of weeks later in St. Louis (with a quick stop at Winterland on 10/9/72). Many consider this to be one the best tours in the band’s history, and with three Dick’s Picks from the tour already released (DP 11, DP 23 and DP 36), there is a good case to be made for that claim.
Next we’ll step into 1976, during the band’s second major tour after their return to the stage in June. From 10/1/76 in Indianapolis, we have the second set jam, a typically unique 1976 sequence featuring Dancing In The Street>Drums>The Wheel>Ship Of Fools>Dancing In The Street>Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad>One More Saturday Night. 1976 was filled was crazy and inspired second set sequences like this. From the next night in Cincinnati, we have the first set closing combination of Let It Grow>Might As Well; 1976 was a banner year for Let It Grow, and this one is no exception to that year’s hot versions. Also from 10/2/76 in Cincinnati is the second set jam featuring Dancing In The Street>Drums>The Other One>Stella Blue>The Other One>Sugar Magnolia (we hope you don’t mind two Dancing In The Streets this week). The head and the tail of this jam are missing from the master reels, but the 40+ minutes in between are certainly worth hearing. Finally from 1976, we have three selections from the tour-closing show in Detroit. From early in the first set we have the combination of Sugaree-Minglewood Blues and from later in the first set we have one of the best Scarlet Begonias in a year in which they played plenty of great renditions, and the set-closing The Music Never Stopped, with a gorgeous outro jam.
Be sure to check in next week when we’ll have some great music from 1984, 1989, plus some other excellent material. As always, we encourage you to email with questions or comments. It’s always great to hear from you.

this communication on here thing. Thanx.**********************************

Be kindly to your horse because it bears you.
The dead entered into a business decision that brought Rhino in to have them manage the legacy and asset the was the vault. This is an expensive asset to manage. This was thier decision of what to do with thier property.
This is a fact, not a value judgement.
We've all spent lots of money, time and energy in the past to support the band. It was all well spent.
In addition we used to spend lot's of hours to find and trade tapes. I don't miss the old days.
This is a lot better. Every Monday we get surprises to listen to and additional sanctioned forums to find people who might have the music we are looking for.
I'll be sad when it finally goes away due to selfish self centered people who don't understand that what is free to take is not free to give.

your "2 kinds of people" comment. Very wise and very true!
wow this communicating is fun!

Sure whish I could listen.
But for some reason, I cannot connect to the streaming service from either of my computers.
And, questions to Rhino are ignored.
Sigh.
Long live bTree.
Long live bTree
Amen to that brother.
Like I said a few weeks ago, I don't even bother with the streaming files anymore. I just read David's reviews to help me decide which show to pull out and listen to next.
Peace,
Richard
Hmmmmmmmmm
I'd still much rather enjoy more new releases than the tapers section here. Archive.org has virtually all the same streamable stuff (with a handful of exceptions) plus we can pick and choose what and when to listen.
More new releases=more fan interest=more money for Rhino and the band members=better vibes all around for everybody.
I have a lot of faith in Dave L that he can pick 'em as well as Dick did but feel he is being held back while the Deads vault is being held hostage by a certain mass media corporation.
take what you need and leave the rest

richard i too was upset about the change in format (no pun intended) and looked forward to downloading a new bunch of gems (i still listen to while driving to/from work and have narrowed the weeks of primo to a smaller selection). now with the change..i've found that most places where i have access to a computor does not permit to access the stream. the other computer is a hassel w/ my family to listen (and the speakers are not the quality that i'd prefer), so......i see what has been chosen (the dead base can be over-whelming) and make contact w/ my own vault ( a friend that has a room in his house for JUST tapes) and seelct the few for that week. i've been able to add these gems to my radio show (which broadcasts the 60's/70's with a splash of the 50's and todays sounds)., i apprecite the dave's for thier intense research and quality of pick's but as others have been saden(ed) by the limitation(s) but have learned to roll with the tide. i read/hear these combative insults and rage filled postings and fear for our future\ but that's what makes this journey that much more interesting...bear in mind folk...if you have to take it personally refuse to take it seriously..and if you have to take it seriously refuse to take it personally...breathe deep..hold in ...slowly exhale and agin deep breath..hold and.....
Its been a while
Just stopping by to see if any changes have happened in the past few week........Looks like the same. Still can't buy DL's, no new CD's listed..............streaming still don't work on my end. Looks like Rhino is doing a FINE job rakeing in the money, what fools.I check back in a month or so.
Peace good people.

sorry about the confusion w/ estimatedprofits. and i hope you found my original posting to be tongue-in-cheek as it was meant to be. i'm discovering that 'heads are a sensitive bunch, and i'm really not interested in pissing off anybody anymore.
and a big public thanks to butterbean who sent me the complete fillmore 69 set. some of the greatest music these ears have ever heard. (and i've only heard a portion of the set so far.)
ENJOYINGTHERIDE
hey ETR!!!!!!
glad they arrived!!! PLAY THEM LOUD!!!!!
Seems to me ...........
that the sprit is making a comeback of the community is making a slight comeback on the recording part of Dave's Weekly Taper's Section. I personlly have about 500 hours of music on tapes and CD's of various quality. Fine by me. I mean how much can I listen to in one day/24 hour period? Let's see average concert length during the span of the dead is about 2 1/2 hours. I sleep about 7 hours , so that leaves me 17 hours of the day to sway to the beat of the Grateful Dead. This is about 7 concerts a day , 49 per week. or about 2,518 concerts per year. Now I think we all end up in situations where we cant listen to the Dead. IE: Bathroom Breaks, Shopping, Work, etc etc. With all the places like the Archive, or GDradio ( great job with the radio show) , I think what Dave does for me, and what other's in various posts on this topic and others, gets me to go listen to old tapes, or go to the archive to heear what people really think is great stuff. I love what Dave adds to the community with his weekly article, thank you for the effort. Now if Izzie can stop being so darn Sarcastic, maybe things would be better.....
excuse my complete lack of
excuse my complete lack of meaning in the 1st sentence of my post, brain fart is the onl;y explanation I can come up with. LOL.

Whatever else anyone might say about dead.net I just logged into say I really love your icon in the firefox browser tab. It has that Jerry factor at the perfect pixel level. Likewise love the David statements concerning the state of the vault.First in Rock last on the net

minglewood
Man - I've never been a huge Minglewood fan but this one's cool as hell, it's got a really nice laid-back groove but still pretty hopped up. And Phil is just all over the thing - nice! The only thing that makes me sad is Bobby skips the "T for Detroit city" line.
Sequence from 10/1/76
This is a great example of the band pulling in different directions yet they all converge back together in unison. After the Wheel Bobby wants to go into Dancin' . As he's playing the dancing rhythm rift Jerry musically says "not now" and he goes into a Ship of Fools. Bobby get's his way after "Ship" and the segue continues. Great piece of music.
Next Week - October 8 - 15
You can't possibly go by next week without a serious dose of Augusta, ME 10/12/84. Of particular magic that night was the Feel Like a Stranger, Cold Rain & Snow and of course one of the best 80's performances of Morning Dew. If you can get those on for next week it is appreciated... Has it really been 13 years!!!!
Thanks Dave and when in the world are those folks at Rhino gonna ever pick up the slack and start pounding out the digital downloads... Until then... long live the vines.
peace
gdhead77
It is sort of sad how fast the years fly by.....first you find yourself a kid in Boston discovering the Dead in the mid 70's, then the 80's Dead explosion occurs, then the post-Brent years, where Welnick is more irritating than Donna on many nights (can you imagine some of those shows if it had been just Hornsby helping out without some of those Vince-effects) and then the years PJ (post-Jerry)......The Dead seemed to love playing up in Maine....I remember those shows up in Portland, Augusta and Oxford Plains in '88....all great. Mainiacs indeed....
ahhhhhhhh...
it's so nice to see how much positivity is once again being displayed in these posts. i'm truly enjoyingtheride again.
perhaps i've reached the 'acceptance' phase.0000
oh, by the way,
my son (17 months old today) typed those 4 zeroes at the end of my post. guess he's trying to get his 2 cents in.
did i mention before that he loves to dance when i put music on? even to ravi shankar! but the only band that he twirls to is the gd. must be a genetic thing. happened the first time he heard them.
seque
tj crowley
moberg...yes! that's it! the magic of communication at a different level...listenning to almost any gd tune one can hear the inter-play as they bounce ideas off each other and (dis)agree or not...one can see bobby shackin' his head as the boys miss his cue to switch and he comes around again next line to attempt to attract them to his choice of seque....it was kinda bobby's job to ground jer...listen to the great seque 'china/rider' from eurpoe '72 and Phil lays down this bounding bass line for the switch and the boys follow right into rider...that's the magic!!! check out the viola lee > cunberland of (SUNY) Stoney Brook
10- 31- 70 one minute it's pure energy w/ the intensity of viola and w/o noticing (real hard to hear to signal) your swaying to cumberland majik!!!
segues indeed
Yeah, I've always loved those super deft ones - particularly 69-74 - where you're listening to one tune and before you realize what happened or how you're listening to another. The first time I remember being blown away by it was the first Dead record I ever bought, Live/Dead. We all know the furious furious jam out of The Eleven and next thing you know Jer's guitar spirals out and latches onto Phil's bass and it's Lovelight. Wowee Zowee Holy Fuck.

Shit flinging
Couldn't there just be a "Shit Flinging" section, then those who want to do just that can have their own little den. Just an idea...
flung dong
tj crowley flinging dong at the dong lingers is like being prejudiced towards prejudiced people...OH !! enjoying the ride....1st congrats of the birthday and hold onto closely as the years 'go passing by' quickly..we can baby proof the house and near everything while w/ our children but at one point (age 8?) we can't protect them anymore..they need to scrape their knees and THAT hurts us (the parents)

I don't know the answer to your question, but you might post it over here, http://www.dead.net/forum/requests-dvds, as that's the area the Rhino folks check for requests and DVD-related queries. Thanks!
