Thanks to the mods for putting up this topic! Okay, now I have a question. I have a giant hole concerning goods shows from the 80s (only DPs, official releases, and a show from july 84). My knowledge of the Brent years is sorely lacking. Any 80's recommendations? As for an essential show or run of shows I'll throw out the "From Egypt with Love" run in Oct '78 at the Winterland. I think these are kind of underrated shows. I was completely unaware of them until they were mentioned in passing by crazyfingers on the old message boards (BTW thanks crazyfingers!). It's the last great run with Donna and Kieth. Everyone is really on. Great, great playing. Yo Soy Boricua!

Feb. 11 - 14 19702/13/70 gets all the press, but all three nights are epic to me. special guests...acoustic sets...and mindbending jams. the epitome of the good ol' grateful dead.

I'm with leadbelly on this. All five nights were awesome but my favorite out of the bunch is 10-21. The post drums sequence makes me shudder,cry,laugh and shout. Leaves me with a great big smile every time I listen.

what is now DP 6:10.14.83 - Set II is IT! 2.26.77 - Swing Aud; First Terrapin & Estimated; beyond the pale 5.77 - cannot go wrong in this month/year If you like slower, mellow Dead, check out 1976, the music is slow langid and flowing. That entire years reminds me of what the Lady with a Fan would look like. Shows from Europe 1972; Fillmore East 1971 Anything or Everything from the Summer of 85; 11.1-2.85 VA Dead, of course :-) Summer 89-Spring 1990; Band in peak form going new places; much material to recommend. and 1991 with Bruce is terribly underrated, mostly due to the death of Brent, I feel. I still think that the shock of Brent's death took a long time for the fans to come to terms with. Jerry had the music and Bruce to help him out. I felt lost for the longest time and it wasnt until several shows into 91 (3.31 to be exact), that I felt the fit. Sorry I cant be more specific, my memory HATES me now. Both nights at the Hampton Coliseum were great, but 10/9/89 stands proudly in the pantheon of all time best Dead shows (in my humble opinion). "Dark Star -> Drumz -> Death Don't", is earth shattering. The first "Attics" in over 17 years is magic! Certainly a must have tape.Rock on. -Hunter "The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean."

Hal R,Totally agree with the 69 fillmore west run in late feb early mar. I was lucky enough to get the box set with all the shows. Blew my mind. The Dead were insane psychedelic monsters at that time. I like the '80's suggestions from Hunter and JohnnyG. Awsome! I've been listening on the archive. my first dead show i found, Soilder Field, July 9th, 1995, the last show, something about it that gives me goosebumps when i listen to it!

Hey everyone, brand new to the wonderful world of the dead over here, so please bear with me I was wondering where to start, when it comes to live shows. I'm looking for early era recordings. Circa late 60s early 70s. What are some of the best shows for someone who never experienced them live? Thanks in advance. I would love to get a hold of some recordings where they just jammed at the tests, are those available? Apologies for the dumb questions in advance. I have over 200 blank CD-R and have no problem sending and paying for shipping and what not. My goal is to fill those with live DEAD. My fav. years are: 1970, 1972 , 02-14-70 set 2 is brilliant, almost all of europe 72 is really, really good, get the complete 05-26-72 Lyceum...it's simply too good. there are alot of brent years that are good shows, don't always go by the setlist, especially during 1985 - that isn't a good year for performances - jerry had some problems that year, of which finally came to light in his "coma" in 86 - for example, 06-22-93 is a very good performance, but the setlist is average - I really need my deadbase on hand beside me to type in some dates. The Hamburg 72 show is really good too, there is a aud source that floats around , it would be nice to have the master available , it sounds like the mics are placed from the balcony rail. If you ever find (I think it's jim wise's senn 421's) 04-01-91 that are 20' space on the balcony rail , you won't want the soundboard, as well as Silberman's 04-21-84 PCM master with Nuemann U-87's... I used to visit www.gdlive.com but sadly, they seem to have gone away. I'm not really into streaming, as I'd rather load a set into my mp3 player and go outside. A good place to start for 1977 is 5/8/77 Cornell University. You HAVE to hear this show. 5/8/77 is essential. There were other shows during that run (New Haven, Buffalo, Boston) that are just as essential. You can easily download these for free at Nugs.net. Just click on Free Stash, and click on Grateful Dead (there are many other shows there available for free as well). Go ahead, do this now. Hunter is right; DP 15 9/3/77 is great. Went to that site, as I'm a big fan of the Stanley Theater. 1st song I got was a horrible sounding Loser. What's up with that. Check out 3/06/81 very hot. As for my runs I like all the richfield colisium runs in the 90's. They were great fun.

Ah, yes... mp3's. Very easy to aquire, if you know how. Stream the audio. In WMP, I just right click on "File", "Save Media As..." and away you go. You'll have to do that for each tune. You may or may not have to rename each file. Probably very similar for Mac users.

WOW!!!! This was actually the second tape of the dead that I ever did myself. An old college radio station had an hour or so deadicated to the boys every Tues., I think. So I taped it complete with a flip and everything. It was one of my most cherished tapes I had, forever. For one, I taped it myself, which was cool cuz it gave me something to trade with and Two....Are you phucking kidding me with what Phil did here. The tug of war so to speak of Jerry and Phil going back and fourth as to were they going into the Other One and when.... and then Bobby pulling out the Bobby Mcgee......Truly primal Of note.... I have a really good recording of the second set from the Berkley Community Theatre from 8/21/72 which was right before the infamous Veneta show that is often overlooked, but which I think is comparable. ( Despite some horrible tape flips and edits) The quality is board and if anyone is intrested, hit me. Overall a great month in deadistory. KOT...... Check out the Shelter from the Storm if ya'll feel the need for some healing.

I just heard the best LL Rain I've ever heard on the Sirius channel, but my player doesn't tell me the date unless it's a full show broadcast. Bob says something like "now for something really sad" when he opens it up, and Jerry plays slide guitar on the whole thing. Can anyone help me find which show this is from? Anything with Jerry playing slide peaks my interest . . .

On Dicks Picks 30 before a Jerry steeled Looks Like Rain, Bob says "time for a cryin' song folks". I believe it's from 3/28/72. It's a pretty good version too at least until Phil belts out "I'll still sing you love songs" in only a way Phil knows how! ;-)

HippieChuck-apparently i was mistaken,some did mention it.and i hate to say it,no one shoot me but alot of the dead shows with warren were really good!i cant compare him to jerry,2 different styles.warren really knows how music works!ive heard a couple and they sounded really clean.

I only have bits and pieces of these shows on a Parrot records release called "The Best Damn Music in the World" but Fillmore East 2/11/70 with Greg and Duane Allman and Peter Green St. Louis Fox Theatre 2/2/70 The Warehouse, New Orleans 2/1/70 with Fleetwood Mac "You know the one thing we need is a left handed monkey wrench....."

One of the first shows I really got into was 6/25/92 Chicago. First "School Girl" since '87 and a Drums>Space jam that gives me chills. Also, 10/31/91 Oakland. Great setlist with a Dark Star>Kesey Rap>Drums>Space>Dark Star during the second set. Though it is overly stated the May '77 run is amazing.
